I'm still pretty certain it is Tiger Woods, but if it's a soccer player, it isn't Messi.

people that know ronaldo but not messi are probably thinking of this guy:

I like my fishbowl thank you very much. It seems this thread was made to bait US posters. Or that's what it's turned into.

No it's not. It's just that if people are wanting a global answer, they have to accept a global answer and can't live with just a response from 4% of the globe.

You realize the 4% have rarely or never heard of these people or care about these atheletes. What did you except them to say.

A better question would be: who's the biggest global icon of all time?

Jordan, Ali, Messi, etc.?

I'd be really interested to hear people's answers.

I don't disagree with anyone that lives outside of the US to say Messi. His popularity is massive.

But when you talk global that means the planet. You can harp on the 4% number all day long. But you are blatantly ignoring the voice from that 4% population like they don't matter. If they don't then maybe this thread should be on an international only forum.

The US is not insignificant on the global stage. They are part of it.

That is getting closer to the point. If the 4% have never heard of these other people like Tendulker then they do not have a global perspective just as that hypothetical poster from India does not have a global perspective. However, they should at least realize they are only 4%, not 100% and that their choices may not reflect what the other 96% of the world is saying.

The local 4% is coming up with one answer and the other 96% from around the globe is coming up with another answer. So be it, each has their say, but for the 4% to continue to insist their answer is correct does show short sightedness.

As I mentioned, perhaps if the 4% will only recognize their answers as true, they should reword the question to only their 4% boundaries .. i.e. Who is the biggest sports icon in the US.

I just asked 7 of my co-workers if they had heard of Messi before. None of them had. One guy thought she was a porn star. My boss thought he was the CEO of Dell. One lady asked if he was the guy who played tennis. Very few normal people now who Messi is. Only hardcore soccer fanatics. Most MLS players probably have never heard of him (like Diamitidis and NBA players for example)

I can't say it better but that's what I have been saying for a long, long time, so much better explained.

The 4% didn't technically start this thread. Or let's put it this way, the OP posted from outside the 4%.

If we were to ask who is the biggest US sports Icon there would be a bunch of people probably most international people have never heard of.

You can't fault the 4% for not following everyone else and I wouldn't fault the 96% of the world for not getting down with the 4% follows.

The reality is Messi is off the charts popular around the world. He is a no name here. No biggie.

messi isn't a no name in the US, people really shouldn't say that.

why not? obviously people know of him. Certainly there are americans that follow soccer. ( like you) that know him.

But you know that he is not a recognizable person, face or athlete here by the general pop.

Most people know who messi is. Even in the U.S. It was just like Ronaldihno.

Of course they haven't heard of Leonardo Messi. He doesn't exist.

But seriously, Are we still playing the ignorance game? It's already pretty much established he doesn't have the strongest presence in Usa. But international users can also ask their own colleagues if they've heard of some of these names and they wouldn't have.

This is pretty much what I have been saying. To that point, with Football( US) and Baseball being 2 of the biggest sports in the US. I suffer no illusions that anyone outside the US would know stars from these leagues.
