Even though I'm tired of making excuses for failed Knicks teams, you have to make the point that this is exactly what was lacking last season: intelligent PG play. It went quite well with Lin since he can think, but unfortunately he can't penetrate without turning the ball over every second time or even dribble when trapped.
You need some player who can dribble and think. That is also why Marbury never made it to the Finals.
