I think it's less about offensive sets and more about defining roles.
Probably.
But how many times we have an offensive stagnation in a possession and you see a guy like Chuck Hayes surveying the floor and sees everyone just standing/not moving, and he takes it to the rim and puts up a desperate shot?
Far too many times.
I guarantee you that you never saw that from Hayes in Houston (with the Rockets) where they have a legitimate offensive system. This goes back to coach Smart for the utter lack of an offensive system & the make up of this team (Petrie builds a roster that does not fit together). You simply do not see a smart-savvy veteran like Hayes throw up a desperate shot with any other team that has an offensive system installed, this is entirely on Smart on this particular issue.
Sure, it can be the player's fault on not recognizing the situation more better/quickly too. "Why dump the ball to Hayes late in the shot clock and hope he can do something with it?" At the very least, a guard could take the ball away from him and put up a shot that has a better possibility to go in.
Smart, and to a lesser extent, the players, is in fault of the horrid display on the court this season and their record shows that.
