if it all fails... then what

Post#1 » by number15 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 8:21 pm

Jays are going for it all and Rogers is putting the money into it.

Here's the question... what if the Jays fail?

Does someone get fired?..... does Rogers get cheap and have a fire sale of talent?

I say this after seeing the championship favorite marlins fail..... and sell all they have.

Can the jays get equal value for the guys they just traded for?

Just assume jays win 72 games and finish last in the AL East........ just assume.... and comment

If they win only 72 games next year it'll be a disaster and probably the end of AA, honestly.

But I don't see it. If we miss the playoffs we're going to be right there at the end of the season and the entire management team will be back the following season getting more pieces to win. I mean if we win 90 games and miss the playoffs by 1 game, everyone comes back.

I think with the farm system we have and with ownership commitment to win like this we can be a contender every year. This isn't the Miami Marlins that have a tepid fanbase and owners. The city will be on fire next summer and I fully expect >3 million fans at the gates. This is a big market that has been waiting for a winner and people will be out in droves to see the winner.

AA had to take this chance at some point and the opportunity presented itself (both in terms of the deal and divisional makeup). We've still got some great pieces in the farm system. If it doesn't pay off in a couple of years we still have some great trade pieces to refresh the franchise and build around Lawrie, etc.

Am I the only one that thinks , this was our plan the whole time? People think AA and Rogers have to make a big move after our coach left and injuries but it seems to me AA was collecting assets to get to this point.

AA could have spent money last season but he didn't like the players that were available.

carbrera was traded last offseason, and buerhle and reyes were both free agents. they were all available

You realize two of the big pieces we picked WERE available last year, right?

I think it's more to do with timing. Waiting for the farm system to mature, and some of the young players to get more experience at the MLB level. The fact that things went miserably last season (at least in large part due to injuries) and the coach left, only added pressure for the organization to react in a big way. I still think the plan was to take the step forward this year.

What if I'm in the shower and I trip on a bar of soap? Why dont you cross that bridge when you come to it, do you really feel the need to discuss all the bad things that could happen? gtfo

I think there's just too much talent on this team for it to be a complete failure.

Also bear in mind the Jays have a massive fan base - nothing like the pathetic support found in Florida. The fans will be packing the Rogers Centre and and TV ratings will be through the roof. If for some reason things go south, they may try even harder for the following year, rather than blowing it all up.

They were available but Buerhle wouldn't sign with us and Reyes was signed for a 6 year deal which is against team policy.

We were building value with prospects and our major league roster last year. If Hutch , Drabek were not injured they could very well have been traded like our other prospects have been.

We had many years of spending with Gord Ash and Ricciardi that got us nowhere but a .500 record. It was time to step back for abit and build some assets then boost the payroll again.

I just get the sense that people think we are making these moves because Farrell left or Rogers finally gave the go ahead but I think the plan was to start making moves like they have this fall and winter all along.

If it fails next year I won't be questioning AA and Rogers they stepped up to the plate and
delivered there is so many variables in baseball you can't take anything for granted.

If the team flops next year there will be heat on the manager and the players that under performed
but we play in the toughest division in sports.

Then we're no worse off than we would have been if we didn't even try to begin with. But I'd assume Rogers would do the same thing they did with JP and cut off AA if the team doesn't win after a year or two. That's why the next few years are so important to give them incentive to keep spending.

Before this trade I would have called AA a genius, not winning wise but he had a masterplan or so it would seem.
Promise a multi-year rebuild and possibly get extended after his first contract expired even if we had sub-par seasons throughout the many years. If we won throughout that rebuild period then he would have definitely been a genius, but if not this would have gave him job security for all those years.

But now I don't know what to think and I obviously know he's trying to go for it this year (Whether Rogers pushed him to a "win now" mode or not) which changes my initial thought of him just working for job security. I think if all fails he'll be blamed, or use the manager a scapegoat.

last season hasn't even been over for a month... the roster isn't even finished. I don't know what else to say except, do you live under a bridge?

Well we have more assets now. Either these high paid guys get dealt or we get picks (assuming they fail). AA will be able to rebuild pretty easily I think.

The key is we have not stripped the farm system bare. There's a good chance Gose, Sierra, possibly even d'Arnaud will start the season in BUF. Two of the Lansing 3 remain. I can go through the Stroman's, BJ Davis, etc who remain, and in the end we will still have a farm system rated at least league average or better with most of its 2012 top guys intact.

Also, we will hopefully kindle the kind of interest that brings three million fans into the stadium and lets free agents know we're serious about winning, so that even if a few guys under perform, there is room to make moves.

Key to remember: Toronto is no longer eligible for revenue sharing, the Jays were going to be a contributor to revenue sharing no matter what. So there is no incentive to pull a Loria and go small payroll to make a lot of money as a parasite. That'shas to be at least one of the reasons AA has the green light to go for a $120m payroll.

If it fails, it will probably be due to injuries, in which case they'll probably give it another try the following year.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Not true considering Johnson will be a free agent and will be one of the biggest factors in whether we are good or not.

Well I hope they make the playoffs. I don't think injuries will be an excuse either. It would be so disappointing if they underachieve and the budget gets slashed.
