I think people are viewing the article through their own mindset.

I didn't see that article as either negative, positive or particularly newsworthy.

As for why he might be ahead of Booker, well it might have to do with the fact
that he actually has the requisite size to play the position he is projected to
play. I like Book as much as the next guy, but he is a PF with the length of a SF.
If not for that, he'd be more widely viewed as a stud as opposed to an average
role player.

edit - by ahead of Booker, I really meant to say 'considered to have more upside.'

Are we reading the same article?

I didn't think the article was particularly negative. It pointed out most of Vesely's shortcomings of last year and attempted to explain them (injuries, lockout, adjusting to the NBA, etc.). This is stuff we already knew. The new information in the article was about how Vesely has improved his shot and how he is realizing how he must adapt his game to the NBA. I didn't get a vibe that management was down on Vesely or that Vesely had one foot out the door on his way back to Europe.

I wrote that the article was kind of a downer which is accurate because it reports some hard truths.

“If he doesn’t play with his energy, enthusiasm — all those things that go into his game — he’s not effective,” Wittman said. “He’s not a guy that we throw the ball to on the low box to play off of. He’s got to create those things and when he’s just going through it.”

Very negative tone to the article. Recounted Vesely's achilles injury, his hip problem last season, that Vesely felt they let him play more with his body in Europe; and Coach Wittman talked about situations where Vesely was ineffective.

Damn! I thought my posts here were negative. :(

That kid should want to go back to Europe. Wittman knows what his veteran players can do. Same old stupid Wizards stuff IMO. The new guys haven't proved crap, but because they are veterans they are ahead in the pecking order. Vesely will be the catch hell guy, just like the previously departed young players, who were "knuckleheads" before they left.

I see things develop really early. I am sure others will say I am wrong, like they usually do. This IS negative. Vesely iS NOT a shooter or a scorer. Like Wittman said in the article, Jan makes things happen with his energy. I am afraid, however, Jan is going to be ostracized or treated harshly for what he can't do. Him being white and European will also cause him to get yelled at more, similar to how Jeremy Lin catches a lot of heat for his every mistake.

Hope not, but I see this becoming a story. Eventually, if the Wizards stink, Jan is going to want to go back to Europe, if he already doesn't. Adding veterans (both Okafor and Ariza will figure into the F rotation--and Jan will never play SF on this team as configured) will cut his minutes a lot. Chris Singleton played a lot of PF against Charlotte, and that could figure to cut Jan's minutes. I don't see Vesely improving under these conditions as much as I see him bailing on the Wizards.

Yet Kevin can take the heat and he is black.

I heard nothing at all negative in the article.

Ves has a lot of improving to do. Not really worried about him short term. He signed through 2014/15
For now he fills a need as a back up PF/C or a starter with the right players if he continues to improve.

Whitman is doing well to tell him to take the shot. That is how you get comfortable on the court. He has decent form that will get better in time. Mostly his problem in mental. Shooting will get him used to shooting.

Its up to Jan to get better. Nothing to see here. Moving along.

To reiterate, there is a lot happening. There are physically less minutes due to more bodies being on the roster. Okafor has been added and he will play a lot of minutes. Booker, presumably will play and be healthy. Nene is projected to start. Seraphin has emerged as a player who will play minutes at C. Even Chris Singleton might play some PF.

Vesely is being told he needs to improve, but there will not be the same minutes. At the same time expectations will be for Jan to improve.
The Wizards shoukd have drafted Derik Queen

So the Wizards have other options then to solely rely on a second year project pick coming into his second year after a first year experience that consisted of... coming to a new country where he didn't speak the language, no summer camp, no summer league, and a strike shortened season of which he started late because of a hip injury. Given all of that, Ves showed market improvement over the year and he got physically stronger as the year went on. His rebounding improved. He just had zero outside shot. Really no different then Booker his first year.

Hey, Kevin didn't look so great after his first year. He couldn't even stay on the court do to foul trouble. He also didn't speak the English language. He was lost on defense. Even in his second year he didn't look great. Then all the sudden, Randy took over as coach and Kevin took a leap as his game came together.

Now Kevin is in his third year. There are still questions about him but most here have a better feel for what he can do so it is easier to project him improving. Specially since he has a post and mid range offensive game. He needs to keep improving. He needs to keep learning. But he is a kid that welcomes learning from more experience people regarding the areas he needs to improve on. He is only 22. He still has lots to learn. Ves is also only 22 also but he has a year less experience.

If the Wizards have viable vet starters, that's good. That means they can win now. It also means there are players to teach these younger player. Kevin or Ves don't need to be ready to start this year. They would need to be ready next year or the year after. And if they want to start, they need to earn it by being better then other options. We want this because ultimately, they need to be better then other teams starting options. That start by proving they are better then our existing vets.

By comparison. McGee is into his second NBA contract making 10M and up over the next four years and he is still coming off the bench and he has 4 NBA seasons under his belt. I would be more critical of McGee. He should be ready to start at this stage. Specially given his age and what he is making.

The Wizards have 5 front court players and 96 min to give them. If you just divide by 5 that's 19 mins each. That's the base line if they are all healthy and all playing well. Given that injuries happen, there are match ups, players get hot, some games are blow out one way or the other, and its a long season so you want your vets fresh going into the playoffs... I think Randy can work it out. Specially given they need to keep Nene, Okafor and Booker healthy. I think its going to take all 5 of them to get it done this year. Specially considering Nene is starting the year with a feet that needs to heal and Booker already has a hammy issue.

to me jan vesely is a dissapointment offensively. infact he scores so little i wouldn't be surprised if he's not played much. I think this year he can improve defensively and rebounding..but i wonder what position he's going to play..unless he becomes a shawn marion or kirilenko. dude needs to put up more points ( he's a sixth pick) and i don't consider him a cornerstone in the franchise. he's smart so i hope he gets it together but he needs to be more aggresive offensively and less defensively

+1 Bruce. The truth about Jan Vesely is that he is limited to scoring points on dunks and uncontested lay-ups ONLY. That is his game. As someone else wrote, it's not his fault he was selected 6th.

Ted should get a clue about his FO team. The fact that they were "unanimous" in their desire to draft Vesely tells me that the staff is probably afraid to go against the wishes of the Ernest one. With any group of people you are going to have some divergence of opinion, even more-so in that draft.

Jan will have better games, but it will be fools gold.

I know I'm going to get a lot of heat for this i would rather trade Jan then Trevor booker i believe Trevor Booker is way more productive then Jan and will continue to be.

I don't think you'll get much heat for that proposal. Vesely might net us a 2nd round pick with his skill-set.

How about we wait until we get to see what he does this year.

The kid has had all of one partial year with no summer camp. After all, the kid was drafted knowing he was more of a project then a ready to be a star starter.

He wasn't the pick I wanted either. I wanted to trade down. But they did pick him and they are going to do the common sense thing which is evaluate his progress this year before deciding to ship him off. The kid did show good focus, effort and yes.. skills. They just weren't offensive skills.

Ves with something that looks like a mid range shot will be a vastly different Ves. I also expect he will slash to the basket more this year as well. I expect to see some measurable progress from Ves this year. People need to chill. lol They finally have some front court depth. Ves will be fine.

Trading Ves now for a second round pick would show insanely poor judgement.

Trading JV now would be silly, that I agree with. He has an oppertunity to really shine this year, if he's willing to put in the work, which I think he is. If Ariza is as crap as he was in the preseason game all year, then Jan can slip right into starting SF no problem.

i post a lot using my cellphone and sometimes post don't get through but i've tried severally in the last few weeks and porbably in the past to say i love enes kanter as a player. he's going to get cousins type numbers with better percentages. kid will be an all star one day..and it pissed me off when ted was brushing off the possibility of drafting him by asking have you watched him play? well utah gm went to watch him practice or teach in college. that kid now has the nba body and will bully. he i loved much more than jonas and jan and thought was the second best or best prospect out there

IIRC The Jazz wanted either Mcgee + the 6th or the 6th and this years pick (Beal). Im a big Kanter fan but that would have been a terrible trade.

If you were wondering whether Wall could make his teammates better, look no further than Vesely. Without Wall's speed he doesn't remotely belong in the league.

Another EG Euro bust.

How was veseley a lottery pick let alone a first round pick? I was hoping to see some semblance of improvement in his game, but watching the nets game, he was a nonfactor. He shot looks just as bad as last year. Unbelievable!

Spot-on, JV has totally been exposed when there are no fast-break easy dunks to be had. Perhaps he will be teammates with Pecherov in the future. Until then, John will set Ves up when he gets back.

yeah, he was bad. can that dude shoot? i know hes a nice athlete, but, man, not much skill there. and he was kind of hacking on d. im sure his hustle game will look much better with better players around him.

on the other hand, beal is **** nice. DAT J. that's a nice piece with wall right there... his assists are about to sky rocket hitting beal off screens.

I really don't think Ves is a terrible shooter - I think he's incurably hesitant. He doesn't want to shoot. He doesn't want to score. He doesn't want the ball in his hands.

I don't think he's ever had those qualities and it may be hard to break him of it.

I bet, dollars to doughnuts, that in the gym alone, he hits plenty of the shots he's missing (wide-open) now.
