Escobar heading back to AL East with Rays

Post#1 » by dagger » Wed Dec 5, 2012 4:00 am

With Tampa for a 23 year old minor leaguer. Yunel told a Miami Spanish-language paper he's happy to move on because MIA is set at SS with his buddy Hech.

i think i'd have offered up a borderline top-10 (closer to 15-20 range in our system) prospect to retain yunel's services for another couple years too, plug him in at a 2nd. i thought he'd be worth a little more honestly...who knows if dietrich will be anywhere near as good as escobar, let alone make it to the league. andrew friedman is a man who knows what he's doing.

Rays get a cheap short-stop for up to three years on a buy low deal. Hopefully the Escobar of 2012 is what we see from now on.....

Makes sense. I mean, I wondered why the Marlins wanted both Yunel and Hech.

Would have traded for Yunel back in a second at that price. He's going to be a huge bargain for the Rays, especially if he starts hitting again. Damn them and their incredible ability to be value whores.

He was atrocious offensively. That obviously hurts his value. I'm not surprise Tampa is the team to try to buy-low on him.

Career .282/.353/.390 line. And he doesn't even need to come close to that to be worth it for the Rays.

I can envision Escobar hitting .285 and Reyes hitting .282 at some point of the season and people complaining that we should've just kept Escobar. Or maybe I just spend too much time on the negative Raptors board.

Obviously I know his career averages are better, but those same numbers show a pretty inconsistent player who seems to be trending worse, not better. There's a good chance he'll be an upgrade for them at SS, but that says more about who they were trotting out there last year than Escobar.

I can't believe he netted so little back for Miami...it makes no sense that he was basically the biggest name in the trade that sent away Reyes/JJ/Buehrle/Boni and all they get is the guy Fangraphs considered to be TB's 15th best prospect?

It sucks to see another AL East team make a good team.

Yup, I noticed S e n s a i posted about this around 10:30 over in the MLB Off-Season Transactions Thread. This is definitely an upgrade for TB, not to mention at a relatively cheap cost.

If this was his price, why didn't we just throw in a prospect instead of Escobar? We could of used him at 2nd.

It almost seems like we wanted to part ways with him? Or this wasn't an option at the time?

Those #'s don't show an inconsistent player, and I don't see anything to suggest he's trending worse. Those #'s just show very good production from a SS.

I'm not sure what sign there is to project a "trend" here. He had a down-ish year. It's baseball. Players have good years and bad year. The previous season he had a very good year. Part of the reason for the difference in the 2 years is a .043% drop in BABIP. For it to be a trend you'd need to see multiple years where he's shown some steady declines in peripherals, which he hasn't.

A garbage prospect is all they got in return? Why the hell did they even want him from us?

I wouldn't be surprised if AA/Rogers insisted that he be included in the trade. That eye black incident made it impossible for him to play another season in this city.
