G2.

I'm not getting a new phone now, but when my contract is up in a few months I'm either leaving or forcing them to give me a big upgrade for free or much cheaper then even my standard 2 year should allow.

Well, actually, if I stay with this service I'll get the phone I really want, so if the one I decide on was already cheap I'm not going to wind up with a phone I don't like just to force them to give me extra free value to keep their customer haha.

Now that we're on the subject... I want to upgrade my piece of crap phone as well... but I'm only interested in spending 60-70 each month. I have a blackberry (shutup Rich) and I want to move to Android. Physical keyboard is preferred but it's not a must.

60 to 70 a month?

You're probably looking at Boost, Metro or Virgin.

I've heard varying opinion on all of them.

You're in NYC almost exclusively though right? See which one gets the best coverage there.

But then you're going to have to pay an arm and a leg for a solid but already outdated phone because the price isn't worked into a 2 year contract.

Are you the only one on the plan?

And how much are you looking to spend on the new phone itself?

I just looked at Verizon's prices it'd cost $100 a month... You could save $10 by getting the 2 GB plan over the 4 GB but I wouldn't advise doing that...

I don't have any experience with T-MOBILE (spotty service around here) but it looks like they have unlimited - talk - text - data beginning at $80 a month...

Prepaid would be much better... though I'm open to a 1 year plan.

I would be the only person in the plan. I'm willing to spend up to 200 bucks. But the monthy charges can't exceed 70 bucks... I already think tht amount is a ripoff let alone agree to a triple digit charge.

Yeah it's looking like if you go with a major carrier $80 is going to be the minimum...

I wanted to switch to Verizon but they were already expensive but now with the forced share plan they're f**king criminal.

Oh, you mean I have to pay you a $40 charge on top of my data, talk and text just in case I have a tablet or laptop and want to tether?

GTFO.

If I want to tether, I'm rooting the phone and doing it without your permission.

Their pricing is just offensive.

$40 for the Share charge.
$70 for 4GB of data, talk and text.
$10 state and federal fees.

Wow.

Yeah I get it, unlimited talk as well, but with free nights and weekends and landlines at home, work, friends houses, etc., I don't need unlimited talk and I doubt many people do either and if they do their job probably pays for their phone or they're a teenage girl.

Jeff, BTW, Sprint has the plan with true unlimited data and text with 450 anytime minutes and nights and weekends that start at 7PM for $70 plus inevitable fees, which I believe would be around 4 to 5 bucks extra a month.

I'm not sure how their network is, but right now that's who I'm planning on switching too.

They give you true unlimited data as well, no throttling and they allow you to tether.

Till midnight tomorrow they're running a special on smart phones where you get a $100 Amex gift card in the mail and free activation if you're looking to do this now BTW.

You can tether without Verizon's permission (or any carrier), but sooner or later they'll find out and ask you to stop or force a tethering plan on your plan.

At this point of going prepaid, your big problems are selection of phones and if you want to go back to a contract, you'll be paying massive activation charges.

I switch carriers a lot, but I'm actually on Sprint right now. I have the unlimited everything plan so I pay around $120-130 a month including taxes. Service is solid, but phone selection needs work. I don't think they have 1 Windows 7 phone right now and limited high-end Androids, which is why I may switch carriers again with my next phone.

I'm a big fan of a physical keyboard and so I'd probably go with the Motorola they have right now.

Not sure if it's a new phone or not but it's got good features and pretty sure all Rola's have Gorilla Glass screens.

Maybe they'll come out with something interesting before Christmas though?

I would try the iPhone but I would feel dirty. About the only thing Apple I think I would buy at this point is a refurbished MacBook from a reliable place on Amazon like ABCD or something like that and even then probably still just go with a Dell.

I'm a big fan of physical QWERTY keyboards as well, but I eventually succumbed to all touch. The Razr Maxx is a solid phone for Verizon and has amazing battery life. Their HTC line is currently lacking.

Maybe they'll come out with something interesting before Christmas though?

Possibly, but I think the time most high-end Android phones are released are after the mobile conferences in the beginning of the year.

I think I've said it before. I love my Droid 4 but I should have got the Razr. I really don't use the physical keyboard (even though I thought I would), the touchscreen keyboard is phenomenal and the physical keyboard + case adds some noticeable bulk to the phone (compared to other smartphones).

Yes, but tethering on Sprint doesn't matter because you have unlimited data. If you tether on Verizon, you'll hit your data cap in no time.

I used to be on Verizon (through family plan) but when I went on my own, I switched to Sprint.

In NYC, the service is ok. It does what I need it to do. When I first joined, I got some dropped calls (with Verizon my calls never dropped but I was in NJ at that time). Over time, the service seemed to improve a little bit so the dropped calls were minimal.

However, I just moved to a new place and coverage is spotty right now, so even though I don't want to switch, I may need to go back to Verizon. I wish they had a deal for lowering your phone bill, you have FiOS cuz that's what I have.

Btw, Sprint's data speeds are somewhat slow, especially considering that they haven't rolled out 4G LTE in the NYC area yet. Although, I don't mind it because if I really want to use the Internet that bad, I'll just go on my computer.

tl;dr

Sprint
Pros
Unlimited Data
Cheaper than AT&T and Verizon

Cons
Spotty network/Some dropped calls
No 4G LTE in NJ/NYC therefore slow internet speeds

Return to Brooklyn Nets
