Re: The OFFICIAL Rookie impressions thread
I really have a hard time seeing Valanciunas having a shot at ROY.
There are some really good rookies out there, that are being given free reign to put up great raw stats. And, raw stats is what ROY awards are all about. Val is on a team with some pretty good offensive players, which renders him probably the 4th option. Also, there's 4 bigs on the Raptors that deserve minues, and Bargs will probably get 36mpg. So that leaves 60mpg too be split between Jonas, Ed Davis, and Amir Johnson. I really have a tough time seeing Johnson, and Davis each getting <15mpg so that Val can have 30+mpg, and I really can't fathom a player winning ROY with <30mpg.
For Val to even enter the ROY discussion I think he would he would have to produce at the very top end of expectations for him, and probably have Bargnani go down with injury to free up some minutes. So basically a very very remote chance

Yeah Davis is probably averaging something like 12-10 with 2 blocks.
Val doesn't have a shot at matching that.

I mean, as a Blazer fan I think Lillard will be in the conversation, simply because he is one of the most NBA ready players. However, I still say Davis is the favorite because of the many ways he can impact the game.
Simply put, anyone thinking critically and being intellectually honest, will admit that the award is still Davis's to lose. Maybe one of these other candidates will surprise, but that requires knowing what will happen before it happens.
Well, I'm a Bobcat's fan but I think Beal has a great shot b/c of 2 reasons: 1. He should have ample opportunity to score and offense usually wins awards.
2. He might play a relevant role on an improved Wizards team that could sneak into the playoffs in the weak East. Davis is good but there is no way NO sniff the playoffs in the West as things are now.
How was that for critical thinking or thoughtful judgment?
I mean, ROY can be a crap shoot anyway, never know when a darkhorse might blow up. Drummond could do nothing but get more highlight dunks than everyone else and accrue Blake Griffin hype.

Hm... Sounds a lot like my reasoning for why Lillard is going to be in the conversation.
I guess what I am trying to differentiate between is being in the conversation and being favored to win it. At this point, Davis is still the favorite. Simply put, it is still his to lose, and preseason didn't change that - Davis is still the man to beat.
If Beal wants to win it, if Lillard wants to win it, if JV or Drummond want to win it - they have to compare well against Davis, and will have to all season long. Maybe the conversation would be different if Davis struggled in preseason, but with numbers as strong as anyone, if they were to choose ROY now, objectively it should be his.

The vast majority of ROY awards go to players that score a lot of points, preferably 20+. Davis won't do that. Lillard will. Therefore Lillard is probably ahead of Davis. If Lillard doesn't get it, then other bigs may have good enough numbers to steal it from Davis.

Yup. Don't take them too seriously. I imagine quite a few of these people were comparing Bargnani to Dirk when he entered the league. Overhyping Raptors players seems common with some.

What other bigs? The ROY should come down to between him, Lillard and Beal. There aren't any bigs in this or last year's draft that can challenge Davis as far as freedom and raw talent are concerned.
Davis should score 15 PPG a night comfortably, IMO. He runs the floor like a guard and has stellar handles for a guy of his size, which a lot of his critics don't yet realize or underestimate. If NO goes into a running game, watch him fly. I can very realistically see Davis having a 16/9/2 type of year with solid defense.

OT - Quick observation; Anthony has a very tiny head for his body. I think his growth spurt came so rapid, his head couldn't catch up with it. Every time I see him on the floor I can't help but think of Goomba from that awful Mario Brothers movie. Not a whole lot to do with his game but I just had to point that out.

Re: The OFFICIAL Rookie impressions thread
Its preseason and everyone is blowing up JV and Drummond. There is no defense and every proven player in the league doesn't care or try. I wouldnt be surprised if they both are great rookies but... difference makers is something almost impossible to predict at this point in the year.
Talk rookie impressions a few weeks into the regular season. Its funny alot of the younger posters think preseason means anything.
Far more comes out of the practices and time off between the last preseason game and first game(when the starters really start to get in shape)

He got 24 in his last game (which I viewed) and didn't look like he forced anything or was singled out for special plays. Even though he's not a great shooter, Davis is one of those players who can score from all over the court. If Gordon does not come back soon (or at all), Davis could end up averaging close to 20 ppg. Simply because other than Davis, Gordon, and Anderson, NO doesnt have a lot of weapons. And Davis will get a lot minutes.

He's a better athlete than both Gasols, but has a less developed offensive game. He'll eventually be a better defensive player than Marc and probably Pau as well. I doubt he'll get to Pau's or even Marc's offensive abilities, but he'll score more points inside than Marc and be more efficient because he's also a good foul shooter. But his overall game on defense and offense might make him more valuable than both in the long run.

Jonas is better athlete, rebounder, shotblocker, ft shooter, has better touch, plays with more energy than Marc but is worser passer . You add that he great at pnr and it is crazy how much potential there is for this guy.

Maybe not freedom, but your wayyy off if you think jv and dre dont have the raw talent to match. If drummond was able to start from day 1,I could easily see him having as much chance at roy as davis.

That's what these forums are for. A large part of sports is speculating on who's going to do what. He's not as good or better than the Gasols right now, but he does have the potential.
