So Warren Moon comes out in defense of Cam Newton, feeling as though the criticism Cam is receiving from his unfortunate press conference last weekend is racially based.
In the article, Moon talks about comparison's Newton is receiving to Vince Young, due to this idea of a "sophmore slump" and that the comparison is racially based. He also cites Jay Cutler as an example of a white player, who he feels is not receiving the same degree of grief that Newton has been.
I thought that Newton came across very poorly is his press conference last weekend, that type of behavior is best suited for when you are away from the press. He appeared to be defeated and displayed little, to no leadership, much of it being body language based.
To compare Cam to Vince Young is foolish in my opinion. Cam had a much better rookie season than Vince in terms of numbers and has thus far showed a level of intelligence far above what Young had displayed. I cannot really buy the Cutler comparison either, because Cam has not yet lashed out at his team during the game, or shown himself to be gutless in key moments.
It is obvious that Moon dealt with much racial bias during his lifetime and playing career which is unfortunate. But to place that burden upon today's players seems off-base. Cam is being taken to task because of his actions and performance, not because of his race.
Jason Whitlock wrote an interesting piece related to this topic earlier and brought up several good points as well. For me, I struggle with Whitlock, he can be very intelligent and thoughtful with some of his columns. Other times Whitlock strikes me as a lazy hack who points out the obvious and blurts out sensational nonsense just to be controversial

Curious what everyones thoughts on this are, I have found it interesting to track the past few days. If this belongs in the ATL thread and gets locked, I will know to put it there for future reference.

Moon obviously doesn't remember the NFC Championship game Cutler was in. Or when he was yelling at Webb during the Packers game this year.

Re: OT - Warren Moon & Cam Newton
Newton was also the #1 overall pick. Both Cutler and Newton are petulant brats and are equally recognized as such. There may be some race stuff going on w/ Cam but it's not this imo.

I think its stupid to compare Newton to Young. Young atleast won alot of games.

I agree that Whitlock IMO has written some really great and thought provoking articles over the years, but then he can also write some crappy over the top attention seeking pieces. What he wrote about though on Newton and black quarterbacks in general was something i generally agree with.
A lot of people in the media and some fans right away go about grouping guys like Young, Vick, Newton, and now RG3 together and then trying to judge where they are similar or different from a variety of angles. Granted, i do think those four guys simply do have a different style of play and skillsets compared to most white QB's, and thus there are times where it's reasonable to compare them vs each other, but i agree with Whitlock that the comparisons are also used sometimes mainly based on race instead of a more fitting context.

Re: OT - Warren Moon & Cam Newton
Moon was a tremendous QB that couldn't break into the league for YEARS because of racial bias. I feel for him. But he has pulled the race card WAAaaaay too many times in recent years. Cam has been playing like ****. Its inarguable. Three weeks ago he had a run to get a 1st down that would run out the clock and beat the undefeated Falcons. Instead, he fumbled it and while Carolina recovered they punted and ended up losing the game. The following week they had a chance to win in the last minute and Cam had an open receiver in the end zone to win the game and threw what looked like a bounce pass. They lost again. He had a bye week and came back to have the embarrassment of this past Sunday. He never lost in HS, Comm College, or the only season he played in college when he had one of the best collegiate seasons ever at Auburn. But he is a worse QB today than he was week 1 of his rookie season. And thats not the kind of improvement you are looking for in a #1 pick.

Not to mention he (Cam) is getting zero help from that high priced running attack that Carolina invested in.

Yeah, they made the right move firing that GM, but no good GM would want to work for Richardson.

Maybe I am imagining things, which is highly possible, but wasn't Jerry Richardson involved in some type of controversey a few years back?
