Schmitz, and the words 'Magic Insider' should never be associated with one another.

That being said, this deal blowing up at the last second would likely result in the stroke-related deaths of several members of this board.

I would be jumping for joy if this deal blew up. Fist pumping and all!

WE DIDN'T WANT AN ALL STAR! WE DIDN'T WANT TO BE MEDIOCRE! WE WANT TO SUCK!

WE WANTED DRAFT PICKS
WE WANTED YOUNG TALENT
WE WANTED CAP SPACE FLEXIBILITY
WE WANTED SOME BAD CONTRACTS GONE
WE WANT TO SUCK
WE WANT A NEW CULTURE

Sorry for the Caps but For Crying out loud. People. It may not be the best deal, but we weren't in it to just be mediocre. We get Bynum back, we are mediocre. What other All Star was offered? Also two things:

* Cap Floor
* Howard requested Brooklyn and LA. That is it.

The deal isn't finalised yet, Alex Kennedy has stated there are more names attached and stated, the draft picks we got will allow us to wheel and deal and move up places on draft night, package it with players etc. Guys, we were never getting equal value for Dwight, but what we wanted was to rebuild the Franchise. You don't do that with players that didn't want to be here and to be mediocre.

Let the building of the Franchise begin, I can't wait.[/quote]

Thanks for the great post, and I agree 100% with you. I give the Magic a lot of credit, actually, for not caving in to the DeVos family's original preference about getting a high tier player back so we could be competitive (translation: mediocrity and 1st round playoff exits, but it puts butts in the Amway).

I applaud the vision and daring of going for a total rebuild and relaunch. Three to four years from now we'll all be pounding on the table for Henny to be GM of the year. In the interim, we develop a core group of supporting players (that's the reason we hired Vaughn), and then look to get a few blue-chippers via the draft and/or free agency to round out the team.

People espouse the OKC/Spurs methodology until we get down to it, and then complain that we're going exactly that way. No, it won't be easy the next few years. But we need to do our part. Be patient. Support our team.

Who do we really have on the payroll after that summer?

Afflalo: $7.75
BBD: $6.6
Harrington: $3.8 guaranteed

A few rookies at like $1-$2mil each?

That's like $40mil in capspace!

Real question is what potential big name free agents are around that summer?

Cap space means nothing for this team right now. What superstar is going to want to come into a rebuild situation?

Mcgrady, Grant Hill did. Almost Tim Duncan. That's still 2 years away. Some of our guys might turn into young stars....we might get a huge draft pick in the next couple years too, who knows.

And cap space DOES matter, because I think the cap floor will be 90-95% of the cap at that time, so we HAVE to spend the $$$. So who is available and who might fit DEFINITELY matters. Otherwise we will be forced to overpay people who aren't worth it...

For those saying that they'd wait to see the protection on those picks...

Ken Berger ‏@KBergCBS
The first-round pick going from the Sixers to Magic is lottery-protected for two years, top-11 protected in yr 3, top-8 protected in yr 4.

Ken Berger ‏@KBergCBS
If Magic don't get a first from Philly by 2016, they get two second-round picks, league source said.

Magic still working on details of deal, expect GM Rob Hennigan to be available later this afternoon. He's wearing a bullet-proof cardigan.

Based on what I've been told Houston pretty clearly had a better offer -- including a guaranteed lotto pick. Frustrating day for Rox.

Nah, we're good with our protected late 1st rounders and 2nd rounders.

My problem with this trade is this ... forget getting equal value ... who in this collection of players is a building block? Forget Lebron or Wade ... which of these guys is going to be your Chris Bosh? Or for that matter, which of these guys is going to be your Serge Ibaka or James Harden?

If you weren't going to get young studs back, then at least hold out for unprotected picks.

I just don't get it.

Magic basically traded Dwight for Harkless (15th pick in draft), Nikola Vucevic (16th pick in draft) and Aflalo (27th pick in draft) with a few future first rounders that will be in the 20's about 3-5 years from now. And, only Aflalo is a legit starter.

Hennigan is officially, a freaking idiot. What a dumbass! Magic would be better off keeping Dwight for the year and making a splash in 2013. Or at least, waiting for a better offer at the trade deadline.

Magic didn't even get One Single All-Star for the most dominate Center on the planet. A travesty in modern sports history.

The Magic are now the laughing stock of the entire NBA and no superstar and not many all-stars should ever consider joining this team.

Here is your future Magic fans, a lifetime of mediocrity. This is what you get when you panic and give in to Stern and Dwight Howard.

Thank you for being rational. You have to look at the big picture on this situation. We are not attempting top contend this year. We are trying to tank for a couple of years and acquire young assets (draft picks, rookie contracts) and reach cap flexibility. Getting Bynum or Iguodala or Gasol for example is counter productive to that cause. We dont want a Steve Francis era repeat.

As Josh Robbins mentioned this morning on 740, the Hou deal was not as good as was mentioned. It was either younger players or cap space, not both. If it was truly offered then Henny would have done it.

B&W, we were not trading for one of our own draft picks. Even with the Houston deal we would have had a top 10 pick of our own. The draft picks we got for Howard suck and portend a LONG rebuild.
Moe we dont even know the details of the Houston deal or if it even still existed. Would you please calm the hell down before i slit my wrists? We don't know anything. It makes ZERO sense that if the Houston deal was that good hennigan would pass it up for a chance at afflalo and harrington.

All I am saying B&W is that even if we got Lamb, Toronto's pick and some cap relief that would be better then this trade. Geez, even Lamb and the high Toronto pick. This deal really does not help the rebuilding process because the draft picks are awful. I really think DeVos went this route to give Howard what he wanted as maybe a PR move for other potential F/A's. If he did, I think that was stupid. Cash attracts free agents. Not just cash but that goes a long way to convincing them.

2014 Free Agency Class is sometimes referred to as the "best FA class ever":

But I'm not so sure how signing max fa's fits in with tanking, I think the cap room is moreso for paying our young guys down the road that we draft
