LA reportedly acquires Gonzalez, Crawford, Beckett from Sox

Post#1 » by powerhouse117 » Fri Aug 24, 2012 3:31 pm

Front page today says that it's rumored the Red Sox have placed Adrian Gonzalez on waivers. If true, do we go after him? I'm of the opinion we should because it looks as if he was uncomfortable playing in the pressure cooker that is Boston and may feel more comfortable in Toronto.

I don't even understand how the waiver system works so I have no clue where to begin on how we could acquire him.

not a chance in hell they'd trade him to another team in the AL East. And it's not a rumour, they have indeed placed him on waivers. However, he'll stay in Boston.

Many players get placed on waivers post August 1, in order to help them get traded if the need arises in August. Players must have cleared waivers to be traded (or can traded to the team that claimed him in waivers)

If the player gets claimed by someone, the team has the option to simply take him off waivers.

Virtually every player is placed on waivers this time of year. If a team claims him, the team that placed said player on waivers has the option of working a deal out with the team that put in a claim, let him go to said team for nothing (ie. take on a bad contract) or revoke the waiver placed on said player.

It doesn't mean anything that Gonzalez was put on waivers, and there's 0% chance he is traded to the AL East.

Question: If Team A claims a player placed on waivers by Team B, and a trade is then negotiated, do the players being sent from Team A need to clear waivers too? If Team A wants a package deal from Team B is that allowed?

Yes, anyone on a 40 man roster needs to clear waivers to be traded during August.

I'm not aware of any rules restricting multiple players in a negotiated trade of a waiver claim

This is morphing into a massive salary dump

@GordonEdes
Blockbuster: red Sox, Dodgers working on deal that would send AGon, Crawford, Beckett and Punto to LA. Hurdles remain, but closing in

The LAD ownership is fantastic! They don't give a **** how much players cost - they just want to win. They probably claimed Justin Upton too, haha

Boston's trying to dump some serious salary.

If this happens its going to be huge for both teams.

It's almost unfathomable that the Dodgers would take on almost $50 million in payroll in a trade. It sounds like it may be a straight salary dump with maybe very little or just prospects going back the other way.

I'm really shocked actually.

If that does go down it would mean that Boston would be in a much better financial position for the next few years by shedding much of those bad contracts. ****!

What a terrible deal for Boston from an on field perspective. I can't believe they paid so much for A. Gon and then just traded him away for nothing in a salary dump 2 years later after how well he's performed.

Carl Crawford's contract is starting to look worse than Vernon Wells' contract and they wanted to move on from Beckett but wow it's a huge price to pay.

What is the point of this dumb waiver system? I mean the team can basically pull the player back if a team claims him.

Why not just have the trade deadline moved to the middle of August or late August?

Looks like the Jays have some serious competitors in the FA pitching market now...
