Spurs Preseason

Post#1 » by Black_Jack21 » Sun Oct 7, 2012 11:57 am

Thought I might start this to go over some of the preseason games.

Spurs got up in their first game 106-77

Minutes were spread fairly evenly
Ginobili, Blair, and Joseph were the spurs in double figures

Curry got 9 mins, 7 point and 2 rebounds along with 2 fouls and turnovers

Nice game, all players getting a run

Didn't get to watch the preseason game, but I believe we have 14 players under contract.

The front runner seems to be Josh Powell for that 15th roster spot. Honestly, I'm hoping Eddy Curry pans out because God knows this team needs bigs and has a lack of post up scorers. Josh Powell has had a better camp, but he's a 6'9'' PF.

But at the same time, I don't believe the Spurs will even try to utilize Curry's inside game. You saw it in the scrimmage, they didn't even post him up one time. Only used him on pick and rolls and he struggled with that.

The Spurs' offense is heavy on pick and rolls. And I really doubt they're gonna start running plays for the 15th guy on the roster. So in that sense, I think Powell will win the job because Powell is the better "Roleplayer".

I've always liked Powell and I hope he sticks but I really doubt we even carry a 15th man.

I'm more interested in seeing Nando in the preseason. I've taken an initiative to watch him this summer in that one game where I said Leo Westermann stood out and the Olympic games. Honestly, I didn't see all this crap about him being an amazing passer and a poor Manu bull.

Hopefully, Nando can take advantage of Mills' absence and show us something. Or Joseph, but I really don't see anything special from Joseph yet.

I am liking what I see from De Colo. With his scrappy plays, he does remind me a lot of Manu Ginobili. His defense still needs work but he has potential to take over the off guard position in the future.

Damn, I bought league pass but the game wasn't shown. I saw the highlights, Nando for the game winner. Had one nifty pass too. That was it. This was probably the game I wish I could see. Nando has 9 assists. and then Curry had a good statistical night with 10 points and 8 boards. And then Josh Powell also is putting up good stats. Has the highest plus on the team and was 6 of 7 from the field.

Great game, spurs rest the big 3.

Curry and Powell had good showings, Blair was really active for the 9 mins or so he played.

De colo with 9 assists and a game winner.

Derrick brown also had a nice stat stuffing game as well.

Lots of spurs showing good form in the preseason

Fell short against Denver.

Brown and curry had a decent showing.
Timmy had a great game.
Still a nice spread of minutes, lots of players getting some burn in the preseason.

What the hell man.. 3 preseason games and only the Spurs games haven't been televised yet. I'm still waiting for my first time to catch a glimpse of the team this year.

But anyways, it's starting to look like that Eddy Curry is the leader for the 15th roster spot.

Wiltherspoon getting the start. Not showing anything yet. Seems like he's got good length but isn't making much of an impact on the floor with his play. Got a couple of open corner threes that he missed. This might be his last chance to really impress the coaching staff. We got Curry, Powell, Brown, and witherspoon. Witherspoon is the one most likely to get cut next.

Eddy Curry is just too good offensively not to win the roster spot. Defensively, he sucks. He's letting Asik get deep position to score. He was late on help defense. He didn't box out Asik for a rebound after free throw shot. But on offense, he's sealing guys to get deep position. He looks smooth on post ups. He knows how to use his size in the paint. That's just something we don't have from our bigs rotation. What Josh Powell brings (defense, energy) we already have in several players like Splitter and Blair.

Gonna take back what I said about Witherspoon. He's getting on a groove. Playing solid defense, starts making shots, being all over the floor, hustling. Has a team high 15 points right now.

I hope that Wesley finally puts it all together and catches on with the Spurs. Tons of physical talent but the most frustratingly consistently inconsistent four year college player I've ever seen at Memphis. World beater one night and falls off the world the next. That said, lack of maturity (both on and off the court) was his weakness in college - if he ever overcomes that, watch out.

Yeah, saw a lot of good things from this game.

Blair has a new shot. And I really mean he shoots it differently than last year. He has a higher release on his shot. He shot the ball 3 times, once from about 20 feet, and he hit both of his free throws. The shot just really look better than last year. He's also skinnier than last year. Problem is, I don't think this Diaw-Blair lineup works. They need to have either Splitter, Duncan, or even Eddy Curry as the center.

Nando looks better in the NBA game than FIBA. He hasn't been turnover prone like I thought he was and yeah, he's making Manu-like passes. But with that said, Gary Neal and Danny Green are still better players right now. I just can't see Nando cracking the rotation. Gary is the best scorer. Green is the best defender. Nando is sort of that guy who does everything well but not well enough.

Eddy Curry looks great. I'm gonna go out and say that Eddy is clearly the best low post scorer on this team. He got 3 post up opportunities and he capitalize on it. He knows how to operate down there. Defensively, he sucks real bad, but atleast he's not afraid to give hard fouls.

Cory Joseph also looks really good. Runs the team better but I still can't see him cracking the rotation.

Gary Neal clearly plays better as a SG. He plays best when he's alongside Cory or Nando, but he's still our best option as the backup PG. I never really like Neal's shot selection though. He takes very questionable shots sometimes that sometimes makes me scratch my head. Strangely, he has a knack for making those crazy shots. It's when he misses them that makes me feel like he thinks he's Jordan.

This might actually be the year Bonner gets the least minutes among all of our bigs. Blair, Splitter, and Diaw looks too good right now. Plus, Bonner isn't making his shots in this game so he looks rather awful.

Josh Powell didn't play. I'm guessing he's gonna get cut next. Witherspoon played very well, but it's really starting to look like Curry has won the spot.

Really wouldnt mind if that's the case.
He seemed to have a knack for scoring down low before disappeared from the NBA rotation.
With Duncan getting less burn, diaw and bonner being shooters and splitter and Blair so so scorers, curry could turn into a player who can give us 10 mins or so and give us a semi legit option to go inside a few times a night and keep the floor balanced.

Kinda hard to see Eddy actually cracking the rotation though. His defense is worse than Bonner's. Bonner is just as good shooting the ball as Eddy is in the paint. Thing is, Bonner's shooting helps the offense all the time. Eddy's offense shows only when the team is giving him touches. We have so many scorers on this team that it's just extremely unlikely that Eddy gets an offense run through him unless it's a 40 point blowout.

Also Eddy doesn't fit well alongside Duncan or Splitter. If Eddy wants to get minutes, he better hope one of them is injured. Even then, I think Pop likes Bonner too much to not play him. It'll take a Diaw-Blair, Bonner-Diaw, or Bonner-Blair lineup to really fail and upset Pop before I see Eddy there as the Center.

But still, I'm rooting for Eddy to make the team. Just not expecting him to actually contribute anything once the games count.

Spurs waive curry.
Which is disappointing.

I wonder if he was a handful during preseason because i really thought the form he showed was good enough to be an option on the end of the bench.

Josh Powell still on the roster as well as Witherspoon.

Wonder if his form will be good enough to get a gig at another team.

Yeah, that was disappointing. I mean, of the 4 guys (brown, curry, witherspoon, powell), I thought Curry and Powell played the best. Right now, I'm guessing we either not carry a 15th guy, or Powell wins it. I believe we're like a few dollars away from the tax so we might not give that spot to anyone.

Eddy has definitely made me a fan. I really hope he latched on with someone and get some minutes there. I wouldn't say that before he got here.
