Optimistic about Metta World Peace

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Sat Aug 11, 2012 3:17 pm

call me crazy but im pretty excited and optimistic about the type of season Metta World Peace has the potential of having.

Last yr, MWP came into the season totally out of shape and was showing some rapid decline, even faster than his decline had been in prior seasons. Once he got in shape though and we found out that he had been working on a nerve issue on his back/legs that had been bothering him for yrs, we saw MWP start dunking it repeatedly, with a spring in his step we hadn't seen as a laker. he flourished in kobe's absence.

A few weeks ago MWP talked to the LATimes about it, and how great he feels right now:

http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakersnow ... 9117.story

“Last year I started to dunk the ball, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg,” World Peace said. “I wasn’t even peaking. That was only the tip. That was only a little taste of what I could do.”

So what are you envisioning now?

World Peace paused a few seconds before blurting out, “Wow,” World Peace said. “Just to be one of the best again.”

The best on defense?

“No,” World Peace answered. “The best in the league.”

Before the obvious rebuttal comes, World Peace brings up how he’s capable of replicating his 2003-04 season in Indiana, when he won defensive player of the year honors and averaged 18.3 points per game. He mentions how his current weight (255 pounds) marks a stark difference from when he entered training camp last season (270) because his back issue allows him to train extensively. Even though he practiced with Tuesday a handful of D-League and high school players, World Peace says the conditioning drills show he will be more effective next season.

“I’m getting to the basket any time I want,” World Peace said. “I couldn’t do that for years. I would miss layups. I missed so many layups. It was ridiculous. I’d be right under the basket and I can’t jump. Then I’d get blocked and miss a layup. Then I’m trying to pray for a foul. But later in the season, I was able to get it and dunk.”

Great to hear that physically he's feeling rejuvenated, something we got a glimpse of at the end of the yr before he went crazy and elbowed harden. The most promising thing though, he shot 39% from 3 in the playoffs. he def. had his legs back.

Then we got news that the Lakers are going to try to implement some of the princeton offense. Its no secret that MWP struggled in the triangle, and he really had no role in offense last yr where any real system never had a chance of being implemented. ron's lack of role was also mostly due to being out of shape most of the yr, unable to attack the basket. with the princeton offense however, combined with the spring in his step, he should be able to find a nice role. i expect it cause its something he did before, when he played an entire season under rick adelman's version of the princeton offense. during that season MWP shot a career high 40% from three. it was also the last time he made an all defensive team.

Taking all that into account, and then realizing that he'll be surrounded by kobe bryant, pau gasol, dwight howard, and the one and only STEVE NASH...i'm very optimistic he can have a 08/09 type season where he's knocking down 40% from 3 in the princeton offense while playing all-nba type of defense.

not quite as optimistic as you are, but if he can do ^that^, i think we win it all. he certainly turned it around, on both ends of the floor, at the back end of last season

If Ron can consistently play anywhere close to the way he was playing just before he elbowed Harden in the side of the head the Lakers are going to be very tough to beat next year. Add Dwight's defense in there for good measure and wow! Needless to say I'm very much looking forward to the start of the season.

he needs to lose some weight imo. he needs to get some workout lessons from kobe, get back to that 04 form or at least close to that.

ps. i remember an old interview from metta with him saying the reason he doesn't want to lose weight is because he still wants to fight ben wallace lol.

I've been optimistic since earlier this summer when word about him getting in great shape started to pop up. I think the league will be surprised with MWP this season.

Good, now every time a poster says something silly like "MWP needs to be traded/amnestied/cut" or "We need to fix our SF problemz!!" I can just point them to this thread instead of having to explain how important Metta is to our championship aspirations.

The guy makes the best scorers in the league work hard to get there points, that's really the most you can hope for. No one player is stopping a Lebron or a Durant while they are in their prime, it's just not possible bc they are too good offensively.

I just hope he didn't loose too much strength... He'll need that for LeBron and maybe Melo.

His brother posted a pic of him on twitter. He looks alot slimmer than usual. I wont say it will transfer into his 04 game but he looks like he's been working pretty hard. He looks about 240 or less in the pic.

Damn... I read it as 225... My bad. 15lbs could easily just have been fat.

Month of March
14.1 ppg, 47.3%fg, 33.3 three %, 78.1 fts, 2.9asts, 1.6 stls ~ 14 games

Vs Denver
15pts, 4stls, 2blks, 2asts, 5rebs! 36% from 3

Vs OKC
11pta, 2asts, 3 Rebs, 2stls, 40% threes and 37.8fg% (both better than Harden)

Artest started last year with a pinched nerve in hi back and got better after the break and getting treatment. He looks good now and has been said to be at the practice facility in El Segundo every morning since they got eliminated:

its also his off-season weight, so he could have been lower than that at the end of the yr and he just hasn't gone all the way back upt o 270, just 255.

but damn that pick that was just posted, artest looks IN SHAPE

He's gonna be a beast this season, if he can knock down 3s and guard the top SFs without hitting anyone i'll be very happy, he does look like he's in great shape in that pic, i hope he doesn't weigh to much less than 255lbs because strength is part of what makes him a great defender.

Yeah boy.....Metta is ready to go. I've been getting tid bit stories on him all summer, you can just sense he's ready to shut up a lot of critics. Been a supporter of his since he got here, even when countless posters of ours wanted to see him erased from the roster. Also I keep seeing these asinine post on how we don't have " anybody for Durant".....that bull and they know it.

Most fans of the elite teams ( no need to mention, the lurkers know who the hell they are ), are trying to act all truculent to mask their fear.

Only thing Russ and SD had on us last year was Bynum as opposed to Odom covering the pick and roll. Kobe and Ron got **** the second the screen came because you put Bynum in literally no mans land worse than you would do Shaq. Dwight will show and then sen they **** in third row or make them dribble back into Kobe and Ron defensively

I mean the amount of pulls up they hit because our C couldn't cover the space right after the pick and get back to the basket was ridiculous.
