Just ahead of the presumed iPhone 5 launch, Amazon has slashed the pricing of the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S III for AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

The move comes just a day before Apple is slated to introduce its next iPhone, the iPhone 5, which is rumored to cost the same as the iPhone 4S, Apple’s current iPhone.

If that rumor holds up, iPhone 5 pricing will be $199.99 for a 16GB model, $299.99 for a 32GB model and $399.99 for a 64GB model.

It appears that Amazon may be trying to lure in consumers with a cheaper Galaxy S III price tag. The $99.99 price tag for the Galaxy S III will be around only for a limited time. Amazon did not say how long the sale would last for though we assume it will be around for at least the duration of the iPhone 5 pre-order period which figures to be from September 12th to September 21st.

A source told Gotta Be Mobile that the iPhone 5 release date is on September 21st.

The 32GB Samsung Galaxy S III price remains unaffected at Amazon and currently sits at $249.99 on-contract across the board.

It appears that Amazon’s deal is only applicable to those who are signing up for new contracts. Those who are looking to upgrade are going to have to shell out $179.99, a much prettier penny than $99.99.

Oh snap. All my friends have been telling me that the Iphone 5 wasn't coming out at $199. An iphone 5 @ $199 > Galaxy S III @ $99? Decisions, decisions!

a6 chip in the 5 is 2x faster than the a5 chip in the 4 and 4s models. basically the same phone as the 4 series other than the bigger screen, faster processor, more vibrant colors, graphical/framerate boost, 20% lighter. battery life is supposed to be a lot better, yet they didn't talk about it. kinda disappointed.

and yeah $79.99 a month is probably the best you're going to do. especially if that includes the unlimited plan

I dunno, I'm not totally sold on either. I liked Iphone for the games because there is no signal in the subway, so I can't browse. But now I don't even play games because I have a book reader. I'm thinking I can get emulator for the S3 if i do want to play.

Hopefully, a friend has a jailbroken Iphone 5 I can screw around with soon. That will make this decision easier.

The aluminum finish is different on the white and black models: silver for white, slate for black.

iPhone 4 now free on a new contract, iPhone 4s 16GB is $99 on new contract, pre-orders for 5 start friday. 3GS support is dropped.
