Problem with this Pic is Jerry is wearing hard bottom shoes which adds to your height more than sneakers. If you believe Kobe is only 6'3 (which he isnt) then wade is like 6'1

West himself had said he was slightly over 6'4 barefoot, while Kobe has said his wife measured him at just under 6'5 barefoot (6'4 3/4).

One more thing - John Starks being listed at 6'5" was a joke. It's clear that most players have embellished heights but come on...

You know pretty much every player drafted since 91 has their barefoot heights listed including 7'1" barefoot shaq. Just check here, i'm dumbfounded about how it seems so few people know this.

Are you going by Draftexpress? Because they have a bit of a disclaimer on that

Measurements prior to 2000 are based on newspaper articles rather than official league documents. While the measurements reported in such articles are reported to be officially from the predraft camp, we are taking those writers at their word and can not completely verify that information.

Just scroll all the way down to the bottom of their database and it's there. There is still plenty room left for speculation.

i also went to some arena football league tryouts, and they were alot more concern about being accurate, they listed me at 5'9.25

Add a inch and a half with shoes and round up. Most times they do that. Most 7+ footers are listed without sneakers though (Yao, Shaq, Bol, Bradley, etc).

This is indeed true but i doubt these newspaper articles are pulling numbers from their ass. Most of them list the height to the decimal point. I can see reason for people affiliated with teams to fudge numbers but not reporters reporting from draft-camp. I mean we might as well not believe any news coming from reporters at that point.

Frankly it is by far the best we have going on as opposed to trying to compare random photos and analyze the angles etc. and as you can see there has been little reason to cast doubt on shaq's pre-draft listing.

Everyone remembers Fat Shaq more than Fit Shaq, but this picture does really suggest that Wilt could muscle with Shaq with both in their best conditions.

Still, I guess Fat Shaq was pretty damned hard to move.

Actually I'm more impressed of Wilt in that pic. Look at the guy at an older age, he was huge, just as big as shaq, and he is bending his knee, you can tell he is clearly taller than Shaq

Huh? His knee is bent because he's up on his toe. His other leg is completely straight.

Wow I feel sorry for Hakeem's wife! I mean that's hard to not notice! Like that scene of Latrell Spencer (Terry Crew) at the beach! Mandingo!

Let's start comparing bulges instead of heights, I'm pretty sure it's never been done before on RealGM....

Shaq's hand length is impressive. Shaq is not only thick but extremely long. Look his fingers are more than an inch longer than Hakeem's. Looks like Shaq could palm Hakeem's head like a softball as well. I can't imagine his ex's claiming Shaq came up short in the dong department. Just extremely hard to believe.

TrueLAFan

The thing is, a decision was made to exaggerate height in the early 80s. It's why Hakeem and Sampson were the "Twin Towers"...a pair of seven footers. Except Hakeem was never close to 7 feet...not unless he had heels on. Like a lot of great Cs, he measured somewhere between 6'9" and 6'10" in his socks. He's in good company there...with guys like Ewing and Reed and Russell and Zo. But the NBA wanted the illusion that players were bigger than they were--and if you weren't paying attention (like, say, Silver Bullet), you bought into it...even though it was well known that players were measured in socks or barefoot until the mid-70s, and past players cared so little about their listed height/weight that, sometime,s they are laughably off. Guys like Clyde Lovelette and Walt Bellamy and Willis Reed and Wayne Embry had weights that, by the end of their careers, were as much as 50 or 60 pounds off. I've got a copy of a magazine that lists Kareem at 235 in 1979. He's often listed between 225 (his weight at the beginning of his senior year at UCLA) and 235 (his weight when he was drafted) In 1980 he actually got on a scale...and came it at 267 pounds. He has said that by the end of his career he was near 300. But you can still find a ton of places that list him between 225-235.

You know why? Because Kareem doesn't care. He realizes that a player's listed weight or height is pretty much irrelevant. What matters is the quality of the player. We often miss the big picture that Kareem can see. Let's say that all the old measurements are dead on correct, and that Willis Reed and Zelmo Beaty were only 6'9", and Nate Thurmond and Walt Bellamy were only 6'11" or so. that bob Lanier weighed 245 to 250 pounds. Do they become lesser? Only if you're ignorant enough to judge a player by an inch of height. Hakeem's height slowly dropped...from 7' to 6'11" to, in many places, 6'10" now. Hakeem, in shoes, is between 6'10" and 6'11"...probably a bit closer to 6'11". He didn't have a problem with getting "shorter." Same with Ewing...I was proud when he copped to being between 6'9" and 6'10". Like he said, "But I'm a bad 6'9"!" I always felt it was sad that Ben Wallace felt he had to be listed at 6'9" when, effectively, everyone in the universe knew he was a good 2 inches shorter than that. If you're paying even the slightest attention, you're aware that modern players very often overstate their heights. As thought it makes a difference in player quality. Sad
"A particular shot or way of moving the ball can be a player's personal signature, but efficiency of performance is what wins the game for the team."
- Pat Riley
