That was a digression, and not the main point. Many posters listed Carlos Arroyo and PR, I simply pointed out that he is an American by birth since Puerto Rico isn't a country, it's part of America. But since you brought it up, why should they have an Olympic team, should Ontario?
Distinct ethnicity and everything. They became a part of the USA relatively recently, they are not even a state, they're commonwealth. PR wanted its own team, understandable request, and USA had no problem with that, end of story. Olympics and other sport events are not necessary about whats on political map.

Read paragraph below and see if Ontario is in similar situation...Puerto Ricans became U.S. citizens in 1917, and the United States Congress legislates many aspects of Puerto Rican life.[14] However, the islanders may not vote in U.S. presidential elections.[15][16] Since 1947, Puerto Ricans have been able to elect their own governor. Its official languages are Spanish and English, with Spanish being the primary language. The island's current political status, including the possibility of statehood or independence, is widely debated in Puerto Rico. A referendum on statehood, independence, or continuance of the status quo will be held on November 6, 2012.

Don't have to. Neither one are independent countries; so neither one should have an Olympic team. Thought my point was pretty obvious.

They have their own team, it's called the United States of America. I don't know why you're being obtuse. The Olympics are a competition of nations across the globe held every four years. For some reason there are a few exceptions, PR and USVI being the most notable. Should Nunavut or St, Piere and Miquelon have teams?

Why do you continue to be a proud ignorant?
I make it easier for you to understand highlighting 3 things that unlike Ontario:
- PR cannot vote in the US presidential elections
- PR has own elected governor
- later this year they'll vote on political status / independence

Re: How many nationalities have played for the Raptors?
what about the country of scotland. competes as the UK in the olympics, has its own parliament, is ruled by the UK, and competes as its own nation in FIFA.
the point is, theres no point. were just pointing to places on a map where former raptors came from. were all aware that puerto rico is an american territory.

1. stop the name calling
2. sorry, but Leo is relatively correct. its similar to Quebec having its own Olympic representation, or Palestinians having their own representation. The way I see it (and, obviously, not the way the IOC sees it) is either you're a country or you're not. so either Puerto Rico is part of the US or it isn't. its irrelevant that they're having a vote regarding their independence later this year.

Yogi - I doubt you have the expertise to give us a definitive answer on these complex questions of nationhood and identity (who really does?), but I do know that after your recent over-indulgence in name-calling in that dancepak thread a while back, you don't have the credibility to warn someone over merely calling someone else ignorant, one of the least aggressive insults going around here.

1) Leo was the first one to call someone else on this subject obtuse (see previous page): "I don't know why you're being obtuse." Would calling one obtuse is acceptable rather than ignorant?
2) PR cannot vote for US presidential elections (they have own governor) how is this compared to Quebec? Further more PR is not a US state (not represented in the congress) while Quebec is a province with full representation like any other Canadian province
3) Palestine did compete at the Olympics...enough said...
When one refuses to read my posted info saying: "I don't have to" while continuing to refute the argument, how would you call that person? Do you think calling a poster ignorant (since he refuses to educate himself on the subject) is too much?
I've been called much worst things (so have been many others) on this board I don't think I deserve to be called out on this!

Puerto Rico is not an independent country. Puerto Ricans are Americans by birth, with an American passport, American social security number and are free to live anywhere in America without a visa, since they are well, American. I'm not getting what you're not getting.

a mod, that's who.

glad that you chipped in with your feelings. now stop backseat modding. consider that a public warning.
