Emergency Point Guard

Post#1 » by SmashMouthRod » Tue Aug 14, 2012 5:35 pm

No Euro-ball 4 Josh Akognon. He will go 2 NBA camp via out-clause from Chinese team w/ whom he will sign this weekend. If cut? Back to CBA. Magic, Mavs, Spurs, Bucks & Pacers in mix w/ vet-camp invites.

I dont what veterans are available; But the Pacers are interested in this guy; I havent heard of him before now; He looks skilled enough for 3rd string. I personally would like someone like Earl Watson. Thoughts?

He's in the mix to get a camp invite. We are going to be bringing in around 4 guys just for camp. It allows you to actually run drills and full practices while keeping some of the vets healthy and fresh for the season.

Akognon may get a camp invite, but he won't make a roster.

He had a remarkable summer league for the Kings, no surprise that a number of teams are really after him. He would take on AJ Price's role in the team, but in my opinion he's somehow better than Price. Maybe he's more explosive. I'd love to see him with our team.

I do think we need like a vet-min 3rd-string point guard.

Because as much as I kind of like the idea of Lance Stephenson filling that role.... if Hill or Augustin gets injured, you're suddenly relying on Stephenson to be the PG for like, 20-25 mpg. Which would be a pretty scary jump.

So yeah we need one more minimum PG and our team for the year is pretty much complete.

Jonny Flynn or Sundiata Gaines would be decent options as emergency 3rd PG's. Whomever we sign would likely be inactive most nights.

I'd throw Mike James in there too, but there's heaps of options. We definitely need another point though.

I'd like to take a shot a Flynn. He had a nice first year in Minnesota (I think made the All-Rookie team) and for whatever reason fell out of sight starting in year two despite not playing horribly, On a low contract, he could be a very nice pickup.

The reason he fell off was because he had a labral tear and lost most of his explosiveness which at his size is obviously very crucial to his success. Its too bad because he was electric at Syracuse and showed flashes during his rookie year.

I would love to have Johnny Flynn as our 3rd string, but would he actually want to sit behind Augustin and Hill?

He might have interest in a 2 year deal (as Augustin is only on a 1 year deal). Plus, it appears that free agency has otherwise left him behind. I'm sure he'd rather be rehabbing/learning on an NBA roster and with NBA coaches rather than trying to float around the NBDL or Europe/China at this point.

Jonny Flynn is absolutely the guy to go for. Get him on a 2 year / 2.8 mil deal. He'd have no pressure in the first year, being the 3rd PG. If he plays well enough, it gives Pacers options regarding augustin in 2013.

What about Derek Fisher? I mean, he's a guy with loads of playoff and championship experience, and he'd be another good veteran leader to have on the team. Even if he only plays 10 mpg behind hill and augustin, the intangibles of having a guy like that would be great.

Mike Bibby?

Baron Davis?

are we rebuilding for years down the road or fine tuning our bench for a run against Miami and Boston? I think it is the later so I can see a Derek Fisher much more than a project like Flynn. besides the youngest man on the roster is likely to still be Stephenson so if you want to use the 3rd point guard spot for a development prospect, we've already got one.

I think we're fine in terms of team chemistry and leadership right now. This team has grown together pretty well. At this point, I think having Fisher inactive most nights would be more of a distraction than anything. He simply doesn't provide anything on court anymore, and there is NO growth opportunity or development opportunity with him.

Not only this, but I think he's made it apparent that he'd rather be with a big market team like LA, or OKC (As of Kevin Durant-era), or even Boston. I'd HIGHLY doubt he would even consider coming to Indy.

Jonny Flynn is definitely the guy. What if we lose Augustin after this year, since he only has a one year deal? Wouldn't Flynn be a decent backup PG?

That remains to be seen. Flynn, post-injury, is still struggling to show he belongs in the league. It would definitely be an end of the bench flyer to sign him.

Emergency point guard? Isn't that why we have Lance Stephenson here for?

Seeing how Lance did in high school and college, and seeing his swagger on the NBA courts, i think if he played in Chine, he would dominate over there too. Never heard of Josh Akognon, and he may be a solid story one day if he makes it, but he's as much of a project player as Lance is. Maybe even a bigger project player at this point.
