Grade every Net player so far on a scale of 1-10

Post#1 » by therealbig3 » Tue Nov 27, 2012 9:05 am

The "rate Blatche" thread got me thinking about how I would rate every Nets player so far, so I figured a general consensus of each player so far would be cool at this point. My ratings:

Deron Williams: 7

He's dealing with a lot of injuries, and as a result, he can't buy an outside shot right now, and it's really hurt his efficiency. But even so, he's still a clear cut top 5 PG, and he's still brilliant as a floor general (he carried us tonight with his creation). He's cut his TOs down, and his defense has been very good so far.

Joe Johnson: 2

He's had a couple nice games, but overall, major disappointment so far. He's a good passer and defender, but his scoring has completely abandoned him at this point, and as a result, he's the main reason why "Brooklyn's Backcourt" isn't producing the way it should.

Gerald Wallace: 8

His offense has left much to be desired, and he's missed games, but his defense has been fantastic...like DPOY-good, no joke. Based on his energy and defense alone, the guy has been awesome, and he doesn't take shots away from anyone offensively. He's used as a spot-up three point shooter, which is dumb, but he's an excellent slasher who can feast in transition, who can handle the ball and pass reasonably well...and when his shot is actually falling from outside, like it did tonight, he's actually a pretty solid offensive player in addition to his elite defense

Kris Humphries: 1

He's been useless on both sides of the ball this year. He can't shoot, he clogs up the lane, can't catch, he goes into "hero-mode" too often, and he's clueless on defense way too much of the time. Not much more to say, he's flat out sucked this year imo.

Brook Lopez: 9

Still frustrated with his rebounding, because fundamentally, the guy is flawed: he's constantly caught not boxing out and giving up offensive rebounds. But man, has this guy been a clear positive on defense, and he's carried us offensively throughout the season. His passing has improved, his aggressiveness has improved, and he's really showing that he can be a player that you can run a successful offense through. And the Nets recent defensive success has largely hinged on his improvement. Really impressed with Lopez so far.

C.J. Watson: 3

Pretty disappointing so far. He's generally displayed some really bad shot selection, dumb TOs, and no real ability to create for others. The reason why Watson was supposed to be a huge pickup as our backup PG was because he would be able to keep the offense afloat while D-Will is on the bench, but he hasn't done that at all up to this point.

Keith Bogans: 7

Much better than I thought he would be. He's hitting the 3 ball and playing some really strong defense. Our rotation of Wallace, Bogans, JJ, and Childress might be the best perimeter defensive rotation in the league outside of Miami.

Jerry Stackhouse: 7

He's had moments of uber-fail, where I question why he's in the game, but he's also had moments like tonight where he semi-carries the team with a surprisingly good performance. I expected him to be a guy that only gets burn in practice and in blowouts, not in any meaningful game time. But he's proven to be a pretty solid rotation player even at this stage, and he's hit some big shots for us throughout the season so far.

Reggie Evans: 10

Couldn't ask for more from this guy. He's been flat out awesome defensively and on the glass, and he's even been solid from the FT line this year.

I'm not including Brooks or Blatche, because Brooks has barely played, and I've already discussed Blatche in the other thread.

Nice thread idea. These ratings are based on what my expectations of them were coming into the season and whether they are under/overperforming, etc.

D-Will: 6/10. Very disappointed but at the same time not surprised at his inefficiency from the field. I just had a bad feeling he would at least start off slow when we heard about the bone spurs. I know it's prone to happen with a guy who has the ball in his hands as much as Deron does, but usually at least once or twice a game (since he's been a Net), he makes a decision where I'm just thinking "What...why...why did he just do that? That was so stupid." I feel like he can return to his top-3 PG status, but I don't see it this year with his mobility hindered by injury. It's no secret we haven't seen "Utah Deron" since we got him, but we would clearly not be in nearly as good a position as we are without the countless good things he does for us. So 6/10 is actually very fair. I can't help but disagree that his top 5 PG status is still "clear-cut"; while I agree with you that he is still in that class. Rondo and even maybe Irving might have caught up to him, at least for now.

JoeJohn: 3/10. Not much to say other than he's had a slow start. Sure as heck ain't playing like the star that ATL gave a max contract (LOL...) to. As he gets more acquainted with Deron and his teammates, I expect him to have a big second half and I'm not concerned about him in the long run.

Gerald: 9/10. Sure, his reckless play scares me on a game-to-game basis and he lives up to his "Crash" nickname, no doubt. But I can't help but love the energy this guy plays with. He is absolutely a top-3 most valuable player on this team on sheer defense alone. Very rootable player and without him, we have no shot against the elite teams. Plain and simple.

For some reason the post won't let me see what I'm typing anymore which is annoying me, so I'll just quickly go down the line: Lopez 9/10, Evans 10/10 (he's become my favorite Net), Blatche 6/10, Bogans 7/10, Hump: 2/10, Watson 8/10.

DWill: B-. His all around game has been good, but shooting numbers are abysmal. He could be MUCH better come January.

JJ: D. Its been bad, but the rest of his game has been pretty strong.

GW: B. I've been surprised by how active he's been. His scoring has been underwhelming though.

KH: B

Bropez: A-. his defense has been a surprise. Offensively he's where I thought he would be. Has had a bit of trouble with stronger opponents and isn't hitting his long jumpers or FTs well.

------------
CJ B- 37% shooting, maybe lets see taylor out there
KB B+
RE B+
Stack A++++
MArshjon INCOMPLETE

mirza FAIL

Conclusion: we could be MUCH better

Deron: 6- His shooting so far this season has hurt us so far. Of the games I've seen I think I liked him most in the 2nd quarter of the Lakers game. He was attacking the basket really well. I think that this (his shooting) is a product of the little nicks he seems to keep on picking up as well as Avery's propensity to play him off the ball. On the ball he's done really well distributing and attacking the basket. His defense has been good at times and lax at others. His rating can easily be higher.

Johnson: 2- Has added very little to the team so far and had only had a couple of good games. Avery seems to like giving him ISO sets, which is what I was afraid of when we traded for him. He's been an absolute failure as an ISO player so far, but what hurts even more is that he hasn't even been good as a spot up shooter. He's been missing so many good looks that its not even funny anymore. I'd like to see Avery move him around a bit more on offensive sets, but I think that's too much to ask for from Avery.

Wallace: 7- There's no question what he's in the line up to do. Play defense. He's been great with his on the ball defense and even gives us good weak side protection at times. Would like to see some more out of him on offense and really again his lack of offense is a by product of Avery's ISO heavy offense. When ever he's cutting to the basket he's been a great finisher, but to this point he's been used mostly as a spot up shooter... seriously disappointing to see that.

Humphries: 3- Hasn't had quite the same impact on the boards as he had last year. His propensity to stop the ball on offense also bothers me (you could say the same for JJ and Brook though). He's be great in the PnR, but Avery seems to be blind to the PnR game. Defense has been pretty bad as well. Does very little to help Lopez inside the paint in terms of weak side protection. Avery should consider starting Evans at this point.

Lopez: 7- Easily our best scorer right now. Like 1 + 1=2 easy. With JJ struggling and Deron's shot being off Lopez is the one starter who has consistently scored so far this season. His biggest problem on offense is that he takes too long to get moving towards the basket and doesn't pass out of the post often enough to help speed up the offense. Again you can put some blame on Avery's ISO heavy offense, but it would be nice to see him do some more passing. Avery also needs to get him moving towards the basket (again PnR would be nice). Perimeter shot has been there. He's been more aggressive as well, although that disappears at times (like last night against the Knicks for most of the game until the end). Weakside defense has been good, but can improve a bit on his on ball D and rotations (most players on this team can do so).
-------------------------------------------------------
Watson: 5- On of our better offensive players off the bench. He hasn't shot quite as well as I thought he would, but he's doing some heavy lifting for a bench devoid of scoring options.

Evans: 8- Best bench player we have. Should really be starting, but his nose for tough boards and tough D is unmatched by anyone else on this team. Doesn't add much to our offense aside from grabbing offensive boards, but he knows his role and rarely makes dumb mistakes on offense.

Blatche: 5- Has had his moments this season, good and bad. Another scoring option off the bench, he's played alright D. Makes too many mental mistakes for my liking though as a product of his "hero-mode" play. In conclusion he's good in limited doses, although Avery has taken his liberties when playing him for the most part.

Bogans: 4- Plays good on the ball D. Needs less touches on offense.

Stackhouse: 5-He's played surprisingly well, although his age shows at times. But he's been hitting the shots that JJ can't seem to get a sniff at, so that's a positive on my book. Definitely shouldn't be playing as many minutes as he is though. Keep the old man fresh Avery.

Where art thou? (haven't seen enough of): Brooks (stuck in Avery's doghouse), Mirza (sitting pretty on the bench), Childress (good D when he plays, awful looking shot), Shengelia (still remember that Toko slam against the Magic), Taylor (part of the garbage[time]men).

You know I was going to use some .5 numbers and then I said if they're not good enough to be the higher number I'm going with the lower one...but 4.3 for JJ that is definitely precise...how did you come up with that?
