Bogdan Tanjevic disses Kanter, Corbin, and the NBA

Post#1 » by Diggity Dave » Tue Aug 21, 2012 12:26 pm

Yeah, I've never heard of him either, but with Kanter being such a high pick, the quotes were worth discussing:

Source: http://www.ballineurope.com/us-basketba ... ches-6433/

On Enes Kanter not playing on the national team in 2012, Tanjevic said that “He is a great talent and we miss him a lot. He decided not to join us but honestly, he needs us more than we need him. He has not played or trained with us in the past three years. I [also] had to replace [Kerem] Gonlum, who was on holiday with his family. Without Kanter, it will be a little more difficult but I think we’ll be able to get into EuroBasket 2013.”

But Tanjevic also sees a problem with dependence on NBA stars at all – namely, the coaches. Was he surprised when Kanter declined to play with Team Turkey? “I’m not surprised at all … America is the perfect place to lose your head. Firstly, because the coaches [there] do not understand. In the NBA, there are just three or four coaches who have been there for 100 years, making billions and winning trophies. Others are weak. Including [Utah Jazz head coach] Tyrone Corbin…

“I should have told him that I was going him to do a great service by teaching one of its basketball players and he could have earned money on it. But I don’t want to talk to guys who do not know what they are doing. Kanter has forgotten how to play basketball. He will never be a center but he always starts with his back to the basket. As a power forward, this would be devastating. He’s 2.10 meters tall and [could be] the best shooter on the Turkish team, backcourt included. But in the NBA, he never takes a shot.”

bogdan tanyevic : enes has forget how to play basketball, he will never be a good center, he is a power forward and he can shoot better than all guards in turkey, but in nba you can never see hin shoot from outside including 3 pointer

bogdan tanyevic : usa is the perfect place to lost your head because there are only 3 or 4 good coaches , the other coache not understand basketball also corbin, i not call corbin because its hard for me to speak with someone who not understand how to make his player better

The thing that bothers me about this whole thing is what makes him an authority to judge anyone or anything when it comes to America or the NBA.

Foreigner superiority complex, they think when it comes to America everything is dumbed down, and just the quality of not being American makes them smart or more sophisticated.

a lot of NBA coaches DO suck though, especially when it comes to player development, but that's not really their job.
i think the euro system is better for in-season player development. i also think there is less compartmentalization in the euro game since everyone pretty much practices the same skills, regardless of position.

yeah, there are only a handful of heralded coaches, but that's because championships have been won by only a handful of teams.

It's pretty well known that NBA coaches are, compared to many international coaches, worse at developing players. It's not really that strange considering the NBA format doesn't really allow player development in the same kind of way that the European system allows. The whole NBA draft thing makes players development less important than it is in Europe where you often will sign players at a very young age and develop them from "scratch".

With that said, it really has nothing to do with the coaches being american or not. From what I understand, college coaches are better at developing young talent as compared to NBA coaches. Which would make sense considering they're a) handling younger and more raw talent b) are getting them ready for the pros.

And yeah, Kanter blows.

LOL at Tanjevic. Dude had major failures with the Turkish national team for years. He did go to the finals in 2010 World Championships but that was mostly thanks to the referees as the games were in Turkey.

Tanjevic alienated guys like Okur in his prime. Completely ignored one of the best centers in the history of the country named Besok in his prime who was tearing the European competition year in and out. Had trouble using Turkoglu efficiently. Failed with one of the most loaded European squads year in and out. His teams basically played chuck and duck all day. He also had zero player development. Funny how he talks about that now.

I never got the hoopla with Kanter. But, I don't really know who this Bogdan Tanjevic guy is, he may just be upset with Kanter not playing with Turkey anymore. I do agree that Kanter could probably use the game time, since he isn't seeing any action with Utah and didn't play at Kentucky, so he probably is very far behind in his development.

I dont understand the criticism about Kanter playing with his back to the basket though. Thats one skill that all bigmen should have much moreso than shooting.

Actually, this thing goes both ways. American coaches think that American way is better and European coaches think that European way is better.

Tanjevic's quotes were not appropriate. He was rude and he shouldn't have said that, no matter what he thinks about NBA. And I truly doubt that he knows how is Corbin doing his job. He is just angry because Kanter won't play for Turkey.

Sounds like someone who doesnt understand the game. When your playing with the strongest, the fastest, the most skilled and the most athletic basketball talents in the world, you cant use the same tricks you use in his league, they dont work on a consistent basis. He coaches an inferior level of basketball players so he doesnt understand the American game. Even in international play with international rules, our teams would crush their teams with him coaching his way. The man is simply ignorant.

I'm just curious as to how he knows what kind of a job Corbin is doing? I can see him looking at MPG, but unless he thinks Jefferson and Millsap suck, then what exactly is the problem with Cobin's coaching?

Bogdan = the Van Gundy of Turkey?

I wonder what the Turkish Michael Jordan has to say about this, actually I don't really give a damn

This dude's quote is different though. He's claiming that 26 of the 30 coaches in the NBA are simply incompetent. I don't think I've heard any NBA coach make similar comments about European coaches.

What I find interesting is that when asked about International players, NBA players/coaches make every effort to seem respectful in interviews and games, but they don't get the same respect in return...
