Prokhorov: "Championship within 3 years"

Post#1 » by cs hauser » Fri Sep 21, 2012 11:49 pm

"It's easy to make a strong team, but it's very difficult to make a championship team. So we are on the right way and I'm expecting our championship within three years now," Prokhorov told reporters Friday morning.

Prokhorov confidently said he believes King will be "GM of the Year," and he doesn't care how much money he has to pay in luxury taxes.

Prokhorov plans on attending 25 percent of the team's regular-season games, and "now we can add the playoffs as well," he said, guaranteeing a 2013 appearance. He added that his ultimate goal is to "make a small dynasty team."

The Nets have averaged 25 wins per season over the past five years. This summer, Prokhorov spent $313 million in guaranteed contracts for 5 players. How far will these 5 players take the Nets?

No dynasty but remember, anything can happen. Who thought Miami would win in 06? Dallas in 11? NJ is a mid-tier playoff team but if they can get hot for one run they could win a chip. They definitely have a lot of talent.
Lets just say I wouldn't be shocked if they won a chip
But man, Prok is really financing a monster. 300 MILLION!?!?!?
Also King and Johnson are garbage, I'm sad that Prok doesn't see that.

he better look out, if you invest too much money and the team doesn't get it done, those contracts will be especially hard to move

just ask the knicks

Must be nice to have an owner who doesn't care about paying the luxury tax......

That figure doesn't even include the luxury tax, which will be substantial.

Prokhorov should've surrounded himself with intelligent basketball people before he broke the bank.

Do you know the difference between Mark Cuban and James Dolan? When Cuban bought the Mavs, he handed the keys to a 3-time Coach of the Year who had been voted one of the NBA's 10 Greatest Coaches of All Time. When Dolan took control of the Knicks, he handed the keys to.... Isiah Thomas.

When he acquired the team in 2010 (before the Nets got D-Will), he said that the Nets would win a championship within 5 years, so this is nothing new. He's just sticking to his guns.

The important thing to recognize is that he did not say that the Nets are a championship team now. We're just a playoff team and he knows that.

But I must say, these contracts do make it hard to foresee what kind of deals can be made in the future. Every time he's been interviewed, he says that his only goal is to win a championship and that he's willing to spend whatever to get there.

We'll see if BK can pull a move out of nowhere to actually launch the Nets into contention. Otherwise, he will have spent a lot of money for a team that isn't likely to bring home the banner, especially as currently composed.

If they dont win soon they will be stuck for awhile with JJ and Wallace getting older and more expensive.

First of all, Prokhorov is a billionaire. meaning he can count the number of billions of net worth or dollars literally. right? Which means, that paying any luxury tax imposed by the new cba, whether it will be a hundred million or 500 million, is peanuts to him. At the most, a 500 million lux tax is just a one-half billion dollars to him. Oh well? He's got like 9.5 billion more Im sure.

also, the Core Four?? an avid fisherman, a greatest batman fan ever, and a father of six? what was the other one? Stupid. Lame. They will be contending against the likes of Miami, Boston, Philly and New York for years. They are the most mediocre "Big - number" compilation for a team ever.

Under the old CBA, that kind of attitude would've worked. There was nothing to stop billionaires from buying their way out of salary cap trouble. That's what Mark Cuban had been doing for 10 years. But under the new CBA, that will no longer work.

Teams that are way over the luxury tax can't buy their way out of trouble anymore. Not only because of the huge luxury tax hike. But also because rules explicitly prevent those teams from improving. They can't receive players in a sign-n-trade anymore, which was (by far) the most important way luxury tax teams stayed competitive every year. They're not even allowed to sign players to a full MLE anymore.

There's virtually no way the Nets can upgrade the team, no matter how willing Prokhorov is to pay for it.

its going to be hard for that team to improve they have ZERO flexibility. The ceiling I see for this team is ECF and that is if they get favorable matchups.

My oh my Prokhorov is delusional. He is going to be in for a hard awakening when his team bows out in 2nd round for the next 3 seasons. And as mentioned above, that is with absolutely zero flexibility going forward.

They only need to contend for 4 years with this core. By then everyone is off the books except Dwill (1year left) and more than likely Brooks on a new contract.

At that point they could get young and trade Dwill for a couple 1sts and a young prospect and have nearly the full cap to spend, or go the boston route and bring back the vets on short low $$ deals and reload with younger talent and rebuild a couple years later.

I think they will be a top 4 team in the east (not hard to do) for then next 4 years barring and serious injuries.

They will make at least 1 ECF, and they have a shot to get hot at the right time and suprise a team if everything breaks right and get to the finals.

My predictions for next season:

MIA
BOS
CHI (half a season of rose is enough for the 3 seed)
BRK
IND
NYK
PHI
CLE

ECSF of MIA v BRK and BOS vs CHI.

The Atlanta Hawks made the playoffs five straight years with Joe Johnson as the teams best player. Feel free to elaborate on why you think the Nets won't make the playoffs or stop posting all together in this thread. Like "bertrob" pointed out, it appears that you're trolling, and your track record really does not help your cause. One screw up on this board and you're only going to have access to read the GB.

I'm no nets fan, but Lopez, Crash, Dwill played almost no time together on the court last season. Add in JJ and everyone healthy and you have a playoff team. They probably aren't contenders, but:

Dwill
JJ
Crash
Humphries
Lopez

With a guy like brooks as 6th man.

Thats a solid top 5 team in the east.

Not sure if they'll win a championship but I can see the Nets making it to the ECF within three years.
