Lakers Interested in Josh Smith

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Sat Nov 17, 2012 6:21 pm

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/224541/Sources_Lakers_Have_Had_Internal_Discussions_On_Pursuing_Josh_Smith

It makes too much sense, now. We need to trade him. Before we lose him for nothing.

With Dwight Howard a Laker.

With D'Antoni a Laker. (MD's offensive system is perfect for an athletic wing like Josh to thrive in a Shawn Marion type role.)

We can't compete with the evil empire. Championships, resources, popularity, fan dedication. Whether it's Boston (with Rondo) or LA (with Dwight) we can not compete with what they offer.

It's time to trade him anyway...Josh is in his prime now. He's attempting more FGs than ever before now as a #1 option, and shooting a career worse FG% as a result. He'll never be a better player than he is today. Period. Eight years has been more than enough time.

Since the consensus here seems to be that we don't want Gasol (much to my dismay), we simply need to flip Pau for a more viable option. He'll be an expiring contract next year, so his contract is actually a pretty attractive one.

A few ideas:

Pau for Gortat and change, maybe?
Pau for Varejao?
Pau for Noah/Deng?
Pau for AL Jefferson?
Pau for Jason Thompson/Tyreke Evans (and John Salmons)
Pau for David Lee?
Pau for Kevin Love?
Pau for Calderon/Bargnani?
Pau for Bynum?

Let's be proactive, do it now from a position of strength and not desperation.

So what 3rd team and asset do you guys think we could flip Gasol into?

Pau for Varejao makes sense. He'd give Atlanta the mid-range guy and then the roll guy at C. He also has a reasonable contract that fits well into a larger strategy.

Looks to me as if you're already at the point of desperation.

Seriously, isn't LA the desperate one here? The ONLY way they can get Smith is if we trade him to them. THEY need to move Gasol to make their team work better with Howard. THEY need to add Howard's best friend. THEY need to make the PF position more athletic.

And they are the ones who have been "leaking" all the rumors about a Smith/Gasol trade - for months now.

Pau isn't gonna net you Deng/Noah, Bynum (he might be able to get Bynum but do we really wanna max Bynum out?), and Minnesota will block your number if you ask for Love. Now if Phoenix makes a push then I could see Pau getting us Gortat, Varejao, and maybe he could get us David Lee

We don't need to do anything. Pau's playing fine, we're looking to become better.

This is exactly what fans in Cleveland said....

Josh doesn't make us a contender. How many years are we gonna waste thinking he does?

I know CHI was desperate for Pau a couple of years back so they could have a dependable half-court option in the playoffs. I think they could be the trade partner that nets us the most.

Interesting article about that subject. The link is http://www.hoopsworld.com/josh-smith-on ... or-months/

I notice this quote:
It’s likewise true, sources said, that the Lakers have had internal discussions for months about pursuing (Josh) Smith, not only for his athletic gifts but also knowing that J-Smoove is one of free agent-to-be Dwight Howard’s closest friends in the game.

Seems to me you guys are not at all certain that you'll keep Howard.

If we can get those players for Pau, we'll just forget Josh Smith.

If CHI were willing to make Noah and Deng available for Gasol, I have to believe the deal would have already been finalized.
Calderon and Bargnani would be terrible. Good luck if you want them.
Bynum is either unhealthy or unwilling to re-sign with LA.

And if y'all could get Kevin Love, the NBA would need to conduct an investigation, 'cuz someone on the Timberwolves management team would be on the take.

Hawks don't want any of the Lakers' trash, and no way the Lakers have any talent that can net a high caliber player like Josh Smith. Lakers are in cap hell and are just delusional if they think that they can make any moves.

Lakers put themselves into this mess, and nobody is going to bail them out.

The Lakers HAVE to make this trade! The only way they can pull it off is through a three way deal. Here is a deal that will work beautifully for all parties:

Lakers get Josh Smith $13,200,000
Knicks get Pau Gasol $19,000,000
Hawks get Amar'e Stoudemire $19,948,799

If you thought the Dwight deal was spectacular, wait until Mitch pulls this one off.

wait what? If Ferry does this then he needs to be admitted into a mad house, Amar'e is the last player we would want, constantly injured and he has a contract which is even worse than Pau's. Do Lakers fans not understand that we don't want to compromise our cap

IMHO, they'll be a better fit than Josh.

The books may say we're in cap hell but when you have the TV deal we got and making crazy cash off of it.........you think the Lakers give a damn about the tax ?

Dr.Buss has always said that if titles are coming behind paying all that money, then he'll continue to pay it. See and that's the difference between owners who want to win and owners who just want to profit a bit. I think the Hawks owners fall into the latter of what I said.

Also the OP is on point, this is like what......the 3rd straight year a teams franchise guys is looking to bounce only to have his team not get much of nothing in trades ( Orlando, Denver ) or nothing at all ( Cleveland). When will these GM's learn that if your guy is in the last year of his deal, you might as well explore what you can get to save face. This denial stuff is going to be the death kneel for teams.

Wow...are all Laker fans this obnoxious?

I miss the days when only Hawks fans (yep, all 6 of us) visited the Hawks board.

Do I have the authority to lock this thread since I started it?

If not, HMFFL/UGA, will one of you guys do it upon request?

Seriously....

Dude it's an open forum, one of your mods even came to our board and posted in the same type of thread we have on this subject. What's the big deal about a few Laker fans posting in this thread ?

Then you call us obnoxious, nobody said anything that was out of line with the topic. But whatever this deal ain't happening anyway so I'm done with it.
