I have no hope that this team will make any big free agent splashes this off season. I'll believe it when it happens.

The nice thing is that they can have a fairly narrow focus this off season. The trades that were made this year shored up the bullpen and while another big bat is always welcome the offense is strong enough (when healthy) that the focus can be mainly on getting a couple starting pitchers via free agency and trades.

While Gose probably didn't do enough to get penciled in as a for sure rotation player next year its quiet likely that Hech did.

Get a couple top end pitchers stay healthy and we can be very competitive next season.

Updated with the 95 million budget that Shi Davidi is floating out there.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/2012/10/30/davidi_jays_offseason_anthopoulos_ready_to_gamble/

If Rogers is opening up the budget modestly to 95 million, we have to realize that 18 million in FA money, while somewhat significant, isn't going to get us 2 very good starters in free agency.

It may get us 1 good starter plus fill in the holes around the team.

So get ready for
Romero, Morrow, Alvarez, Happ & a FA starter next year.

I don't think Oliver is going to retire, so we'll have less to work with (If Davidi's $95M guess is right)... Really no excuses as to why this team can't have a $100M+ payroll heading into 2013.

That's a rotation that won't get us very far unless MLB somehow finds a clause that will void Verlander's contract and Verlander is promised a free lifetime cable and cell phone package with Rogers to go along with a 17 million dollar contract. They better throw in a free PVR just to play it safe.

With all the money that Rogers is reaping off the Jays (and with the Canadian dollar doing so well), there's been no excuse not to have a $120M+ payroll and there hasn't been for a long time now.

With the Rajai Davis re-signing for 2.5 million and picking up Oliver's option for 3 million we're now at 81.1 million estimated for next year, since a roster spot for a min contract guy falls off.

Also, shouldn't payroll estimates include injured pitchers we're paying even if they aren't on the 40-man roster? Because that may not matter to fans but it will to Rogers.

You have to pay to play. We need to invest. I think we need to avoid BJ Ryan and AJ Burnett type deals and we should be alright I think those two deals kind of scared us to spend for a few years. Rightfully so.

Updated

C Arencibia, J.P. 0.5
1B Encarnacion, Edwin 8
2B Escobar, Yunel 5
SS Hechavarria, Adeiny 2.75
3B Lawrie, Brett 0.5
LF ---
CF Rasmus, Colby 4.5
RF Bautista, Jose 14
DH Lind, Adam 5.15
C2 Mathis, Jeff 1.5
MI ---
CI ---
OF Davis, Rajai 3

SP Morrow, Brandon 8
SP Romero, Ricky 7.75
SP Happ, J.A. 3.8
SP Alvarez, Henderson 0.5
SP ---

RP Janssen, Casey 2.9
RP Santos, Sergio 2.75
LRP Oliver, Darren 3
RP Delabar, Steve 0.5
RP Lincoln, Brad 0.5
LRP Loup, Aaron 0.5
RP Rogers, Esmil 0.5

TM Total 75.6

So figure 3-4m max for the bench spots and there's two spots to fill, maybe only one if you put Gose in LF, but I think you're gonna see a LH bat in there. Oliver is included until he says otherwise (I would've thought if his mind was totally made up we'd know already). I also think the mlbtr arb estimates on Happ and Rasmus are going to be a smidge high, but not enough to alter them for now.

Updated with today's signings. We're at a minimum 81.3 million for the 25 man roster, even though we only really have 23 guys who could legitimately make it, including Gose and Hech.

I have Hech starting still, but that's really TBD.

The Blue Jays now have $77.1 million committed to 16 players for 2013 if you include $3 million for Oliver, who may retire, and projected salaries of $4.5 million for Colby Rasmus and $3.8 million for J.A. Happ, both arbitration eligible.

Factor in roughly $5 million for contract renewals on 0-3 service time players and Anthopoulos still has roughly $8 million to spend on a $90 million payroll, $13 million on a $95 million payroll and $18 million on a $100 million payroll.

8 mill is not going to get a nice starting pitcher via the free agent route. Lets hope the max is around 95 million.

Which is probably why you're hearing things from AA about getting creative. Rogers has really set expectations that payroll will be 90 something million next year and I believe them. So what can we get with another approximately 15 million?

We may be having to settle with Alvarez and Happy in the rotation next year to fill a SP spot and a LF spot. Or maybe we let Gose and Sierra battle it out for the LF spot.

opportunities can be expanded with some creative contract structuring when you consider that all 30 teams will be getting an additional $25 million in national TV rights money starting in 2014 (roughly double the current total), and that the Blue Jays have only $48.5 million committed to eight players that year, $36.5 million committed to four players in 2015, and no guaranteed money on the books for 2016.

Back-loaded deals anyone? Anthopoulos didn't shoot down the notion Wednesday, saying it "can certainly be done."
