20/20 hindsight, but gotta ask

Post#1 » by 8305 » Sat Nov 3, 2012 2:17 am

As I watch Gerald Green appear overwhelmed by the speed of the game and look like he's never been asked to make a pass in his life I've gotta ask. How in the world did we see Gerald Green a better free agent option than Courtney Lee? I think they signed for about the same money and Lee is the far more proven commodity while being a local guy.

I know it's early but wow, I'm trying to think of the last time I've seen a Pacer look this overwhelmed.

Saw an SI article where a scout was quoted saying Green is too sloppy with the ball. That looks like an understatement. He doesn't appear to fit in the rotation let alone the starting lineup.

I guess. I like Courtney Lee, but i just don't know if his style really is what was needed for the Pacers. They needed someone who can drive in, create fouls, get to the line and create shots/chances on his own, which is what i felt was a big flaw last season. Lee is a shooter. Green, in theory, should have no problems driving in. That said, Green hasn't been doing that and when he does get to the line, he misses. All while being a turnover machine. So, after two games, I have no argument for him.

Although, Lee didn't look too hot tonight either in Boston's home opener vs. Milwaukee. And turned the ball over quite a bit too.

When Lee has a bad game it's much easier for Boston to call it an anomoly. He's proven he can play. What's tough about Green is that his stretch of good play is so short relative the time when he played badly it's hard to know which guy to whom we committed 3 million a year?

I wonder if moving him to the second unit will allow him to play more aggressively? Clearly the guy is a terrible passer and that's a bad trait for your fifth option (which is what he is with the starters). With the second unit he can just look to score and worry less about shot selection. I sure hope he's not as bad as he looks now.

Well, we took a chance with him rather than looking to a proven player such as Lee. But keep in mind, we still have 80 games to go, and a lot of things can happen in that time period. Honestly, I don't think he fits well with the starters, and I'd bet he'll start to look better when he's more of a top option for the bench players.

Because we already had Stephenson and Johnson, we needed someone to play sg/sf and that is something Lee can not do.

Also, Green looked pretty good tonight I think this thread was a little premature.

I like Gerald from the perspective he replaced DJones salary slot on the wing.

Let the man get comfortable. Before it's all said and done he'll be looked upon as a fortuitous bargain.

Needs to put more mustard on his passes though.

Yeah, I think it's too early to assess Green's future with the team and how he will fit in. We got him to be a part of our second unit and I think he fits better being a reliever.

But on the other hand, i kinda worry too with Granger not having a timetable for his return. Meaning we could and probably would see Green starting a lot of games.

Another "too early" type post, but the one player I do miss from last season is Dahntay Jones. Mike Wells recently tweeted the Pacers prided themselves last season as a "smash mouth" team, and keep getting outplayed this season. Jones i thought always brought energy, and nobody ever worked harder then him.

Tomorrow we play a real good team and on the road. If the Pacers turn the ball over at the rate they have been, or miss free throws constantly, they will be blown out of the building early. It's their first real test of the season so hopefully we learn a bit more about our team tomorrow night.
