Grant Hill and Chauncey Billups Health Updates (Merged)

Post#1 » by mkwest » Wed Oct 24, 2012 1:01 am

Veterans Lamar Odom and Grant Hill did not practice Tuesday and according to Head Coach Vinny Del Negro, the reserve duo will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis as to their playing status.

“[Lamar] and Grant have some bone bruises [in their knees],” Del Negro said prior to Monday’s game with the Golden State Warriors. “Grant’s is probably a little worse than Lamar’s but everyone handles those things a little bit differently, your body responds differently. They’re doing all the things that don’t have anything to do with pounding; the ellipticals, the pool, all the conditioning things they can.”

After the Clippers finished their hour-and-a-half-long workout at their Playa Vista training facility, Del Negro spent several minutes answering questions about Hill and Odom’s injury situations. “They had their MRIs. They had their medical exams,” he said. “They see the doctors, trainers, they still have their workouts. I expect Lamar to be back sooner than Grant.

“There’s a chance [they could be back by opening night],” Del Negro said. “I don’t know. It’s on a day-to-day basis how they feel and when they practice. I mean, they have to get some practice time in, so we’ll see who’s available probably Monday or Tuesday’s practice and then go from there.”

“Having depth is a positive thing for us, no question about it and we’re going to use that to our advantage,” Del Negro said.

Forward Blake Griffin agreed, saying, getting assimilated with new players on the roster is made easier because the team is dealing with veterans. “Most of the guys have practiced. Lamar was out there for a while and once his knees are feeling better [he’ll be back]. Grant we want him to take his time and really feel healthy and not to rush anything. It’s tough to say how everything is going to work out when we have all these guys, but I’d rather have it that way than the other way around.”

Both are at risk of missing the season opener. Odom will probably return before Hill. Thankfully we have some depth. We'll be without Billups, Odom and Hill for a little while, but still have enough to get by. Barnes has been playing great and will have the opportunity to see more time with Hill's injury. At least one of Turiaf/Hollins will need to step up in place of Odom.

sucks Grant is already injured.

phoenix training staff???? :o

but Lamar is just beyond bothersome.
came into camp out of shape...ill assume the knee injuries are a byproduct (sp?) of that....i don't see where he can use get into the usual flow of things.
I see injuries...knee pain/sweeling, hammies here/there etc. etc. in his future.

hil, odom AND trey with bone bruise? i smell coverup. vinny and the FO probably just wants to see what other bench guys can do since we are too deep to give any non starters significant minutes to evaluate. it seems very convenient to have two proven vets out with a young fella with a guaranteed contract.
on the other hand, leslie has proven nothing to me he is worthy of a roster spot other than 250,000 reasons DTS has on him.
ehhhhh f it.

I don't know about cover up. It would make sense to get Odom out on the floor if he can play, as well as Hill. I mean Turiaf, Hollins, Barnes are also all vets, and they are being played.

Also, if they were just covering up, why wouldn't they have them go all out in practice also? Really not necessary to do, and no one is made about getting less minutes in pre-season so that guys trying out can play.

This sucks bad we need one of them to fit in with the bench. Turiaf and Hollins works if we want to grind out a lead but if we are trying to maintain one or get ahead we need that third option off the bench if Vinny goes full bench like he loves to do. After Bled and JCrossover we have a slight threat in Barnes but he is better fitted as the glue guy the compliments the 3 options with Hill or Odom

I think Vinny should try to not go full bench too much if possible.

Bledsoe
Crawford
Barnes
Turiaf
Hollins

Isn't too bad, only thing I would be worried about is turnovers

it bothers me also. if he would have come into camp prepared and ready to train, more than likely he would not already be injured. unless he gets himself back in shape and snaps out of this funk, I also see lots of injuries in his future.

Vinny expects Billups to return before Hill does.

There's no timetable on Hill's return. Hmmm...

Chauncey Billups hopes to be back 'in a month'

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers guard Chauncey Billups anticipates he will still be out a month and doesn't think he will be back on the court in November.

"Barring any setbacks, I'm hoping in a month I'll be back out there," Billups said while on ESPN's NBA Countdown on Wednesday. "I'm back practicing with the team so everything is looking good."

If everything goes according to plan, Billups will make his return to the starting lineup sometime in early December before the Clippers go on a four-game road trip on Dec. 11.

"Once I went down, everyone was counting me out because of my age and the stage in my career but that fire doesn’t just go away," Billups said. "I'm looking forward to getting back out there and helping my team out."

We will most definitely need Bigshot for that 4-game roadie.

Great news!

Chauncey not rushing
The return date of Chauncey Billups from his torn Achilles' tendon remains a mystery.

"Barring any setbacks, I'm hoping in a month I'll be back out there," said Billups on ESPN's Countdown.

Billups is currently playing in practice at game speed and without soreness.

"It's been nothing in my Achilles'. My Achilles' is great. It's strong, powerful," Billups said. "It's recalibrating the rest of my body, getting it up to speed, telling it 'It's time to go.'"

Billups is being careful to avoid any setbacks.

"I could turn it on for a week or so and, boom, have to shut it down for a few days. I don't want to do that," he said. "I don't want to play two games and sit two games. I want to be back playing and be part of that team everyday."

Chauncey Billups expected to practice Tuesday
Chauncey Billups (Achilles) is expected to practice with his teammates on Tuesday.
"He'll be ready when he says he's ready to go," Vinny Del Negro said. Billups has been targeting a December return, so it makes sense that he'd be eyeing a return to practice right around now. Although it sounds like he's closer to returning, Billups still isn't worth a roster stash in standard formats.

Good thing bout Chauncey returning. In games like Hornets he should help focus us before games and to give the 100% effort EVERY game.

Chauncey Billups has been scrimmaging at full speed with the Clippers and is expected to return sooner than later for the Clippers.

He's also expected to take over for Willie Green as the team's starting shooting guard once he's back. Sixth man Jamal Crawford has cooled off lately and Billups reportedly looks good in practice, so picking him up if you have a player you want to drop makes sense. Just keep in mind that he's 36 years old and coming off a very tough injury. As for Crawford, we'll just have to wait and see what kind of impact Billups has on him, but it could be a negative one if Billups comes as advertised

Honestly, for his role, Green's 12.5 points / 2.7 rebounds / 2.1 assists / 1.3 turnovers per 36 minutes, and his 47.9% FG / 44.1% 3PT / .588 TS% has been pretty good. No one was expecting any more from him, actually exceeded my expectations in terms of shooting percentages and efficiency.

Crawford has certainly cooled down, and part of the problem is that his means of isolation has its limits. He can keep being highly productive if some plays to get him open shots are mixed in with the isolation.
