Re: BAT 8.0 TRADE DISCUSSION (DRAFT IN OTHER THREAD) PART II
Just saw the response...
The Magic had pieces to get talent, they just made horrible deals.
The Magic had the opportunity to have a GREAT tandem in Dwight Howard & Marcin Gortat. Stan wouldn't put them on the floor together, so we traded him and other pieces away for Hedo Turkoglu - a guy that at one point fit great in SVG's system.
Look at the guys we let go from our rosters compared to the ones that we brought in. They are all just shooters to support Dwight.
When he was new... he had a young, long, athletic All-Star SF that could score inside and out. What did he do? He turned him in to a 3-pt specialist and nothing more. Lewis wasn't always just a shooter. In Seattle, the best aspect of his game was on the block...not outside the three point line.
At this point, there is nothing you can do to fix it...but we had chances. That is why he got fired along with Otis. They deserved to be let go...not just because Dwight wanted them out. The team got to the point that is was 100% based on his failing system. Like I said...It was at it's peak when we had guys in their prime. They faded, we made bad trades...and we were still trying to do the same thing. How is that a good coaching strategy?
Like I've been saying...his system works - but it isn't consistent. Again, shooting a poor 30% from 3PT is better than a solid 44% from 2. Stan's entire life is built around that fact. The problem is that you can't win a 7 game series against other elite teams like that. I am not saying the guy doesn't win games, I'm saying his style isn't built to win an NBA title. It is built to win a Math competition.
Coaches do deserve credit but it sure does make you look good when you have a 3-time defensive player of the year. You make it seem like he turned Jameer & Hedo in to good defenders. Go back and look at the numbers apposing players have put up against them. It isn't pretty. Dwight erases mistakes and prevents 2nd opportunities. That is why the Magic have been so good on defense. Not because Stan implemented a great system.
He was definitely a skilled back to the basket player at that point...but he has improved a great deal since then. I'm not saying he was the player he is now, back then. You said the guy could just dunk. That is far from the truth, even in 2009. Just basing my statement off what you said...not saying the guy was who he is now.
I may be a Magic fan...but I am that first, not a huge Dwight homer. Am I a fan? Yeah...but I am just as quick to be critical of him as I am to give him props. He can't score when they need him because of his foul shooting. Not because of his lack of post game. If he gets the ball in the post with the game on the line, you'd be a fool not to foul him and to just let him go at you.
It's not like all of the sudden they all got really old. Lewis should have been just entering his prime. Hedo was indeed at the peak of his peak, but his drop off was ridiculous for one year.
What is the biggest difference between that 09 team and any team we've had since then?
Hustle players - slashers - defenders (Matt Barnes, Courtney Lee, Michael Pietrus)
As we got rid of those guys, we got worse and worse.
We kept trading quality guys for players that fit Stan's system. That is why we got worse and worse. You act like Stan had no say in what guys were being brought in. Why do you think the two went out the door together? THEY built the team.
Regardless of whatever anyone may believe the reasons are, he had Shaq & D-Wade and then Dwight Howard + 2 All-Stars and couldn't get the job done. In the NBA, that means you choke when it counts. He has proven he can't make adjustments. He doesn't develop talent. He can't get along with his players. I agree that all coaches have weaknesses...Stan just has A LOT.
moocow007 wrote:????? Wasn't the problem, the reason, why Dwight Howard wanted out because that team couldn't change enough to add enough talent around him for him to be happy? So what change was there? The same plays? Their offense was Dwight Howard using mostly his physical prowess in the paint and one or two 3 point shooters...that's all they had. Whether it was Lewis or Anderson, it's the same ****. So what change did you want him to make? Try to make Anderson a post player? Try to make Jameer Nelson a real championship caliber true PG? When you have a post player that still relies more on his physicl tools than refined skills and a couple 3 point shooters, how many changes can you get?

The guy has won 48 playoff games in 6 trips to the playoffs and has a playoff winning percentage higher than most of the head coaches in the NBA's regular season percentage. So is crunch time some other time besides playoffs?
Like I've been saying...his system works - but it isn't consistent. Again, shooting a poor 30% from 3PT is better than a solid 44% from 2. Stan's entire life is built around that fact. So should we give any head coach any credit for any defense? No? So it was just all Dwight Howard standing there and everyone looking around watching him? So him being an assistant to Pat Riley obviously didn't teach him the importance of defense and how to go about getting his team to play defense?
Coaches do deserve credit but it sure does make you look good when you have a 3-time defensive player of the year. You make it seem like he turned Jameer & Hedo in to good defenders. ????? So he wasn't limited back in their Championship run vs. the Lakers? That was how many years ago? So he must have played that whole season like he jumped 4-5 years into the future? Is that right? Is that what you're trying to argue?
He was definitely a skilled back to the basket player at that point...but he has improved a great deal since then. I'm not saying he was the player he is now, back then. You said the guy could just dunk. That is far from the truth, even in 2009. Just basing my statement off what you said...not saying the guy was who he is now.
Spin either way? Dude...he's NOT THAT good offensive post player that you're making him out to be. Stop with the exaggeration about how good he is in the post offensively. We've all seen him play. The difference is we don't look at him with any homerish glasses. He's an absolutely great defensive player (one of the best) and obviously no one is saying he can't score (his stats obviously say he can score enough), but he could not score when they needed him the most is the one of the biggest reasons why the Magic as a team couldn't go all the way.
And why do you think they were all playing at their peak? For the love of grief give the poor guy some credit. He never made a single adjustment? Oh come on. So any old coach who don't make a single adjustment can win and go deep in playoffs? And when was the last time Nelson, Turkoglu and the other guy even remotely able to defend?
It's not like all of the sudden they all got really old. Lewis should have been just entering his prime. Hedo was indeed at the peak of his peak, but his drop off was ridiculous for one year.
What is the biggest difference between that 09 team and any team we've had since then?
Hustle players - slashers - defenders (Matt Barnes, Courtney Lee, Michael Pietrus)
As we got rid of those guys, we got worse and worse.
And that was his fault? So what he should have done is to take over Otis Smith's job? Smith was the one that buried the team in giant contracts that couldn't be moved (everyone that was mentioned). What did you want him to change? His overpaid PF? His ineffective PG? His lack of a real 2nd option...or...when it really counted...lack of a 1st option?
We kept trading quality guys for players that fit Stan's system. That is why we got worse and worse. You act like Stan had no say in what guys were being brought in. Why do you think the two went out the door together? THEY built the team.
Is he Phil Jackson? NO!!! Has he won an NBA Championship? NO!!! But if it was that easy then wouldn't every head coach do it? You think?
And if you go ask fans of just about every team in the NBA what they think of their head coach you'll find that they'll think the other teams head coaches are better. It's natural. EVERY SINGLE HEAD COACH has weaknesses. Very VERY few of them have been able to win it all (in fact currently in the NBA there's only 3 that has...and one of them really just tagged along more than anything else...IF you listen to their fans). So does that mean every other team in the NBA (and in this BAT) is doomed?[

HC: Rick Adelman
C: Andrew Bynum/Zaza Pachulia/
PF: Tim Duncan/Pachulia/Al Harrington
SF: Tashaun Prince/AH
SG: Arron Afflalo/Mo Williams
PG: Mo Williams/Isaiah Thomas
Love your frontcourt combo, Duncan and Bynum on the interior will give alot of trouble on the defense and seeing Duncan play more of the high post/outside with Bynum in the middle on offense. Also like how Duncan can be a mentor to Bynum who desperately needs one. Tayshaun Prince even at 32 is still solid and can contribute defensively with his length as well as hit that corner three similar to his Detroit days. Afflalo is a nice two way player and Mo Williams is a great pick to play off the interior of Bynum and Duncan. Great defensive starting unit with enough offense to keep up.
Harrington is interesting as the 6th man, has had some bonehaded moments but I think surrounded by vets and with a Adelman he'll calm down a bit. Don't really agree with the Isaiah pick but understand why you picked him. Pachulia is solid as a backup big. Your bench is a nice offensive unit as a whole which compliments your defensive starting unit. Only concern is that your pg position is a weak spot defensively and you'll have some trouble against the more athletic run and gun teams defensively. Great team overall though, I'd put you into the contender status.

Stan Van Gundy would be an amazing assistant coach - he is great with preparation. GREAT.
After that? He has no strengths.

Probably the best 1-2 combo in the whole BAT with Paul and Love. All the pieces fit nicely around them, Tiago to help cover for Loves defensive weaknesses and lee and hayward to spread the floor. Kind of hard to say for sure as you still have like 7 picks left

Blue Ninja: I hate teams like yours in these things. You can't possibly win. You can get the best youth, but to me you should be deducted points for cap management. IF everyone develops like you hope, most of the team will be hitting free agency at the same time. It's rare for teams to load up on youth and they all pan out, it usually just doesn't happen. I understand why you build a young team, but I personally hate it in these things.
Knicksfan: Absolutely no play making, praying that Bynum emerges. Mo has never really had to lead a team on his own, he was always that change of pace PG really. Banking on Duncan to play heavy minutes is a recipe for disaster, nice fit next to Bynum but simply to old at this time. Afflalo and Prince provide some offense, but can't create for themselves. Pretty solid defensive team though, just really lacking that point guard.
Fury: You got one of if not the best 1-2. Problem is that after that you got nothing else really. People really thought Hayward would make that jump this year, he was solid. Lee I thought you took way to early, he's a decent player but nothing game changing. Splitter is a solid goon, but can he anchor a defense like you want him to? Eh doubt it.

Thanks Grind. Im high on Isiah actually, hes also a solid defender despite his height. But hes got the strength/athletic ability/wingspan to make up for it. Could have trouble against the taller guards though.
Agree with struggling against some up tempo teams, but those will be teh same teams taht will have trouble against me in the half court.Harrington is also another 3pt shooting option. Hes a 38 percent 3pt shooter over the last 6 or 7 years.

Stan Van Gundy would be an amazing assistant coach - he is great with preparation. GREAT.

Thanks for the review. For me personally, all of those guys have great potential and all of them are assets. Im trying to get as many assets as possible and trade for superstars in the near future. It didn't happen this year, but I had talks for some superstars. If they build their value further, there is no doubt in my mind I can get a superstar and develop others to be great players to build around the guys I get. I dont see the cap management thing being an issue at all. They all won't hit free agency the same year, since they will either be resigned or traded for vets when the right time comes. You can also trade them for draft picks if they havent quite reached their potential, knowing you have to resign them all. The point is you have assets now and in the future. Having assets is only a good thing imo.

Melo: Some interesting pieces fitting in. I do think Conley is one of the more underrated PG's in the league, I do like him. Chandler is a good two way player, Howard is Howard. However Jamison is perplexing to me. Jamison because at this point in time is just offense and little else, I barely remember Jamison being on a competitive team in the past four years. At age 36 it's asking a lot IMO. Lamb is a solid prospect, but could easily go the Courtney Lee route instead of becoming the star that some believe. Ton of talent, little fire it seems at times.
Jazz: Under reconstruction, we'll be back.

Duncan is only playing 28 mpg or so. Thats why i have harrington and Pachulia. Mo Williams is still a solid PG, his PG numbers have been low with Clippers cuz he played with Paul/Billups and Foye. He is a solid PnR player though, and his main job will be to feed the post, spread the floor, and knock down the open jumper.
How cant Afflalo and Prince not create their own offense? Then i got harrington and isiaih who can also create offense. Im giong to be primarily a post team and 3pt shooting team. I should have no problem piling on the points, along with playing stellar defense.

Yeah it's a ton of potential, unknown potential which makes it hard to know where they will end up. Considering this event, that's not a winning team. Granted like I said I know what your going for. However why trade anyone if they develop like you think they can? Lilliard, Beal, Davis, Jonas and Leonard at the moment will be hitting FA at the same time. Anything after that as far as future trades, signings is all hypothetical at this point in time.
Mecca: Pause? Pause... That Method Man would be the victor? Pause.
Hesitant to rate your team, by the time I'm done typing you might have another three trades done. Probably one of the more balanced teams here, and goes as far as you believe in Lin. I think he will be solid, some might think he will blow up. Griffin/Noah is good, that offense/defense duo is cliche though. [Granted I did it to] Batum is good defensively, gradually developing offensive game. However the back court is just filled with question marks. You swung for the fences with Lin/Mayo, people like to bring up Mayo's rookie year as to what he will do as a starter but conveniently forget how terrible that team was. Granted I do think he will be a 15PPG type of guy. It's a pretty damn balanced team overall though.
