In certain parts of Europe at certain levels fundamentals are stressed much harder than they are in the U.S. but the blanket statement that "Europeans work harder on fundamentals" needs to stop.

"NBA players would rock in Europe" is true. But Tanjevic did not criticize the players.

NBA has the best players of the world. But not Europe. Of course talented NBA players will rule in Europe.

But he talks about the system and coaches in USA. These are different things.

Give Tanjevic the Knicks and let Knicks play in Europe. They will beat everyone there. But let a NBA coach teach an European team, then we will see how good NBA coaches are.

In Europe you do not have so many talented players, so you must get the max out of each player you have.

In NBA you can rely on the gifted players... This makes your coaches not good as those in Europe.

But of course Americans will not agree with this.

Mike DAntoni disagrees with you. Also all these American players that become NBA level players mostly are coached by American coaches their whole life. Just saying.

I'd say majority of European coaches are clueless. They can't handle egos. Most can't handle an 82 game schedule. Most can't truly develop big men. Heck, most don't teach fundamentals at all. There is a reason European big men struggle with their footwork in the NBA. The last great European big developed exclusively in Europe was Sabonis. Heck, Gasol brothers became dominant because of the time spent in the NBA under American coaches.

C'mon, lets look on your national team and lets see the past of the NBA.
Is it a coincidence, that most of your guys have their origins from Africa? 11 from your current NT are black.
When they live in USA of course they will be taught by Americans. But this footwork has a lot to do with genes. Everyone can teach how to play BBall, but this natural gift is a speacial thing. European bigs are not athletic as NBA players. You can not blame them for not being as quick as NBA bigs. Your white bigs are not better when it comes to footwork. You have a better gene pool, but this does not make your coaches, system and development better. And do not forget that you can not compare really poor countries like Serbia, Lithuania to USA. Do you think children in Europe have better opportunities than in USA when it comes to basketball?

See. That's why the world doesn't like Americans. You don't know what you are talking about. Ask someone like Popovich what he thinks about basketball in Europe. He just loves it, and he tries to learn a lot about it.

Chuck Daly was the first to say that Europeans worked harder on fundamentals.

Saying that average college players would become big stars in Europe is just stupid.

I can name you average college players becoming big stars in Europe.

Just spot some American players in the following list and ask anyone on the boards whether they ever heard about these guys:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euroleague ... ecade_Team

Here is a list of American coaches that are coaching overseas including many European clubs/national teams. I don't think managements of these teams agree with Tanjevic.

By the way, I am not American.

LOL at this racist comments. What does footwork have anything to do with genes?

Also you don't even realize that your last two statements are contradicting with eachother.

The quickness of someone is defined by his genes and this has something to do with the footwork. I do not want to make racist comments, please do not understand me wrong. You should read some scientific articles about this.

What is contradicting with eachother?

Oh so American players are only better than European players because of their genes? Explain Kevin Love?

Btw, are you trying to say that the only country with black people is America?

The ignorance of this thread is incredible.

You talk about better opportunities in US and then claim US system is not better.

And no. Footwork has very little to do with genes. It is fundamentals.

Going back to Tanjevic comments. This is what he says about Enes Kanter: He can never be a great center. So at the age of 20, he already pigeonholing a 6'11" 270 lbs player into a jumpshooting big man. As if being good at shooting jumpers would prevent someone to get better at posting up. I guess he never heard about Patrick Ewing. Heck, probably he doesn't even know Pau Gasol. That is as far as how his development plan goes.

I did not say that Ameircan players are only better than European players because of their genes. I said that you have there better gene pool. This is an advantage but this does not make you better. But in some cases you are automatically better because of your genes (muscles, ask a biologician or medician about this please).

Africa could compete theoritacally with american basketball players, if they could have your living standard and the school system from the begin for children. But forget what I say.

The opportunities are far better than in every country of the world. But the system of the coaches is not better.

You said European big men struggle with their footwork. Not in genereal. Footwork is a fundamental. But when you have 2.10 m guys, one like Dwight Howard and one like Mehmet Okur. You can clearly see the difference and who is clearly quicker.

So a team with limited outside shooting is going to rock someone playing a euro style? they would probably destroy most of the European teams, but it will not be because of anything then athleticism, not because of the coach, if they tried his style they would fail.

Tanjevic doesn't have a style. He is one of the worst, at least in the last 8 years or so, in offensive schemes in Europe. He is a chuck and duck coach on the offensive end without MD's passing. It is basically dribble dribble dribble and take a hero shot as shot clock expires. Forget about posting up anyone, he doesn't even try to play pick and roll or some kind of a motion offense. He is better on the defensive end though.

LOL!!!!! How many players on the French national team are black? If it's such an advantage, why do they constantly get sh*t on by Spain?

Footwork has nothing to do with anything you're born with, except for balance. Especially has nothing to do with quickness like you're implying.

Not to support his argument, I don't. But the United States have a talent pool of over 315 million in a culture that embraces basketball, where as France has a talent pool of 65 million and basketball as a fringe sport...

The same goes for a lot of other european countries.

Dissing a rookie coach and a rookie player. Cheap shot.

Kanter probably didn't want to play on the National team because despite being one of their best 3 players, he barely got any touches. The coach basically ran one play: "Chuck a 3 point shot."

They were an awful, frustrating team to watch last summer.

WhateverBro wrote:It's pretty well known that NBA coaches are, compared to many international coaches, worse at developing players. It's not really that strange considering the NBA format doesn't really allow player development in the same kind of way that the European system allows. The whole NBA draft thing makes players development less important than it is in Europe where you often will sign players at a very young age and develop them from "scratch".

It's actually a complete opposite. It's EUROPEAN coaches and "experts" that don't know s*** about developing a young talent.

All they do know is how to blend them in one gigantic faceless system where leading scorer of the team has an average of 11ppg, and to teach kids at the age of 13 how to stand in zone defense.

If there's one thing that America knows how to do it properly, is to develop young talent, as evident every frikking year where we have a potential next big star that might take over the league. From Jordan and Bird, to 96 class of Iverson, Nash, Kobe to Lebron, Wade, Carmelo to Chris Paul, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant and Dwight Howard, there's continuity of excellence.

Where's Europe, that has as a whole, even bigger population then the US, has produced what exactly? Dirk Nowitzki (who was being taught how to play in the US in the first place), Pau Gasol (basically the same thing) and....what else exactly?

It's just mind blowing that after all these decades of basically complete american basketball domination someone from Europe or some other part of the world is questioning american way of producing and developing a young talents. Heck, some would even suggest that european philosophy is the right one, which is basically the same as claiming that Angola is better in high tech then Japan.
