Gentrifiers on the DC streets seeking out attention as usual

Post#1 » by Wes_Tiny_Abe_ » Tue Oct 30, 2012 9:17 am

Typical gentrifier seeking out attention towards himself. He couldnt keep his mask inside until halloween he just had to bring it out early.

"HEY EVERYBODY!"
"LOOK AT ME!"
"LOOK AT ME!"
"LOOK AT ME!"
"I'M URBAN" "I'M URBAN"
"I'M A WASHINGTONIAN NOW"

You see back home on the suburban cul-de-sac he was raised on nobody would have given a rats ass about him running down the street in the cold with his shirt off with a mask on.

But now he is URBAN.
He pays inflated rents and the streets have become his playground.
Its all about him now.
The streets are his stage and they are also his audience.

"LOOK AT ME!"
"LOOK AT ME!"
"LOOK AT ME!"

When he goes back home to his condo he will immediately log on to Facebook and tell all his friends back home how he was running down the URBAN streets of DC with a mask on. Then he will tell them he was on the news. Then he will tell them he is on YouTube etc... etc... etc...

Its all about seeking out attention towards themselves.
Growing up, I attended private schools all over the area with a lot of these kinds of types.
Trust me, I know them all too well.

Wes: Don't blame it all on the private school kids. There are young gentrifiers in the public schools too. But how did you manage to stay pure after being raised in a yuppie household and attending private school?

Amen.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

Actually I kinda agree with this, and wasn't in the least bit shocked this became some sort of internet fad within hours of it happening. It is what it is. The area as a whole takes something as meaningless as this and blows it up to make it seem cooler than it is. In the end, who cares?

Well, I think we can all agree to dislike people who think they're more clever than they are but what I disagree with is to pin this behavior entirely on transplants.

I don't even care about such behavior, and if it's transplants doing it, I can guess where it might come from. You're young, you've moved to a new city for college or work, you're trying to make it, despite the ridiculous rents and overpriced drinks. You're looking for friends, and old timers are so cliquish, so you hang mostly with other recent transplants, and you do silly stuff, in search of fun and group and individual identity. Some of this seems pretty stupid, but it also seems pretty harmless. It doesn't bother me near as much as people defecating in the alley behind my house or tossing used condoms in my driveway, which is, of course, totally old school DC.

I do kind of miss some of the colorful old time homeless people, like Sky King, or that one homeless guy with all the ties who never stood still, or the guy that stood on NY Ave by Brentwood, holding a stick and welcoming people to Washington. He looked kind of like Ed Bradley, and I saw him once at an art opening, enjoying wine and cheese, and his unintelligible conversation fit right in with the art talk.

Well if I had to pinpoint an exact event then it would have to be the year one of my parents lost their job and for the first time in my life I had to attend a public school. It was only for 1 year but in that 1 year I learned a hell of a lot both inside and outside of the classsroom. Now I do not want to bring race into this but the majority of the students at the public school did not look like me. The entire school was the same race except for me and a handful of teachers. My friends attending the private schools would constantly tease me about getting robbed, stabbed and shot but the reality is it never happened. I never encountered any problems. The way my friends looked down on others just for attending public schools was troubling and disturbing.

Yes I am familiar with the story.

The gentrifiers probably overpaid for theirs just like they overpay for everything else.

But it is transplants.

Do you want for me to give you an example?

Who do you think started it?

DC Natives who have been riding the trains for most if not all of our lives?

Well they are responsible for the metrorail fares being raised every single year for the past few years.
It now costs $14 for an all day metrorail pass.
I would rather risk jumping the gate (even at the stations my childhood friends are now the station managers at) than pay those ridiculous fares.

Let's not go down that road Tontoz; slurs to a minimum and directed at Jordan Crawford whenever possible if you wouldn't mind.

What does the past have to do with any of this?

You are the one stuck in the past with your skinny pants, retro replica 80s/90s Air Jordans, replica 80s/90s snapback hats and your garbage wanna-be 80s, 80s ripoff electro music.

On top of all that you are a Wizards fan.

What does the past have to do with it? Everything because you can't let go of it. Over time cities change, suburbs change, people change, technologies change. Get over it.

FYI i have never lived in DC and don't own any retro anything.

I think the vid is HILARIOUS!

People who don't take life too seriously are wonderful.
I've been taught all my life to value service to the weak and powerless.

Why in the hell do you keep bringing up the past?

What in the hell does the past have to do with any of this?

All I did was point out there were no ridiculous transplant attention seeking events up until the last few years.
