Carreno wasnt claimed and has been sent to AAA. Happy he didnt get claimed, gives us some more depth.

this rotation scares me. if johnson and morrow can stay healthy, we'll be in good shape. if romero can return to form, we'll be in great shape.

those are huge "ifs". romero remains my biggest concern. control issues don't get resolved by surgeries. they're completely psychological, and i can see romero never fully recovering. i hope i'm wrong...

happ as a fifth starter is okay, i guess. i think i'm like everyone else here in that i'd love for the jays to go even deeper into the coffers and sign another front of the rotation pitcher, but that's not likely to happen. so, pray for good health and a return to form for ricky. if that happens, we'll be in range of a playoff birth...at least in terms of pitching, we should be in a good place.

If the Jays pickup Marcum or Jackson as the fifth starter it would help a lot for depth.

I think Edwin Jackson makes the most sense IF he is looking for another short term deal with the aim of cashing in next off season or the one to follow. Mind you, going to an AL East team may not be the best choice for a pitcher looking to post good numbers to increase their value.

what about going after: Jair Jurrjens, he had a horrible 2012, but fits under AA bargin free agent starter, depth...

Last year he finished of with: 6.89 ERA, but in 2011 he was 13-6, 2.96. Sort of like a Romero reclamation project.

Carreno got hit in the face on the weekend with a line drive and rushed to the hospital. It looked pretty bad. I hope he's alright.

Agreed, don't mind taking a chance on him if cheap. If Happ out-performs him as #5 so be it, he'd be great in terms of depth

This type of guy is right, but IMO the Jays won't win for Jurrjens specifically. A guy in his position (youngish, plagued by injury, but still with upside) is drawn to teams like COL, CLE, or MIN this offseason. Teams with so many SP holes that he will be given every opportunity to rebuild some value. Guys like that don't sign where they'll be in a dogfight to be an above average starter just to win the 5th spot in a rotation or wait for injuries.

The Jays are more likely to get a mid-to-late 30's type willing to start in AAA who knows he's going to get a shot and wants that shot with a good team for a change. I'm thinking more Randy Wolf than Jair Jurrjens, but I do think there's at least one guy in the Jays future with something of a pro history to him.

JMO obviously.

Only problem with Jurrjens is his velocity is down. I think he is around 89-90.

Vance Worley anyone? Comes with 4 years of team control pushes JA for the 5th starters spot and provides pretty decent Romero implosion insurance as well. Probably costs a top 10 prospect but the farm system is still so deep that the loss can be absorbed especially with a high pick this year. Saves the major league trade chips as well should they be needed mid season to acquire someone.

I'm worried about Worley's arm. His fastball velocity has steadily declined ever since he was called up to the majors, starting out in the low-mid 90s and now sitting at about 89. His ERA has followed a similar pattern. He can probably give about a 4ish ERA but I don't know that I'd give up a whole lot to get him.

I'd be alright with somebody like Jeff Karstens. He was non-tendered so he should come pretty cheap. Low risk, medium reward.

happs fine, he has a strong durable frame, hes a hard thrower and the jays clearly believe they can unlock his potential and get more out of him.

We have good depth with our big 4, enough to justify rolling the dice on happ....which really isnt much of a gamble, he pitched well enough in two extreme hitters park (philly and houston), worst case we get about 170 innings with an era just over 5.

All we need is some minor league depth and a decent long man that can fill in.

marcum, jackson, lohse, liriano etc are not worth the investment.

Agreed. No need to spend 4-5 million on a guy who would be a fifth starter when we have a perfectly capable one. Like SharoneWright said, just add some more depth.

If you can get a guy better than Happ, which wouldn't be hard - they should do it! Why stand pat with him after spending all that money? Happ would be a perfect swing man.

Well for one, it's not just as easy as you might think... Happ cost us both Musgrove and Woj last year (ranked our 10th and 11th best prospects at the time of the trade). Legit major league starters don't grow on trees and come at a cost - FA money or value back in a trade. All things considered, if AA is going to give up as much as he did, he'd better stay committed to the trade until Happ proves himself wholly inadequate.

Happ is capable. Sure another great starter would be solid, but his splits with Toronto were great last year.

I wouldn't rule him out as being included in a package with a JPA/d'Arnaud or Gose/Rasmus for a better SP though.

I'm willing to bet he gets traded before opening day. He did nothing but increase value since coming over.
