The Thunder had a rare practice following a back-to-back today. It was a light session that included a film session on the Cavs in preparation for Sunday’s game. The theme today was defending the Cavs’ pick-and-roll.
Kendrick Perkins: “It kind of had me scared today in the film room the way the coaches were. I thought we were playing the damn Dream Team tomorrow.”


Perkins went on to say the Cavs “are the best pick-and-roll team in the league.” “You’ve got (Dion) Waiters and you got (Kyrie) Irving who can come off and pull up at the 3 at any time,” Perkins said. “I think Irving’s shooting 46 percent. Waiters is shooting 52 percent from the 3, and they both can split the pick-and-roll, get in the paint and cause havoc. So it’s a lot on the bigs. And you’ve got Varejao who’s going to set good screens. So it’s a good challenge for us.”

Scott Brooks also had high praise for the Irving-Waiters tandem. “They’re 20 years old and they’re doing things that most 20 year olds are not able to do,” Brooks said. “They read the game. They see the game at a very good pace. Their pick-and-roll game is some of the best in basketball, and they shoot the ball very well. Both guys are big time NBA 3-point shooters.”

Don't think we'd give up PJIII and we don't need another expiring SG. I think a more likely trade would be Perkins and Lamb for Varejao and a first round pick with some type of protection.

Someone else suggested a trade to start with, but I'm not sure what player they wanted the most. Either way there's no chance of use giving up PJIII or taking another expiring.

The reason why you guys getting Gibson makes sense is for two reasons. First of all, he has tons of playoff experience and has ice water in his veins when you need him to hit a big three. More importantly though, is you guys get an expiring contract, which despite what you said, you dont have any other good sized ones aside from Martin. For a team that has been so openly concerned about their salary situation, I would think getting another expiring would make sense.

I personally think the most logical trade is this:

Varejao
Gibson

for

Perkins
PJ3
Tor pick

Perkins has an awful contract and will be a financial hindrence for years. OKC would have to give up a 1st rounder just to get some team to accept his contract. PJ3 was the 28th pick in the draft. So basically what the trade boils down to is Varejao for the 28th pick and whatever pick Toronto ends up getting, which will likely be around 8-10. Plus OKC gets out of Perk's contract and gets a veteran sharpshooter who is expiring out of it.

Anyways, this isnt the trade thread so I hate to derail it too much, but I wanted to dispell the notion that the Cavs would be giving up a 1st in any Varejao deal.
