this could probably go in the MKG thread but I think its a great example of Dunlap's coaching and interpersonal skills.

Though believing that former Kentucky standout Michael Kidd-Gilchrist needed to improve his perimeter shooting, first-year Charlotte Bobcats Coach Mike Dunlap waited for the right moment to broach the subject.

That moment came as Dunlap watched Kidd-Gilchrist's frustration rise as he missed shots more often than the other players in an informal shootaround.

"I went to him when no one was around and I said, 'Can we get this thing to where you want it?'"

Kidd-Gilchrist eagerly accepted the offer. "God, coach, let's do it," he said.

I'm getting a boner thinking about the fact that the season's only a month away. I don't care if we win 30 or 13 games this season, I'm just glad we have a competent coach and players who care and are motivated despite all the sh*t that went down last year.

He won't solidify his legacy with Charlotte, though. The best he'll do is like Reggie Theus coaching the Kings to roughly the ninth seed in 2008.

Wow. Why be a Bobcats fan if you don't believe a good coach can win here?

Good news from camp today:

Mike Dunlap is intense.
And that's one reason why Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan, who knows a thing or two about intensity, hired him as his coach. Now Dunlap gets to leave his stamp on a team that finished with an NBA-worst 7-59 record and lost its final 23 games last season.
With Jordan watching from the bleachers at UNC-Asheville's Kimmel Arena, Dunlap ran his team through its first training camp practice Tuesday. Players said practice was swift, the intensity omnipresent.
Guard Gerald Henderson said Dunlap had already set the tone in June when he walked on the floor as the Bobcats' coach for the team's first voluntary workout.
"Coach is an intense, high-energy kind of guy,'' Henderson said. "We've been working out a lot this summer and our workouts have been high intensity, quick and very hard. That's how he likes things. That's how we're going to improve.''

Mike Dunlap

Post#427 » by anchorman123 » Thu Nov 15, 2012 11:09 am

I was wandering what you all thought of Mike Dunlap as a coach?

I'm from Australia and I remember him coaching the NBL for the Adelaide 36ers in the mid 90s . I was pretty young but I remember him doing pretty well. He didn't win a championship but I think they came close during his tenure as a coach. I remember thinking he was pretty good and quite well respected as a coach at the time.

I'm a Warriors follower because I follow Bogut so I don't see much Bobcats but am curious about how an ex-NBL coach is going in the NBA.

it's hard to imagine things going better than they are right now with dunlap, even though the team exceeding expectations this season does not necessarily put the bobcats in the best position going forward.

i have to admit, i don't love him volunteering the "hope the barking about long practices stops now" quip after the game. maybe it'll be nothing, but maybe it's a coach feeling his oats a little bit.

Mike Dunlap coaching is a breath of fresh air with a purifyer compared to last season's Paul Silas. I like the fact that it seem like he encourage the best out of all of his players without doubting their abilities. In other words, he's not over the hill and bitter. At least not just yet. And for those who critiqued Dunlap's clichè "attack-attack" approach upon first being hired up until preseason, he has the Bobcats looking like a high-powered offense despite not having a superstar on the roster

Dunlap is like Larry Brown brought into the modern era. I like him. Our defense is rated awfully right now, might be worst in the league but we have a top 10 offense. Its definitely not what any of us expected. I think he's already made good adjustments to the zone that was hurting us and the only thing left thats holding us back is the defensive personnel. Mainly Byron Mullens alone holds us back from being a good defense. 1 more piece there and we could easily shoot up to decent there statistically

This. We are actually fun to watch now and I think our offensive style really suits the strengths of our guards.

That doesn't sound like Larry Brown at all. Brown would have us be the worst offense in the league but a top 10 defense,

That's the Paul Silas effect. The next coach automatically looks godly in comparison.

Eh... I think he's better than the rest of the NBA thinks (many thought he was a joke signing) but he's no savant either. The only reason Washington and Minnesota didn't nuke us from orbit is because they simply do not have the 3pt shooters to exploit us like every other team has. However, at the same he's been able to get a huge turnaround out of Byron Mullens which is an achievement in itself. The fact that he's able to get even 90 pts out of the personnel here is an accomplishment as well.

He will have his growing pains just like the young players on this team will, but so far he's made it obvious that he is definitely not some chump off the street like some thought.

Comparing him to Pop will only end in shattered expectations... but for now, he's doing well. With time, the zone should tighten up a bit as he and the players get familiar with each other.

I forgot about this.

Does anyone else think he was talking about TT and was pointing out that its not a coincidence that he is playing the best basketball that he has played for over a year?? #workharder

all of our players are doing better than last year's team, imo
