How much would you pay Josh Johnson (Contract)
Jays cant afford to let this guy walk as a FA next summer, but if they wait to sign him after he proves something, he could be out of the JAYS budget...... so its clear Jays need to lock him up before the season starts. I mean he was the main piece of the big trade and if he leaves it dosen't jutstify taking on so much salary for so many young high ceiling prospects.
so heres how it is..... Anibel Sanchez, a lesser pitcher is demanding nearly 100 million deal, and it looks like he might get it too. So im assuming the minnimum Johnson will accept is that much.
would you give him a 100+ million contract as security, or take a gamble?......... if so, how much would you offer him?

I think if we signed him right now we would get a good deal because of his injury history. I think 5/75 and he signs.

I'd give him an opt out clause after 2 years if we can get a discount on a 5 year deal.

considering injury risk, go HARD for first few years, then offer a little extra at the end:
3 for 57
4 for 68
5 for 75
you choose, J.
3 for 57
4 for 68
5 for 75

75 million over 5 years seems about right

His agent says he thinks he can be the highest paid pitcher in the history of the game, especially if he has a good year. We have to blow him away this offseason, as next offseason he will surely test FA.
I would give him 7 years 140M this offseason and hope he accepts.

Or what? Let him walk. He has a lot of leverage.

Rather let him walk than risk having another Wells. He's already injury prone.

I don't know because it's really hard to say what he is right now and what he will be going forward. If he bounces back in 2013 to what he was in 2009-2011, we're looking at potentially one of the best arms in the game and a huge salary to go with it. Of course, nobody would be that surprised if he got hurt either next season.
Despite the questions with him, I'd be tempted to lock up a talent like this if possible. It's not easy to find, develop, or acquire arms like his. If AJ Burnett is getting 5 years/82M (and that was three years ago), you'd have to think Johnson will ask for more than that (perhaps 6 years/100M+?) and I'd probably give it to him considering our situation/lack of elite pitching talent. This isn't Roy Halladay here, but unlike Roy, he's likely going to try to get a full market value contract.

100-115 million over 6 is fine by me, i don't think anything less than 100 million gets it done. I'd even add a 30 million dollar vesting option at the end if he makes 180 starts combined in the previous 6 years.

This. No way 5, 75 gets it done. He would get a much better contract going to FA.
I think something like 7 years, 105-110 mill.

5 years, $90M, and give him an opt-out clause after 2-3 years. You know the Jays don't want to have a long-term albatross on the hands (er, neck, I guess) and the opt-out should offset the shorter 5 year term. The possibility of cashing in on another long-term deal in 2015 if he can establish his health while making $40M in the mean-time would be pretty enticing for a guy that has injury concerns. Hard to say what kind of deal could be struck without knowing what the player wants though.

His agent went on a good rant about he doesn't wanna be that agent who turns down millions and watches his client get hurt. That's almost verbatim.
If we walked up to him right now and offered 5/75 I really don't know that they would reject it.

Re: How much would you pay Josh Johnson (Contract)
Josh Johnson will be 29 next year and then 30 when he becomes a free agent.
5/75, imo he will get even if he is injured most of the year. (ofcourse you can start with that)
I would think he has to be blown away really. I think 5/90 - 5/100 will be very hard for him to turn down.
i would personally look at doing a shorter with more money as albatross contracts come from length. and how you can tempt him is, he can still get a l.t contract at age 31 / 32.
I would really consider 2/50 / 3/67.5 extension. more than 5 / 100

Re: How much would you pay Josh Johnson (Contract)
If the contract is for 5 years, I see the range as $80-100 to lock him up. With his injury history I'd obviously much prefer $80, but we'll have to see if he and his agent see it the same way.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

We really need to look at this from his agent's point of view
Get 75 million over 5 years now for your client or have him risk an injury while pitching out his contract year in the AL East
Considering Johnson's age and medical history it seems like a no-brainer to get something signed

He said he wants biggest contract ever. I doubt he will get it, but 5/75 isn't exactly something he would take if a good year gets him 5/110 or something.
AL East is overrated. Yankees are getting weaker (and it's because of loss of FA's, not age), Baltimore had a lucky season, Red Sox's stink and Rays can't score.
AL West is the strongest division in the league right now. More runs scored on average, less runs against on average in 2012. Even Oakland scored 3 fewer runs than us and allowed way less. Texas scored more than the Yankees, and Angels scored more than 4 teams within the East division.

I heard that too, but IIRC, I thought the agent was referring to their FIRST contract. This would be JJ's second contract
