Report: Rob Hennigan Was Not Highly Regarded By Spurs

Rob Hennigan spent four years with the Spurs, beginning as an intern and working his way up to become the team's director of basketball operations.

Hennigan left the Spurs to join Sam Presti in Oklahoma City, where he spent two seasons as the Thunder’s assistant general manager/player personnel.

"Hennigan didn’t have the same stature in San Antonio," writes Buck Harvey. "When he left to join Presti, the Spurs thought he probably needed to get out and try something else."

Presti's top assistant was Troy Weaver, who reportedly didn't interview as well with the Magic as Hennigan.

It makes sense. Competent GM's were afraid of the toxic situation DeVos has been creating in Orlando and wanted full autonomy to do what they wanted.

When the Magic would not grant those potential candidates that ability, they looked for a sucker with their same inept way of thinking / management style.

Enter: Rob Hennigan. A brown nosing intern who rode up the ranks by riding on the coattails of others, and whom never fully received the respect and endorsement of his bosses.

I know right. Show much shade is being thrown on this guys name due to this trade. In reality he could be a good smart GM but look at the other people in his front office. He isnt exactly paired up with Buss family or the Spurs ownership. This is Orlando folks. Give the guy a break. We will see what moves he makes in the future to accurately judge him.

The director of basketball operations is responsible for the daily assistance of the program (basketball team) for which they work. The description is vague in nature because of the various responsibilities that can and do fall under the director of basketball operations authority. Most listings for the job will include assisting in scheduling, equipment ordering, camp planning and programing, marketing and sponsor finding and community service.

Pop/Buford have always been in charge of the Spurs front office. Presti also had a significant role as assistant GM. Never even heard of Hennigan 'till he was named Magic's GM.

Hello, I'm a Laker fan and in my opinion you guys should give Hannigan a break. Obviously being how young he is it isn't fair the position that the Magic ownership put him in. I believe he did his best in finding the best deal for Dwight Howard in the best interest of the Orlando Magic organization. I would give him an -D for Jameer's contract, D for trading Anderson, and an -A for the Dwight Howard trade.

Huh? Buck Harvey is well regarded as far as Spurs news goes. If this was from Jeff McDonald(pretty bad for a beat writers) I'd believe you.

in san antonio's defense, hennigan was pushing to trade duncan for ben gordon, jason maxiell, a lotto protected first, and a top 40 protected second.

It doesn't matter any ways but it is clear as day that Hennigan didn't have total control over the transaction. I don't think he is stupid enough to willingly pass up Houston's offer. There was strong arming going on.

Agreed, he rose pretty damn quickly at a young age for his employer to think that he should be looking for a different line of work.

I have to agree with the general sentiment of the topic. I think Henningan agreed to a horrible trade, and we'll see if it pans out to worst of all-time or something like that. Still, if it's true the Spurs leaked this out to Buck Harvey, it's the text-book definition of disingenous. I don't care what anyone wants to tell me about how the inner workings of NBA front offices operate, NBA teams don't promote someone from intern to running basketball operations (and I guess all the menial tasks that come with that) PERIOD unless they really like the guy. 4 years? They clearly saw something special in the guy, and then the Magic ultimately take him as GM over someone who was higher up in the totem pole on the Spurs. Did I miss something? Clearly he's gotten to where he is today for a reason.

I'd hate to think I'm defending Hennigan after ripping him for the trade, but yea, I'm not buying what the Spurs are selling, assuming they're the ones selling it.
