somebody on the general board talking about the hornets are about to announce a rebranding to "pelicans".

#grain of salt

why does that name sound like one a minor league hockey team would have? If somebody told me that the Norfolk Pelicans was an actual hockey team, I'd believe him.

I thought it was a joke when I read it. New Orleans Pelicans just sounds funny to me.

Pelican is the state bird.

I predict the Bobcats and Hornets are going to combine names.
The team will keep the 2nd, 6th, & 7th letters of Bobcats and combine it with the 1st , 3rd, 4th, and 5th letter of Hornets.

I could care less what they called New Orleans. I'm just glad there is some news or rumors regarding this. I was hoping Benson had some name already in mind when he took over the team.

According to Hornets report, Gale Benson in an interview on the Hornets pregame show said that New Orleans will change its name and colors effective NEXT SEASON, with the colors being bright red, navy blue and gold (colors of New Orleans' flag...they have a flag) and haven't divulged the name yet, but rumored to be Cardinals.

With Adam Silver saying a transition to the Charlotte Hornets would be quick since the NBA owns the rights, the Hornets backers are licking their chops. Personally, even though I love the Bobcats and our brand, I think we should switch back. Those 90's Hornets moments were magical and we should welcome them and the records and Phil's jersey back.

Cardinal, also the state bird of NC ... what the world

they should be considering "Cajuns", "Rebels", or something along the lines of being remotely relating to the city or state

Bensons are Catholic and "Cardinals" is a nod to their faith.

Still not sure it will be Cardinals, I think it will be something more daring.

Saw a post on Hornets report.com where those were the colors of the old N.O. pelicans baseball team as well.

Looks like the NBA is trying to play fireman and extinguish out the wildfire before it spreads out. This was just released almost an hour after Benson made the comment. Good to hear something though. It's been awhile since we heard any news from this.

Fats- It's the only topic NBA related the consistently loads the lines. Everytime the talk about the Hornets name coming home it dominates the entire show. Shows the passion for the Hornets bran here in Charlotte.

article from Bonnell in today's C.O.

Yes, a return to the Hornets name is a no-brainer, and I suspect this will progress once the Benson's gain all the appropriate approvals from the NBA. Reading between the lines I suspect this process is well underway between New Orleans and the league, but the owner's wife's comments were a little too much info for Stern's liking. The league wants to orchestrate everything relative to timing, brand-name merchandise sales and PR, so no announcement is likely during the season.

My hope is that we are also having these discussions concurrent with those of New Orleans, so all name changes could occur immediately after the end of this season.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Unfortunately Stern said in that article that a name change is a two year process.

That waiting period can be waived
