jduane - the year you select for your player does not have to match the criteria for the category. so you could select hakeem for thief, then choose a year where he didnt average 2 steals.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - Fat's Pick
team fatlever selects MAGIC JOHNSON for the BROADCASTER category. i will be using the 1986-87 version of magic.
in 1986-87 he averaged 23.9ppg, 12.2apg, 6.3rpg and 1.7spg, shooting 52%fg and 84%ft playing in 80 games. magic won both the league MVP and finals MVP during that season.
drafting magic sets the tone for team fatlever. we will be running team designed to get out on the break and let magic do what he does best. pass.

thankfully i am not being judged on magic as a broadcaster. he was awful.

He could get so distracted while announcing a game and if I didn't know any better I would have thought that he was high, since his mood always was so over-joyous (that is a word, right?) and he kept giggling.
Simmons said it the best - for some reason he always sounded like he was eating a ham sandwich. I can't explain it, but somehow that statement actually makes sense.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - Fat's Pick
My pick was going to be either Magic or Bird, which ever one that Fats didn't pick.
So for the March Madness category I pick Larry Bird.
He's a great starting pick for any team as there isn't much he couldn't do.
He had a pretty consistent career until injuries caught him in the end, but I guess will take the 87-88 Bird.
29.9 pts, 9.3 rebs, 6.1 assists.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - kemba2hendo's Pick
had magic been picked at 2 i was prepared to take bird at 3. however, i was going to use 83-84 bird. nba mvp, finals mvp, 2nd team all-defense, 10+ rebounds. young bird that still had a good back, and was quick enough to defend small forwards and strong enough to bang with power forwards. only drawback to 83-84 bird was he didnt shoot many 3s back then (even though he was still best shooter in league). teams just didnt launch many 3s until later in the 80s. but hard to go wrong with any bird from 81 to 88.

I'll play devil's advocate and say that there's a difference between guarding Kelly Tripucka or Kiki Vandeweghe and Scottie Pippen or Glen Rice. He was very quick compared to the late 80's Bird who at times could barely move around, but his assignments also changed as times went by. Nevertheless he was a good defender even after his prime thanks to his ability to read the game.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - swedd's Pick
swedd asked me a good question, should someone who has only done work as a studio host/analyst qualify as a broadcaster? my initial reaction is no. broadcaster refers to someone who is calling the game either as play by play or color commentator. correct me if i am wrong.

I asked specifically regarding Shaq. Does he qualify as "broadcaster" if he's done the TNT stuff, or no? It doesn't matter either way, just curious

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - swedd's Pick
Picking 6th isn't so bad... when you get the most physically dominant player to ever lace 'em up.
In the 1999-2000 season, Shaquille O'Neal came into the season in the best shape of his career and posted one of the greatest individual seasons the game has seen.

29.7 points (on 57.4%)
13.6 rebounds
3.0 blocks
3.8 assists
30.6 PER
NBA Most Valuable Player
NBA Champion
Finals MVP
All-NBA First Team
All-Defensive Second Team
NBA All-Star
I'll slot him into broadcaster if allowed, Journeyman if not

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - swedd's Pick
swedd, to make the broadcasters easier to define, we should limit it to game broadcasting. or else anyone who has ever been interviewed on tv about a sport would qualify.
i'll put shaq in journyman for you.
