God he looked terrible. Anyone remotely competent would have destroyed him.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
I mean the dude is in his 40s, and from my understanding has never had a combat sports background, right? Brock, for all the flack he caught, was a all american wrestler. This guy was just a pro wrestler.
And as goldchain stated, those guys are athletes. But honestly, a freak athlete does not a fighter make (hell, look at every nba fight ever). There really isn't any reason to have expected Batista to do any better than say...Jose Canseco.
Maybe I'm wrong and he did have some wrestling at some point or something, but I think I read otherwise.

Really? I thought he did OK. His boxing looked fine. He punching on the ground was vicious.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Both of those guys would have knocked Bautista's head about 30 rows into the crowd based on his "I'll just block these with my face" approach.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
I'm not sure if that takes away from my point. HW mma sucks to the point that two top fifteenish hws in the biggest platform in the world resembled two jabba the hutts rolling around on the floor together. What were people expecting out of an old man with no combat experience in his first fight with a promotion that I've never even heard of? I'm surprised he beat a guy with so much experience, tbh. People asking Dana questions about Batista's ufc prospects...smh.
edit: I should clarify to say that hw mma has looked good the last few events, I'm speaking more to the depth of the division. The top is good at this point.

Oh yeah I get what you mean, but despite their awful appearance they're both pretty high quality fighters. I think with the heavyweights unless the weight limit is lowered you're always gonna have these highly skilled fatties running around because they don't need to watch their weight. Pretty much everyone over 250 not named Overeem or Lesnar looks like they're one McDonalds fuelled training camp away from looking like Roy Nelson.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
My point is more about lack of skill than appearance, despite making jokes about their flab. Hell Roy Nelson for example is a skilled bjj black belt under Renzo Gracie who has defeated the likes of Frank Mir in grappling. But the only reason we are calling guys like Hunt, etc "high quality fighters" is because of how much HW sucks. I mean he's a 38 year old fighter with a .500 record and a lot of people were pushing for him to get a title shot at hw before Mir got it. That wouldn't even be close to considered in any other division in the sport.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
I don't think it's fair to say Hunt lacks skill though, his striking is better than 90% of the HW division it's just the rest of his game that lets him down. There's a billion jiu jitsu specialists who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag that are still considered high quality fighters, he's just on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Plus it's not like other divisions haven't had completely one dimensional guys high up in the rankings, Paul Daley was one win away from a title shot at one point. The whole Hunt for title shot thing was just a stupid internet fad because of a horror run of injuries to other contenders but it shouldn't be counted against him or the division imo.

This is exactly what I keep coming back to. Its all relative to the big fellas.

I wasn't trying to deride striking skills vs grappling, sorry it came off that way. Hunt is of course a good standup guy.

You can find one dimensional guys who have been close to shots, you can find old men who have, but how many old, one dimensional, .500 fighters have been close to shots? I don't want to make it sound like I'm hating on Hunt here, honestly I root hard for him every single fight, he was just randomly an example I chose. I mean its nothing against heavyweights, even if you put aside the out of shapeness, there are just naturally going to be a ton more dudes in the world who weigh 170 pounds who are athletic and can fight than 260 pounders. That'll always be the case.
Good point about it the title talk being mostly an internet thing, but to be fair it wasn't like the preteens from sherdog just ran with it. There were people from a lot of boards going for it as well as the media. Hell I think a few guys here may have even been touting it a little.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
I would've loved to have seen it in all honesty just for entertainment value, if anyone could pull out a flash knockout against a champion who seems to stand 99.9% of the time it'd be Hunt. It'd be a good story if not cheapen the whole division to a degree. Though I don't think that's exclusive to the heavyweight division, we just saw a (more lauded but equally outmatched) middleweight nearly submit the LHW champ a few weeks ago.

I just realized that in Undisputed 3, if you have a fighter who can do the Jon Jones kick to the knee, you can win on the hardest level by just spamming that move. I just beat Jon Jones with Anderson Silva by simply kicking his knee over and over again. TKO by leg-kick.
Unfortunately, in create a fighter move, none of the camps teach that move.

Re: Non-threadworthy MMA Rumors/Quotes/Tweets, etc.
Please let it fold.
That said, there will always be another strikeforce. The Kevin Randleman and Scott Smiths of the next generation need a place to fight when they can't cut it in the ufc anymore (aka old guys whose names are bigger than their skills). Additionally, some malcontents will sign as well, guys like Brett Rogers. Add a couple of random prospects/maybe a Gracie or two, and the ufc will be buying out another promotion. Neverending cycle.
