Re: The OFFICIAL Rookie impressions thread
Jonas Valanciunas may not be flashy but this guy is so fundamentally sound, makes a very high percentage of his shots. Can't foul him too because he can actually shoot free throws at a consistent rate. Great defensive presence as well. The future looks bright for him.

Re: The OFFICIAL Rookie impressions thread
Valanciunas looks like a real big man. Plays defense, grabs rebounds, and shows a lot of potential as an offensive player. I love Biyombo but if big Val keeps this up I have to say that Val was perhaps the right pick all along.

I dont think there is any question, Jonas V was definately a better selection than Bismack Biyombo. Biyombo will be out of the league soon but Jonas can be a good center, he makes a difference defensively, he's not a good rebounder and looks awkward in the post, but his offense can come along in time. I think he's going to be good.

This rookie class overall has been great so far especially in the PF/C category. Talking about AD, Valanciunas, Drummond, Meyers Leonard, Ezeli and Sullinger to name a few.

He definitely is a good rebounder and that will only improve as he adds more strength. He rushed a bit in the post today, attempted a quick turnaround when he usually would drop step for the dunk, but he redeemed himself by swishing another and with that clutch sky hook.
I just don't see how he could be anything less than a top 10 starting C in his prime considering his physical tools, touch and most importantly that motor - you either have that or you don't. None of his FT makes touched the rim either, he's going to be a solid mid range shooter during his career.
Too bad we didn't have a chance to see Drummond vs. Jonas, it's an interesting contrast in style.

I don't agree that Biyombo will be out of the league, but I definitely underestimated Jonas' understanding of the game + offensive skillset. I can see why San Antonio desperately wanted this guy. He sort of reminds me of Tim Duncan with his fundamentals. Before anyone gets worked up over that statement I was comparing the fact that both players have an old school flair to them, obviously Duncan was the far superior player.

Re: The OFFICIAL Rookie impressions thread
I went through this thread and saw no mention of Robinson. So, here goes:
Stats: 12 points (4-9 from the field), 4-5 FTs, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 29 minutes
The upside is that he maintained decent production and energy and was efficient from the line, and was effective on defense. The downside was a lack of touches in a team-high of 29 minutes (though that came off the bench), and his low FG% which will not aid the Kings woes.
My impression of Robinson is that he is going to be a much more impressive defender than people give him credit for. He doesn't put up block numbers like Anthony Davis, but his energy and speed are a deadly combination. And he did not seem like an undersized PF at all, though to honest that probably will only come up against guys like Bosh, Garnett, and Dirk.
One thing that really impressed me was his speed. He is amazing and seems to be going faster than any other player on the court at all times. I can recall two plays that awed me. One was a defensive play against Marshall were his lateral speed came into play and he just beat Marshall to the spot and completely sealed him off. On another play, he passed ahead to Jimmer who immediately shot, and Robinson was the first down the court to get the rebound.
On the other hand, his offensive game is not varied enough. He, like so many rookies before him, settles to much for the mid-range shot. I think his main offensive role as a rookie will be cleanup, though he will get on ESPN for posterizing someone. His biggest problem is his energy; he isn't very patient with the ball and often goes too fast.
So, to sum it up:
The Good:
Very good energy
Ball-Hawk
SPEED!
Didn't look undersized at all
Defensive Pressure
Looked good from the line
The Bad:
Settles for jumpers (he will be an offensive project)
Goes too fast on offense
Still needs to adjust to his roles (focus on defense and rebounding for now)
Tries to do too much
My guess is that he sees considerable minutes this season, but will have a low usage rate as long as Cousins and Evans are on the team. That will hurt his production, which I'm guessing will be around a double-double (9-14 PPG, 9-11 RPG). As the season goes on, he will get a reputation for playing hard-nosed, high energy defense. I think he will be able to guard 3 positions (large SGs, SFs, and PFs), though I'd hesitate before putting him on a center. Offensively, he should not be played as a SF because that will expose his flaws in the mid-range and try to make him create more off the dribble.
And yes, this draft is awesome, though I think that is due more to the lockout than anything else.

Ya he needs to find himself as a PF and not try to be tweener. If he becomes a double double machine with an occasional jumpshot then he is star material. Seriously this rookie class is great.

McGee is just so entertaining to watch. He either looks like a bumbling idiot or is dunking on your entire team.

He still considered a rookie after how many years in the league?

It's amazing how people can believe a random internet rumor with 0 meat to it, just so long as they want to believe it. There wasn't even a guy that posted San Antonio wanted Valanciunas. Someone "leaked" that the Spurs were interested in Parker for #5 (something I have a hard time believing), that's all there was - and then the internet tweeter was speculated maybe they wanted Valanciunas with the Spurs Euro history.
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change
