Does he have kids ?

They are banned for a reason. If he makes it a big deal ship him out. My god this athletes are spoiled.

I support Buerhle on this issue. If the city doesn't want to accommodate him, then he has every right to demand a trade. There is nothing spoiled about him not wanting to be separated from his dogs.

I would be extremely disappointed in this city if they didn't make accommodations for him.

Cause he's a pro athlete and deserves special treatment?

Lonely days ahead for Mark Buehrle

Pitcher's pit bull outlawed in Toronto, so family won't join him once season begins

A brief scouting report on Slater Buehrle:

He's 2 years old and weighs 65 pounds. His coat is slate blue, his ears are floppy and his eyes are a doleful shade of gray and green. He loves sleep and long walks, has a weakness for chasing four-wheelers, and is considerably less menacing than his reputation suggests. Belly rubs are his kryptonite.

Slater is an American Staffordshire terrier and bulldog mix -- a DNA-tested member of the pit bull family -- and controversy follows him around like a wagging tail. In the span of a year, he has been declared canine non grata in two countries encompassing both the National and American Leagues.

Slater made headlines last year when his owner, pitcher Mark Buehrle, signed a four-year, $58 million contract with the Miami Marlins. Because pit bulls are prohibited in Miami-Dade County, the family bought a house in nearby Broward County and Mark commuted roughly 30 minutes each way to the park.

I'm surprised they didn't choose the Buffalo route, so that Buerhle could go visit every so often (off-days, after the 1pm weekend games), if not daily.

I can somewhat understand not wanting to give away the dog to family for the entire season. I'm sure they'll leave him with family every couple weeks, so the family can come up to Toronto.

I know he's making millions of dollars, but I feel bad for any parent who has to be away from their children for long periods of time because of work. No amount of money can make up for that.

The flight time between St. Louis and Toronto is an hour and a half. The distance is really played up in that article, but the reality isn't too terrible at all for him.

The guy is making $58 million and only has to spend a few months a year here. He can have a pitbull farm for the rest of his life after this. Equating pitbulls/dogs to children is a bit much.

Edit - Thought you were calling his pitbulls his "children". Reread and now understand what you meant. Still, this guy could bring his family to Toronto if he wanted to, hell, even New York and not be away from them for that long. Seems like the decision to leave them there is more for the dogs...

I, for some reason, read Seattle instead of St. Louis, and thus was thinking of the long flight to the west coast instead of just the short trip to Missouri. So, you're right, it's not as big an issue as I thought.

I guess the benefit is it allows his kids who are at the beginning of their school career to not have to change schools in April, but the shorter trip should allow for regular visits to Toronto

I dont know why he didnt just live in Buffalo or Niagara. Jack Armstrong lives in Buffalo and he commutes in. As an American Im sure he's used to long commutes.

If I were him I would've had my family live in Buffalo/Niagara and grab a condo by the rogers centre for myself. Don't have to commute every day, but can head over to see the family whenever you want.

That's obviously without knowing all the other factors that likely played a role (willingness of the rest of the family to move, schools, etc.)

Well it isnt like St Louis is all that great either. Besides, athletes live in gated communities and are sequestered away from this kind of stuff.

In terms of weather it is. Most people would rather not deal with 8 feet of snow every winter.

I highly doubt he would stay in Toronto over the winter.
