Do we consider Kevin Pillar a prospect

Kevin had himself a heck of a season finishing the season in Dunedin after starting in Lansing. He was named the Midwestern League MVP and in aggregate put up .323/.374/.439 with 51 SB.

He just finished the Arizona Fall League hitting .371/.409/.435 with 8 SB.

He is 23 years old now, and it's hard for a guy starting as a 22 year old 32nd round pick to make the majors; however he's likely to start next season in AA playing CF for us now that Jake Marisnick is gone.

What are the odds of him making a MLB roster at some point?

I say he is closer than people give him credit for, but he has a low ceiling IMO. He is a 3rd/4th OF type. Starts on some teams, but not on all.

We will know after this year, AA is when baseball gets real.

Just show how deep the jays system is, even after the big trade.... these guys if they don't make the team will possibly used as trade bait in the future.

Especially in pitching... jays are loaded.

I like the Reed Johnson comp. A solid 4th of'er that doesn't do much particularly good nor particularly bad. Good teammate and bench guy that won't kill you if he has to fill in when injuries hit.

I never really read much about Pillar before because I don't have time to keep track of all the prospects but I did read that he set an NCAA Div II record by putting up a 54 game hit streak and he won the Application League batting title in 2011.

Like flackjacket said, AA ball is when the wheat is separated from the the chaff in the minors. If Pillar puts up those types of batting numbers in New Hampshire he could be a real prospect by mid season.

*edit* I read the Reed Johnson scouting report and I can get behind that. It makes sense that with his age & development he's a 3rd or 4th outfield type, especially since he can steal bases and play CF.

I've read that Pillar's more of a crafty base-runner than a speed merchant. I'm expecting his SB will level off once he reaches the majors, a la Reed. Reed has never swiped more than 8 bags in the majors while in the minors he posted 42 in AA.
