The law wasn't due to dog fighting, it was due to the fact that the banned breeds accounted for about 1/4 of all dog attacks.

And yeah, people are going to care that you made a special allowance for a sports star.

The ridiculous sense of self-importance by die-hard sports fans never ceases to amaze me. Most people in this city couldn't care one way or the other about the jays.

And the law doesn't need to be reversed. The city could just assure Buerhle behind closed doors that the police won't enforce the law against him.

I'm sure they could also find a loophole in the law that will let him keep the dogs.

Sure there will be some idiots in the media who will try to sensationalize the story, but their voices will be drowned out by the cheers coming from the Rogers Centre.

The main reason the law is in place is because of the large # of the unprovoked pitbull attacks (much higher than any other breed) on innocent people, many of them children. These dogs are so unpredictable (and yes that includes well trained ones, pitbulls are notoriously unpredictable, a well trained pitbull is an oxymoron, training pitbulls just means trying to control his aggression as best you can).

If a person has the overwhelming need to own a pitbull, they then have confidence issues or a small penis, probably both. If they changed the law to make owners as criminally responsible for vicious and unprovoked attacks, in other words if the pit bull attacks or kills a person then the owner is jailed for aggravated assault or murder then you would see how fast they would get rid of thier dogs because even they know these dogs are inherently vicious and most of them are owned for intimidation and assert an owner's perceived manhood.

It's like the idiotic need for Americans to have the the right to own semi-automatic weapons. Why the hell would you need an assualt weapon? Just like why would you need to own a pitbull? If Buehrle is a big gun guy (and he probably is) then would you be OK with circumventing Canadian law and allowing him to own Uzi's and other assualt weapons in his home just so he could feel comfortable?

The law is dumb, but Pitbulls are irrefutably more dangerous than many other breeds. They can still be perfectly safe given a responsible owner though. Solution: Pitbull license.

Any new on a press conference for the players? Seems a little weird that it hasn't happened to this point

Missing from Tuesday's Blue Jays press conference to formally announce the 12-player trade with the Miami Marlins and the hiring of manager John Gibbons were any of the five players Toronto acquired in the deal.

No reason was given for their absence, nor was one really necessary, nevertheless there has been speculation some of the players might be less than thrilled with the idea of playing in Canada.

Following the trade, Johnson's agent gave a radio interview in which he suggested his client may be flipped in another trade before the season starts, possibly to Texas or New York.

On Tuesday, however, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos said Johnson is "excited" to be joining the team and he didn't rule out the possibility of extending Johnson's contract beyond the one year and $13 million remaining on his deal.
