Referring to it as indefensible is indefensible. He's trying to make a play and not get hit, down 6 points at that time. He's not thinking about the 49ers getting a long return, making a big play, and hitting a 63-yard field goal, all in the course of 20 seconds.

I'd say it is on par with a WR or RB needlessly running out of bounds short of the 1st in that situation. You can't make idiotic mistakes like that.

You know before the snap that, at worst, you want the clock to at least keep running.

That's a really bad analogy. If you run out of bounds short of the 1st there is a 100 percent chance you don't score. If you throw the ball away with 20 some seconds the other team doesn't score a high majority of the time.
