bobcats move out for DNC

“They’ve assured us we get our building back on the 26th (of September) just as they found it,” said Bobcats president Fred Whitfield. “That was our biggest concern.”

Technically, August and September are the off-season, but in reality this is the Bobcats’ ramp-up time, both on and off the court. Players assemble in Charlotte by Labor Day for weeks of daily pickup games preparing for training camp. The business side is in a final push to sell tickets before the team opens the regular season in November.

Whitfield and his staff started planning this move-out six months ago. The single biggest concern: Not disrupting the players’ preparation. The Bobcats have a new coach in Mike Dunlap and a slew of new players via the draft, free-agency and trades.

They’re hoping for significant improvement after last season’s 7-59 record, worst in NBA history.

“Especially with Mike Dunlap’s player-development agenda and our players getting into the mindset of coming in every day (of the off-season), we wanted to have a system in place where it would be very easy for them to go through their normal regimen,” Whitfield said.

So the Bobcats arranged to use Johnson & Wales’ gymnasium on the edge of uptown as their temporary training facility. The college will turn over the gym, two locker rooms, their training room and a player lounge to the Bobcats’ exclusive use from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., until fall classes begin the second week of September.

For the rest of September, the Bobcats will get Johnson & Wales’ gym two hours each morning. As a perk, J&W students will be invited to watch pickup games from the gym’s bleachers.

Unreal. If it's not a stupid horse show causing major interruptions, it's the Marxist invasion forcing our team into a rat hole to refine their game.

I sometimes think the Bobcats are the NBA's equivalent to the Cubs.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

I think its great for the city in general. I don't think it will be that big of a deal personally.

Don't you think the DNC had to ask first?

The DNC is going to be a pain in the wazoo for that week for lot's of folks, not just the Bobcats.

I hope that it's really good for the City, but it's a high risk kind of thing. Kind of like drafting a guy with a lot of potential but no idea if he's going to actually work out or not. :)

The best case is that things go well and the City gets a lot of good press. On the other hand something could go wrong and the City looks foolish. Worst case is that things go badly wrong (riots, infrastructure failure, etc.) and that people actually die.

It's a very high stakes gamble.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Exactly. MJ is getting PAID to move out for a couple of months.

All they're really going to be missing is pickup basketball time anyway, and they could takeover the local Y and still have plenty of opportunity to run

Any J&W students here that would be willing to "rent" me your student ID?

I'm definitely going to try and sneak in...

They have them in Raleigh, it's silly. Haven't seen any in Boston.

Hopefully the DNC will help with something. I was just on vacation in Myrtle Beach and went into one of those sports stores that sells all kinds of team apparel. Not a single bobcats item. Not even a lolCats hat or anything. :(

I did the same thing the other week. I was down at Myrtle with my girl and we stopped by one of those Tanger Outlets places. Decided to stop by a Lids store just for **** and gigs to see if they'd have anything Bobcats. Just one in a lower corner where you could hardly notice it
