Re: Fox Sports: Marlins broke promises
The Marlins do not award no-trade clauses, but club officials, while recruiting Reyes and Buerhle as free agents last offseason, assured both players that they would not be moved, sources said.
Buehrle knew the Marlins’ history of dumping high-priced players, and it concerned him, according to a friend. Team president David Samson, however, told both Buehrle and his wife, Jamie, that the team was committed to a long-term vision, sources said.
A source close to Reyes, asked if the shortstop also received verbal assurances from the Marlins that he would not be traded, responded, “The answer is yes. A vehement yes.”

Any player that signs a contract with the Marlins without a no-trade clause would have to be living under a rock (or incredibly stupid) to think they won't get traded. It's the freakin' Marlins!

Verbal promises=boo hoo
Still, I can see some problems in the future if Toronto doesn't win. Collecting players who didn't want to come in the first place, regardless of their talent, is a tough risk to take. It all looks fantastic, and I am thrilled that we are all in...but you can just see guys like Buerle and Reyes wanting out on the next flight if it doesn't work out somehow due to injury or down seasons from some of our key guys or...something.
I do think it will...but there is potential here for a very mercenary attitude. Now, saying that, it's worked for the Yankees for a long time, so let's hope these guys can be pros and do their jobs without wanting out all the time.

It's too bad AA would probably have to eat a lot of Buerhle's contract if he wanted to move him. I just have a bad feeling Buerhle isn't going to want to be here when the dust is settled.

awwww womp womp. sleazy exec millionaire in a suit reneged on a promise. my crap is also different shades of brown.
i could give a flying bargnani about this. if these promises weren't broken then we don't have a team to be exited about next season.

Bautista outplays his contract by more than $70 million over the next four seasons (2013-2016).

Same exact thing happened to Delgado in 2006. Nobody should have been surprised about what the Marlins did, least of all the players involved. Get them to commit to a real no-trade clause if you don't want to be dealt next time.

Professional athletes are mercenaries. That's the way this works.

I hope Marlins stupidity doesn't end up costing us. We actually want them here, unlike the Marlins.
