Scouts at a loss to figure out Heat

MIAMI -- There were an unusually large number of scouts tracking the Heat during the latter stages of the preseason. Perhaps it was because of the lack of opportunity to scout in China. Perhaps it was because of Erik Spoelstra spending so much time talking about redefining his approach this coming season.

And yet, when it comes to answers, no one claims to be a quick study now that Chris Bosh is the Heat's full-time center, Ray Allen is the sixth man and LeBron James is setting up in the post as often as he is facing up on the perimeter.

This past week, several NBA scouts were asked what appeared on the surface to be a simple question:

"In your view, what is the best way to try to stop the Heat this season?"

One scout hardly broke stride on the way to the court by answering, "If I had an answer, I'd be telling my team, not you . . . and I don't."

Two others, however, were willing to offer what hardly came off as trade secrets, with one of the veteran Eastern Conference scouts pointing to offensive efficiency as the key and another from the conference pointing squarely at James...
