He only played 2 seasons in the NBA and seeing as we're using Basketball-reference as our sole provider of data I didn't have much choice!

I'm saying you could pick the other year if it was better, as far as the rules go. I don't even remember the guy unfortunately

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - Fat's pick
No it wasn't the other season was the reason he was named a chucker.
That was when he was 15th man for the Spurs, played very sparingly and drove his %'s down.
I was going to pick him in last years draft but chickened out, thought I would honour him this year.
Unfortunately he is about as athletic as Ammo after the knee surgery. So think of current Ammo with a Glen Rice shooting touch and you get the idea. Great scorer, too slow to guard anyone remotely athletic.

Eh, you don't need 5 defensive gods on the floor to have a god tier defensive lineup anyway

Team Summary
It all starts with Magic Johnson, the greatest point guard, facilitator, team leader and most versatile player in the last 40 years. This team is built to cater to the strengths of Magic, which is to get on the break and let Magic do what he does best, run the fast break. We have athletic big men finishers in Ewing, Chambers, Sampson and McDyess who will be on the receiving end of countless alley oops and transition dunks. All four guys love to get out on the break (this is Ewing prior to bad knees) We have lights out shooters in Mullin and Petrovic to spread the floor and create space for Magic and the finishers. At the other guard spot we have perhaps the most lethal open floor player the league has seen in Iverson. Nobody is faster from baseline to baseline than Iverson and when he has the ball running at the defense he will either finish or get fouled 9 times out of 10. When Magic isn't running at you with the ball its Iverson. Pick your poison.
There are a lot of great offensive teams in this mini league, however, I believe this team is the best collection of offensive talent all of which compliment the alpha dog, Magic. Nobody can run a team like Magic. He makes everyone around him better and his passing in infectious.
When the fast break opportunities aren't there, this team is still versatile enough to get points in the halfcourt. Iverson is one of the greatest iso players ever. Magic can work in the lost post better than any guard. Chambers and Magic are unstoppable in the pick around as evidenced in the 1987 All-star game. And Mullin and Petrovic can get any team out of a zone, especially when paired with Ewing (a deadly shooter from 18 feet) and Chambers a solid mid range shooter as well.
The passing of this team is a major strength. After magic you still have guys like Mullin and Mason who can operate as point forwards. Iverson who can slide to point guard as well as Penny Hardaway who can initiate the offense while playing point guard, shooting guard or small forward. We could put out a lineup with four players who can run the point - Magic, Iverson/Cassell, Penny/Mullin, Mason and a big man.
Big lineups creating matchup nightmares. Imagine a team of Magic, Penny, Mason, Sampson and Ewing on the floor together, pounding you into submission if the game slows down.
The team is efficient. Bowen, Iverson and Gill are the only players on the team who are not shooting 49% or higher.
This team won't be the best defensive team in the league but they can get stops when needed. Bowen is on the squad to slow down the many stellar wings. Bowen is perhaps the premier man to man defender. Ewing is averaging an astonishing 4 blocks per game. Mason is a rugged defender capable of locking down most forwards. Davis is a role playing thug off the bench. Iverson plays the passing lanes to the tune of 2.5 steals a game and Penny and McDyess are no slouches on defense either.
Rebounding? Yeah, not a problem. Magic, Penny, Mason, McDyess, Ewing, Sampson and Davis are all among the best rebounders at their positions.
I really dont see a weakness. This team can run better than anyone, score in transition better than anyone, scorers all over the roster, a premier iso scorer for crunchtime, efficiency, size, rebounding, point forwards and point guards to fill 4 of the 5 positions and arguably the best wing defender in the league. I realize that everyone has scorers and superstars on their teams, but not every team was built to perfectly fit the style of the greatest point guard of all time. This team has it all and then some.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - lamar's pick (jdw skipped)
Random thought before I post my last pick - what if we changed the format of the draft a bit. We could do the usual voting, but let's say it would be like a regular season - the results of the votes would determine the seeding for the playoffs (with the first eight places qualifying for them). First places goes against the eighth, second seed versus seventh, etc. and we would vote on every series and evaluate the match-ups between the two teams. Why do I think this isn't a bad idea? We have so many greats on our teams that it's hard to choose a team that is superior to others. This way the most stacked teams probably win the regular season, but in the playoffs the team that is built smartly and doesn't have any deficiencies will probably win.
Pros:
We'll have stuff to do on the board until the season starts as this format would probably take us into the early October
In my opinion, it will be fun to do the playoffs series thing - two team owners making their case why their team has the upper hand in the match-up
Cons:
You can feel that the enthusiasm has dwindled a bit, not everyone would have time for this
There's a chance that the strongest team doesn't win, I suppose hypothetically you can walk into match-ups that are either very suitable for your team or aren't

Great outside shooters will always be able to get a decent contract in the NBA as you'll always have a use for them. With my last pick of this draft I select the white stiff who can shoot lights out - Steve Novak, 2011-12.

Payton/Hardaway/Blaylock
Jordan/Toney/Bates
Rodman/English/Novak
Webber/Wallace/Walker
Parish/Daugherty/Bol
- Devastating defensive team. Since I have three of the greatest defensive players of all time, I don't have any problems of teams finding any big mismatches on offense. Let's take Fat's (I got to add that you really did a great job at filling that roster, it looks scary on paper) team, per example, Rodman can guard Magic, we'll put GP on Iverson and Michael on Mullin. Problem solved. My bigs aren't any schmucks either. Maybe Parish is the only one whom people mention as a good defensive player, however all of them are somewhat athletic and mobile. Webber, Wallace, Walker, Daugherty, Parish - every one of them can run the floor and play a faster game, despite the fact that those are some large guys.
- A roster that I can adapt to every situation. I can imagine Rodman usually playing 28 minutes, while English has the opportunity to get as many points as he can in 20. However, if there isn't a need for my defensive line-up to be out there for that long, I can go with English in the starting line-up. If we need to speed the game up, I can go with Webber at the five and one of my little guys (Hardaway or Blaylock) running the point. With 12 greats on the roster there are countless ways of giving out PT. Daugherty is about as good as Parish (I imagine both playing 24 mins), all three of my power forwards are about on the same level (would it be crazy to give everyone double-digit minutes? I honestly think that that's not a bad idea), we touched on Rodman/English. I probably can't piss off Jordan, but I imagine Andrew Toney playing 10-12 mins during the regular season. GP is probably the best of the point guards, but Hardaway and Blaylock will get a chance to play 6 to 9 minutes as they can change the game pretty fast - Timmy was a guy who could knock down some threes in a hurry, while Blaylock can come in and force some turnovers, run the break and assist the other guys for baskets.
- Michael Jordan. That's all I need to say. In the dying minutes the ball will be in the hands of arguably the greatest winner of all time (Bill Russell disagrees)...
-... and not only MJ is capable of being a game changer. I have guys who can change the style or tempo of the game in a small amount of time or guys that can just come out and have unbelievable performances. Rodman will probably get on somebody's nerves and shut him out of the game, Webber and Wallace are two guys who should have had better careers, but that doesn't bother me when they're on this team. The spotlight isn't on them and the breakouts (Webber going for a 20/10/5, Sheed catching fire from downtown) they'll have once in a while will be appreciated. I think that I already mentioned Tim Bug, Toney and English as guys who can change the game with their scoring and activity off the bench. You can't forget Manute Bol and Billy Ray Bates. If we think about this as a 82 game regular season, then you have to account for injuries, suspensions and whatnot. Well, those guys wouldn't be downgrades when being dressed up for the game. Bol can shut down our paint, Bates can score 30 out of nowhere.
- A point that you might not like, but I think this matters - every one of my guys was a part of a good team. There aren't any 20-point guys from 25-57 teams. Everyone made the playoffs in their respective seasons, off my 12-man roster everyone besides Sheed made the second round of the playoffs, four of my starters are legitimate winners (GP, Jordan, Rodman, Parish). I think this matters.
I hope my post and points made sence as it now seems like my post doesn't have the best structure.
Edit: My bad, Andrew Toney also didn't make the second round that years. That's the over-hyped Philly team who was defending its title and was upset by Michael Ray Richardson and the Nets in the first round.

That's the over-hyped Philly team who was defending its title and was upset by Michael Ray Richardson and the Nets in the first round.

lamar. i like your idea about playoff seeding and head to head matchups. i think that could be fun. however, as you mentioned the interest in this seems to be fading lately and with training camp and preseason right around the corner i fear we either wont be able to get all 10 to commit or we'll get halfway through and people will give up. that being said, if everone else is up for it, i'll gladly change the format.

maybe to make it a little easier, we only take the top 4 seeds and put them in, rather than 8. 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3. winners advance to finals.

if you havent done it already, go ahead and post your final team summary with rosters, depth charts and playing style.
we can vote for the winner (or for top four playoff seeding) starting once everyone has posted their summary.

This for me,I have always favored matchups but for whatever reason didn't say it aloud.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - Fat's pick
My Team Depth chart.
Rajon Rondo 2011-12, Kevin Johnson 1989-90, Doc Rivers 1986-87
Vince Carter 2000-01, Ricky Pierce 1989-90, Šarūnas Marčiulionis 1991-92
Larry Bird 1987-88, Jalen Rose 2000-01, Andrew Gaze 1993-94
Dirk Nowitzki 2004-05, Amare Stoudemire 2007-08 , Mike Mitchell 1980-81
Dwight Howard 2010-11, Mark Eaton 1984-85, Andrew Bogut 2009-10
I'm not going to write a big summary, most of these players are known to everyone and you know what they bring.
My team has the best white man to play in the NBA, the best Euro, the best Aussie and the best White Stiff.
What more can you ask for.
There is a good mix of defenders, scorers, distributors, shooters and athletes.
Rondo is as fast as anyone on the NBA court, and will be a great leader on this team while providing great defence.
But it will be Larry's team. He sets the tone with his elite play and expects the maximum from all of his team mates.
I love the mix and believe they could take on anyone.

Arguably THE BEST in the game, with the twin tower KG and The Admiral anchoring, while Sidney Moncrief, the GOAT perimeter man defender, shuts down one of the guards. Also don't forget Wade,Hill and 10' Gasol.
Offense:
A well-rounded team with options all over the floor.PnR-based offense and with some ISOs.Terrific spacing with Dale Ellis and Glen Rice, and great passing overall with Hill and KG setting up plays.
Players to watch:
The Milwaukee Bucks combo------------Sidney Moncrief & Terry Cummings
82-83 MVP Voting:
1 Moses Malone
2 Larry Bird
3 Magic Johnson
4 Sidney Moncrief
5 Julius Erving

Chris Paul/Baron Davis/Derek Harper
Mitch Richmond/Dan Majerle/Hersey Hawkins
Carmelo Anthony/Bernard King/Ken Norman
Karl Malone/Kevin Willis/
Tim Duncan/Bill Laimbeer/Kevin Duckworth/Will Perdue
Offense: First of all, I tried to pick players on each position who can light it up from everywhere on the court. So outside shooting is obviously one of the strengths of my team, with Paul directing the floor. Still, each player in the starting five is also capable of creating his own shot and easily dropping 30. Karl Malone and Duncan are the two greatest power forwards of all time, but I'm putting Duncan at center for this one. Both should be a nightmare for the frontcourts of the other team. I think also everyone knows what kind of player Laimbeer is. Perfect backup for center who can also hit the three, and Willis is also a good 20/10 backup. Duckworth and Perdue will be garbage time players, but are good defenders and rebounders. Combined with either Malone, Duncan or Laimbeer their offensive flaws will not be noticable. At the wings, Melo, Richmond and King known as three of the greatest scorers of all time, backed up by Thunder Dan, Hawking and Norman who are also capable of 20ppg. At PG we have Paul who's going to direct everything and easily make room for everyone if we wish to play via p&r, p&p. Malone, Duncan, Laimbeer, Melo and King all fit pretty well for this.
Defense: I have good defenders at every position and players capable of defending multiple positions. Thunder Dan will also defend anyone from PG to smaller PFs and will move to SF for heavy minutes if Melo or King should struggle defensively. Norman, who is a good defender as well, could take over too. Laimbeer will be a nightmare for your best power forward or center, and everyone knows that Duncan and Malone are great defenders as well.
My lineups will be versatile and easily able to adapt. I can go with regular lineup or small with King/Melo/Laimbeer at the front court. I don't have a third-string power forward but Duncan or Laimbeer, or as mentioned, Melo, can take over that spot without problems.

JDW disappeared.
anyone else care to post a summary of their team? we should start voting for seeds (1-4) by tomorrow.
the plan is to have everyone pick their 4 favorite teams ranked 1st to 4th. you get 4 points for a 1st place vote and 1 point for a 4th place vote. top 4 teams advance to playoffs.

Re: Scavenger Hunt Draft - post your team summary (jdw skipp
PG: Isiah Thomas / Dennis Johnson / Maurice Cheeks
SG: Ray Allen / Latrell Sprewell / John Starks
SF: Dominique Wilkins / Walter Davis / Jerry Stackhouse
PF: Shawn Kemp / Chris Bosh / Jeff Foster
CE: Shaquille O'Neal / Larry Nance / Brendan Haywood
Safe to say my team will lead the league in highlight plays and dunks on opponents' heads.
Team Philosophy: I built a better version of the Monstars. So much swagger, so much violence, so much evisceration. Seriously, this team is scary.
The offensive attack will be deadly both in transition and in the half court. Nique and Kemp filling the lanes with Ray trailing is just unfair. That doesn't change when you bring guys like DJ, Davis, Sprewell, Starks, and Nance off the bench. Halfcourt will obviously run through the unstoppable Shaq. My 3/4 play perfectly off of him as they crash the two lanes he isn't filling and Ray continues to drop bombs. Isiah is the perfect maestro to find guys where they need it and can take over if necessary.
Defensively, we're going to follow Nolan Richardson's mindset. They're going to constantly hound the opponents and force them into mistakes, whenever they get to the rim, I have guys like Shaq, Kemp, and Nance waiting to swat shots. I can sub in 4 different guys off the bench with little to no drop off in defensive intensity. I have girth in the paint with Shaq/Kemp, and plenty of quickness in Bosh/Nance.
Athleticism: doesn't get any better than the team I'm trotting out. Shaq, Kemp, and Nique are all freaks of nature with what they're able to do athletically. Then you add guys like DJ, Spree, Stack, and Nance, and it just gets scary for the opposing teams.
Shooting: having the best 3PT shooter ever is, well, a pretty nice start. Having a guy off the bench like Davis who was given the nickname "The Man with the Velvet Touch" doesn't hurt either. Starks was also a great shooter and Sprewell and Stackhouse could get hot at any moment too. Chris Bosh and Larry Nance have tremendous range for big men and are terrific floor spacers.
Post Play: having the most dominant big in this draft is another good start. Don't be mistaken, there isn't a single big on any of these rosters that can hang with the Big Fella. Kemp, Bosh, and Nance are all capable of getting theirs down low, but it won't matter as Shaq will get the lion's share of the minutes on the block.
Leadership: I've always been one who thinks this is the job of the PG. Luckily, I have three of the game's greatest leaders. Isiah commanded the Bad Boys to two titles, and led the team that gave Jordan the most problems... and will have no problem getting respect from Shaq. DJ was the enforcer that helped lead the Celtics to multiple titles... and will keep guys like Spre and Kemp under control and in the right mindset. Cheeks took the Sixers from a bunch of underachievers to a title winner... and will be the lead by example/good guy that keeps everybody happy.
These guys will simply refuse to lose the game. They have the perfect blend of attitude and teamwork to make winning a reality. Even against the great teams other guys have built.
