King Felix
I was pondering here on what AA should be doing during the winter meetings, when something struck me as quite obvious. There is only one thing he should be doing there. Trying to acquire Felix Hernadez.
He is EXACTLY the pitcher that any club needs. I would throw our top 1-3 prospects and mid range roster player for this guy. He is the best in the game right now and is in his prime. Since money shouldn't be a factor, I would go all out for him.
Imagine:
Hernandez
Morrow
Romero
Haren (FA)
Laffey/Alvarez/Villaneueva
Pretty potent IMO

I'm sure the Mariners aren't going to give away one of the best pitchers in baseball in his prime. Not sure anyone is going to pry him away right now.

Re: King Felix
A struggling franchise with the best pitcher in the game vs a struggling franchise with a bunch of highly touted and ready to contribute prospects.
Which one would you chose?
I think we went down that road with Roy some years ago. One pitcher can't help the team win 5 of 5 games. But 4 players can.
Just something to consider as we move forward.

Re: King Felix
He's my, and probably 99% of baseball fans, first choice as a pitching acquisition as the only top 5 guy who is even remotely targetable. I'd say what is almost certainly going to happen is that he gets traded a year from now (with one-year on his deal instead of two) to an LA or NY team (with a few darkhorses of which TOR is not one) and re-ups for an absurd bailout-sized vault of money.
If you want to go all out and risk losing him in two years anyway, TOR's only shot is probably this offseason and if you want an estimate on the cost, it's likely at least Lawrie, D'Arnaud, Sanchez, and Syndergaard to make SEA pull the trigger early.
It's a nice pipedream and if it happened it'd be insanely fun to be a Jays fan, but I won't be holding my breath.

Lawrie, d'Arnaud, Sanchez and Syndergaard???????
Ya maybe if he had 4 years left on his contract, not two.
Theres no way they could get a package of that sorts from any team.

Re: King Felix
I'm not saying we'll offer that, but I'm saying that's what it'd take to make them move this offseason, I guess it's possible you could replace 1 guy with a second tier type but I'll stick by that as most likely. Obviously disagreement is expected and we can't know any better unless he's dealt. My main point is it's not going to happen.

With 2 years left they'd do well to get Lawrie and d'Arnaud and I wouldnt even do that.

Ya lets dump the farm for a guy who almost certainly bolts in 2 years to the Yankees,Dodgers or Red Sox.

Re: King Felix
No way I trade for Felix at this point
The asking price would be outrageous and I would rather hold onto to those young assets and gamble that Hernandez hits the open market when his contract is up
You're going to have to pay him a ton of money in 2 years anyways -- just around the time our young, affordable talent will be ready to compete

Ricky Ro
Alvarez
Drabek
Cecil
Rasmus
Aaron Cibia
Lind
Yunel
For King Felix
Gose replaces Rasmus, Hech replaces Yunel, D'Arnaud replaces Cibia, Randys favorite player replaces Lind. Rotation looks like this:
King Felix
Morrow
Marcum (FA)
Hutch
Happ

Only way you'd be able to get him at a reasonable price is if you take on Figgins as well. Even then the package coming back will need to be a big one.

Re: King Felix
We would lose all the prospects that AA has spent years gathering, all in one deal. No thanks, it would take way to much.

Re: King Felix
Actually we won't lose all the prospects that AA has gathered over the years. In fact if we give up 3 top notch prospects while we give Fleix the extension that he wants, we will have another dominant pitcher in our org for years!
Trade upon the condition that he signs an extension (6-7 yrs at 20$Mil per)

Re: King Felix
And how do you suggest we get him?
We overvalue our prospects too much and I doubt Seattle trades him for something similar to what we got for Halladay who was happy to leave anyways.

Who is we? AA has traded lots of prospects already so you can't mean him.
- Stewart
- Molina
- Chavez
- Musgrove
- Comer
- Wojciechowski
- Rollins
- Perez
He most likely would have traded a top propect for Pineda if they had asked for anyone but Lawrie as well.

Ok then tell me why early last season why we didn't trade for Gio Gonzalez even though we were really interested in him? He's a front-runner for NL Cy Young and we missed out by not trading our prospects?
two reasons a) They didn't want our prospects as they are not good , or b) We overvalued our prospects and did not give up enough that Oakland wanted.

Re: King Felix
The Nats gave up a huge haul. Losing out to them is nothing to be ashamed about. It is extremely difficult to put that kind of package together.
The fact is it is true that our best prospects are also our youngest so they do not have as much value as the ones close to the majors. Trading your super young prospects are also how you end up trading players like Michael Young away because you think you have a player closer to the league.

Re: King Felix
I'd offer;
Rasmus, Escobar, D'Arnaud, Syndergaard, Norris, McGuire, and Thon Jr
for
Hernandez, Saunders, and Franklin.
