if the question is, would a team give up a 1st round draft pick to unload an expiring contract, yeah don't see the thinking behind it. The lux tax or losing a little money is onerous, but not that onerous. Then again, Robert Sarver exists.

I don't believe the Bulls are thinking along the lines of winning the Conference though. Or counting on Rose or any backcourt combinations. But they like draft picks.

Scratch what I said about dumping RIP, on two conditions:

1. If the Bulls don't give up a first rounder

2. They sign TMac.

If the Bulls don't pay the tax this year, they could literally save well over 10 mil on repeater charges down the line, plus save like 9 mil or so this year, plus not have to deal with RIPs 1 mil guarantee next year. Thus, the bottom line difference for this team between TMac and RIP this may ultimately be like 20 mil. I'd marginally prefer RIP at the same money, but at a 20 mil premium in a season where we're not likely to win a title? Plus TMac is a better creator than anyone but Rose on our whole team and could probably get the front line going with easy baskets compared to RIPs more low percentage shots? sign me the eff up. It'd be nice to have both RIP and TMa, but I wouldn't be surprised if neither TMac nor the Bulls wants to experiment with all of the inevitable TMac vs RIP PT issues like there were in Detroit, except here it would be much worse due to the presence of Deng, Rose, Butler, Belinelli, etc.

eff it - send 2 second rounders to Orlando with RIP for nothing, then sign TMac, extend Taj and Thibbs, and call it an offseason.

Rip Salary: $5m
Lux Tax: ~$4m
Rip Buyout: $1m
Rip Total $10m

Tmac Salary: ~$1m
No Lux tax
No Buyout next season
Tmac Total: $1m

If we get under the tax we also share in lux tax distributions, so thats more money. I could easily see the analysis where ownership would say it's worth giving up a pick to save $10+ million. Would prefer not to give up next year's first in a deal like this though (maybe Teague?). With Rose out, we don't have the top line talent to make up for injuries to any other key players. I'm hoping for the best, but there is a small chance that things could get ugly.

The Bulls do like to keep their picks so it does seem unlikely they are able to move Rip. I think they'd do 2 2nd's and Rip though to clear him. Not enough incentive for the Magic though.

Pax gave up picks just to dump John Salmons because of the 'chance' Salmons would exercise the option on the last year of his contract. He never did, which ended up costing us picks for nothing, but Pax didn't want to risk it.

Then he gave away another pick (Seraphin) to the Wizards to dump Hinrich's contract.

If we have to trade another 1st rounder (or more) to dump Hamilton, it would be like giving away multiple draft picks because of Hinrich, the first time to clear cap space in 2010 and the second time to avoid the luxury tax this year, which could have been accomplished by not signing Hinrich to $4M in the first place. It's almost like we traded a 1st round pick for the right to overpay Hinrich, if that's what it ends up costing us in order to lose Hamilton.

Bulls are never going to pay repeater tax. No need to worry about that.

If the Bulls have a master plan of using the Rip's TPE and Korver's TPE with some picks/little salary to get Harden next summer or trade deadline because OKC wants relief and not salary ...it's a decent plan.

If OKC resign Ibaka, do they go into LT? If so, there might be a small possibility that they do not want to resign Harden.

And what you described will not get you James Harden because you can't combine TPE.

OKC just turned down Harden for #2. There's a sign of how valuable Harden is to them.

Harden said he feels confident he'll reach an extension with the Thunder prior to the Olympics so I'm guessing it is only a matter of time before we hear he is off the market.

Ibaka on the other hand will be the guy they let go, not Harden. Drafting "steal" guys late in the draft like Perry Jones III are good ways to move forward with replacing Ibaka. However, I do expect that they will find a way to keep all 4 guys including Ibaka in the end.

All the Thunder really need to do is get rid of Kendrick Perkins. They added a bunch of "cheap" centers this offseason and I think they're hoping one of them pans out.

Absolutely nothing indicates any team wants Boozer at this point. We heard no rumors of Boozer being dealt this summer because the Bulls have already given up.

Ineluctability has found a new synonim, it's sham. After the kirk count, this should need another one.
On the other side i prefer to give this year pick, lottery protected, instead of taj or charlotte's. But the fact that Rip is going to get traded is almost a certianty.

Yeah, I expect 0.1% chance Harden is not extended to the max allowed by OKC. Durant is basically a top-2 player at this point (so that in itself means, PAY LUXURY and don't complain)... their 3 stars' camaraderie/chemistry is great.. It's a long-shot for Bulls to base any plans on Harden. This said, he will be on Chicago's "list."

If by list you mean "list of players we have no desire to acquire because the only realistic way involves trading Derrick Rose" then yes, James Harden is on that list.

Pretty regressive and funny. Give away a draft pick to get rid of Kurt, give away another pick to get him back, when he's even worse than he was when we dumped him.

I never said why would you wanna trade Rip. I was wondering why you were hoping that it'd cost a pick to do it. Rip+Cash at the deadline would basically amount to a team paying Rip about 2 million bucks spread out over 2 seasons. I would HOPE that he plays good enough to make it a flat deal-- Minnesota might be interested for example (depending on the amount of knees Brandon Roy still owns comes February).
