OT: Metamoris Pro BJJ Super Event

Post#1 » by REDDzone » Wed Sep 12, 2012 1:58 am

I thought I'd try this in its own thread. Things have been kind of slow lately on this board, since there haven't been any ufc events lately. Maybe people would be interested in this that wouldn't otherwise hear about it. The last time this superfights concept was received really well, although I suspect that that was in large part due to the presence of Nick Diaz. That said, this is honestly more relevant in the bjj landscape, I'd think. Plus the submission only concept is different. Anyway, takes place on 10-14-12.

The Card:
-Roger Gracie vs. Marcus "Buchecha" Almeida
-Ryron Gracie vs. Andre Galvão
-Kron Gracie vs. Otavio Sousa
-Kayron Gracie vs. Rafael Lovato Jr.
-Jeff Glover vs. Caio Terra
-Dean Lister vs. Kevin Casey
-Jean Jacques Machado vs. Nelson Monteiro

Some background: Roger has been sort of out of the bjj scene lately due to mma focus, but this is the best match he could possibly come back to. Buchecha won the absolute at World's this year.

Galvao needs no introduction, and this generally wouldn't be considered the most competitive of matches, but the submission only aspect should make it more interesting. The Gracies are always going on about finishing vs pointfighting, etc. Will be interesting to see if Ryron can defend well against Galvao's attack.

Kron is Rickson's son (the 2 year old arm barrer in Choke, lol) and a great player in his own right (although not a ton of major titles at black belt yet, still young), and Sousa is a world's champ this year. Also interesting to me because Sousa just had a match with my coach last month.

Glover/Terra rematch, first was awesome. Youtube it.

The rest, big names, others may be more familiar with these guys than I am. Here are some vids:

Wow, that's great thanks for posting. I don't train, nor do I hunt for additional events, so i'm very much out of the loop when it comes to things outside of the main MMA orgs.

How do you like training thus far? I'm actually going to Comprido's tonight for the first time in a year.

Ahh addicted still. I do 3 times a week every week since mid May. Have been frustrated lately, hoping to snap out of it this week.

Did you move from Comprido's? Or did you just take a training hiatus? I know guys from my gym have been coming down there once a month now.

I was there on Monday and I saw Tom there. But yeah, I'm taking a break for school. It's just too hard to keep on top of both. I'm glad you like it at Scott's. He really is one of the nicest guys I've ever met.

I owe you one for that. The research I had done was kind of steering me in a different direction. I was sort of nervous about the whole thing and another school in the area seemed more "casual" to me. Your words about Scott changed my mind. And I couldn't be more happy with my choice.

Tom is a beast by the way. Still don't understand how a relatively small dude can feel like he weighs 250 pounds. :)

I think its just good natured ribbing implying that I spend my time with any brown belt knee on belly, north-south, etc. (true).

Or maybe he's genuinely curious. ;)

Dean Lister vs. Kevin Casey

Looks like Casey is out of this fight, to be replaced by Xanda Ribeiro. I don't know much about Casey, but people seem to be much much more excited for the new matchup.

Xande runs a major BJJ school out of LA, has for years and years. With his brother, Saulo. Sort of a psycho from what I remember.

I didn't ever hear that he was psycho, but I know I was reading some website that was arguing that he is the greatest competitor of all time in terms of achievements, medals, etc.

I think he's getting a little over the hill nowadays though.

I thought Xande's gym in LA was fairly new(within the last 1-2 years)? I know Saulo's gym, University of Jiu Jitsu in SD is pretty huge though and has been around for a long time. Xande has tons of medals from mundials, ADCC, and grapplers quest. He's regarded as one of the top grapplers of the past decade.

Well, this event ended up running more than an hour behind, and the early production had issues, so I ended up skipping out on paying for it. Didn't want to risk coughing up the dough to watch a lag or something the whole time. Kind of regret it now because the event got literally universal acclaim as far as twitter/playbyplays/reviews/forums.

I think all of them are on youtube or the site to watch now though. Def going to hit them up.
