2013 World Baseball Classic

Post#1 » by LittleOzzy » Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:27 pm

Canada's first game in qualification is tomorrow! So weird that games are happening with the MLB season going on... Why didn't they plan qualification for last offseason? They have had years to plan this.

We are in a group with Great Brittan, Czech Republic, and Germany.

We lost to Italy or we would not have to qualify.

Blame Whitt for putting them in this spot (which is really just a crapshoot that I wouldn't be surprised if any of the four teams won). Why he didn't use his best pitcher (Scott Richmond) in the first two games of a double knockout format, I'll never know. My guess is he won't make that mistake again, but it cost them hugely.

It was the right decision. He did not know he would have to qualify this time and no one thought we would lose to Italy. We needed Richmond to have any chance against Venezuela anyways. I hope every future coach makes the exact same decision.

How many people remember anything about this tournament? We came in third place which is awesome but I was stunned at the amount of games teams had to play. Top teams had to play 15 games.

An update on the game from time to time would be awesome.

Work does not get Sportsnet One.

2-0 Canada in the after one.

Robinson should have been out at third but the third baseman did not tag him according to the umpire. Got a run on a wild pitch and then another one on a ground out to the SS. Only 1 hit and 1 walk so far.

Loewen grounded out.

Our defence is looking shaky. One bad throwing error already and one play where the third baseman dropped a grounder but it was called foul.

Strike out- throw out to end the top of the 2nd. Great Britain looks pretty bad at the plate and on the slide to 2nd.

The quality of baseball so far is worse than what I would expect in single A to be honest.

I can't believe it's that bad...

A lead in qualification should be better than that or they should not have expanded.

Great Britain is good defensively. I wish our defence gave me as much confidence as theirs.

A player already fell while swinging at a pitch. That sums up the game so far.

No, it was a horribly stupid and unjustifiable decision that did not make any sense. There is no good reason not to use your best pitcher in one of the first two games of a double knockout tourney and risk elimination like that. It's basic stuff. Considering he's started Shawn Hill today, it appears he's actually learned from that experience.

He did not know he would have to qualify this time and no one thought we would lose to Italy.

It's a single baseball game and the Italian team was full of professional baseball players (including several former and current MLBers). What happened was in no way surprising and Whitt was foolish for underrating his opponent.

Why did you respond to that? I already know your opinion and completely disagree.

Because your response was just as poor as Whitt's terrible, illogical decision.

Great Britain has not hit a ball out of the infield after 3 innings.
