Also stupid, considering the Angels have actually won more games. Trout's also faced significantly better pitching more often.

I also don't bring this up to dump on Cabrera. But the gap between him and Trout this year is so big that I don't see any argument for him as MVP. Like twirly said, any other year, sure.

Ben Sheets makes it all the way back to the big leagues only to announce that he's retiring after the season?

It seems that he won't be on the playoff roster for the Braves meaning he will finish his career without ever throwing a pitch in the postseason.

No. No, not really. 44 home runs, 139 RBI. If no one was on base for any of his home runs, 32% of his RBI would be solely him.

I'm kind of amazed so many people here are defending RBI as a stat. Its been shown over and over to be a terrible stat. Miggy actually had a negative "clutch" rating which means he was slightly worse when men WERE on base.

Last I checked Miggy came to the plate with ~425 men on base over the season, while Trout had ~285. So you are literally giving Miggy the MVP because the guys in front of him got on.

There was not a single month since Trout was called up that Miggy had a better WAR than he did.

Here is a good article by Nate Silver on the AL MVP.

Braun comes up 2nd in the MVP, on all 32 ballots, no lower than 4th. Writers didn't screw him. Bodes well for future consideration.

Cabrera wins AL MVP.

Commence ignorant freakouts.

I'm totally fine with Cabrera winning it...but...ignorant?

Probably the incorrect term.

I don't think a good argument can be made for Cabrera, but I'm also not outraged. It takes a while for antiquated views to go away, but it'll happen eventually.

Glad Braun got some kind of recognition for a fantastic season.

Yeah, I am fine with Cabrera winning it, but I'm not sure why somebody who respects or tries to craft statistics to quantify just how bad Miguel Cabrera is at defense instead of counting an arbitrary amount of times that he got close to, but screwed up a play (errors) would be arguing on the basis of ignorance. That and RBIs/batting average are not great stats.

Toronto signs Melky Cabrera for 2 years $16 mil. They are looking quite nice.

"Ignorant" refers to the old school baseball writer dopes that are now attacking the new school baseball bloggers who love advanced stats.

"Ignorant" refers to the new school baseball bloggers who love advanced stats screaming at the top of their lungs that the old school baseball writer dopes got it wrong.

"Ignorant" refers to everyone making an argument about this. This year, more than any other year, whoever you thought was worthy of winning this...you're right.

Gonna disagree, just because Trout should have been an old school guy as well. His traditional numbers (avg, runs, stolen bases, home runs) were outstanding as well. If you voted for Cabrera, what you said was defense and base-running didn't matter. And for that you're an idiot.
