I have a friend who actually applies for some of these job openings. The cover letters are pretty hilarious, he usually cites his Madden record, high school football career, etc. I should try to find one of the letters, he usually posts them on facebook.

Not sure if serious.

Simple math.

Petersen >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bielema

I am a Bielema hater. But I think Petersen is being overestimated here. Haskins is the one who built that program from scratch and made it what it is. And he got a decent gig at Colorado and set back their program 20 years. There are no guarantees with going from a small school that plays one game a year against solid competition. And he is leaving his recruiting grounds. Its a risk to him so he is going to want to be compensated for it. So that means we would be paying him what, 4.5MM? That type of money is reserved for the guys like Saban and Miles who live in the top 5.

I guess you could also argue Dirk Koetter got Boise State going as well, but yeah, I mentioned Hawkins. Who knows really with those guys.

Barry was only an assistant before getting the UW job, so was Bielema. Chryst had never been a head coach before Pitt hired him. Chip Kelly had never been a head coach before getting the Oregon job. MSU was the first head coaching job for Saban and Les Miles was a career assistant before Oklahoma St hired him.

All that matters is if Alvarez hires the right guy, regardless if the guy has already been a head coach or not.

This is not a rebuilding situation, this is not a learning curve, you have talent and MUST try and keep a very talented incoming class. No fan will tolerate a learning curve, could set this program back, this is win now. Most of all, Barry himself has made it well known he wants an existing head coach first.

Apparently we were the front-runner to land Alex Collins. Now that Bielema is gone, we are out of the race.

I have to be honest, I was kind of hoping the Gophers might have a shot with UW commit Keelon Brookins (MN kid who originally committed to the Gophers), but then I heard he tore his ACL for the second time. That's sort of a buzz kill and I doubt any school would even try to steal a commit under those circumstances. The kid was a pretty highly touted DB too.

Yeah, their broke and don't have very good facilities. Not to mention they've been pretty horrible for a while now.

I hope this doesn't drag out too long. It would be nice to have a name announced by next week.

By the way, I think it would be odd for an offensive player, especially an lineman or running back, to decommit from Wisconsin due to Bielema's departure. His involvement in the offense was minimal at best, and despite the developments in our passing game, we've been a ground-and-pound program - a lineman and running back heaven - for decades now.

Not that I don't get the role of personalities during the recruiting process, or discount an athlete's factors in making a decision, but it seems a bit odd.

That link to the job posting mentioned somewhere in the 24th of December range for the hiring. Obviously it will go as long as they need it to go to find a good candidate but it's an idea of the timeframe we're looking at.

Obviously, could just have been a random date because that whole thing was quickly written up because it had to be.

It's the latter. Barry did the rounds on every national radio show and in each he mentioned that he had a short list of guys he thought were ideal for the job and those would be the ones he would reach out to.

Online app is a hilarious formality.

Yeah, they only posted it because they're legally required to. But, I should turn in an app anyway.

Human Resources requires all jobs to be posted for 14 days before filling.

After Alvarez hired BB without letting anyone know, the board will get their pound of flesh this time.
Please reconsider your animal consumption.

Who said it was a rebuilding situation?

My point should have been obvious, that plenty of assistant coaches in college football history got their first head coaching job at a BCS school and did well to very well. Besides that, plenty of head coaches who had success at one school, usually a smaller level school and then when given a higher profile job, they failed pretty badly. The same thing happens pretty often in college basketball, just look at Marquette history for example over the last say 20 years.

You love Chryst so much and if Bielema had left last year instead, Alvarez hiring Chryst would have meant handing the job to someone with no head coaching experience. In the end when it comes to hiring a new head coach by an AD like Alvarez, it's going to come down to gut feel by him after researching and interviewing candidates. I'm totally fine with Barry picking an assistant or head coach from another team. Then we'll find out if he was right.

Hell, Ted Thompson hired a head coach who not only had zero head coaching experience, McCarthy was coming off a season where he was the coordinator of the 30th ranked offense.

Did anyone catch his interview on Mike and Mike this morning? I missed it but one of my friends posted the following on it...

Beliema's interview on Mike & Mike this morning 1) opened my eyes to a lot of things, and 2) made me sick... you're still a **** coach and your assistants that kept leaving you for more money made you look like the great coach you are, I lose respect for you throwing Wisconsin under the bus. I'm going to laugh 4-5 years from now when Arkansas is still getting stomped by Alabama 52-0.

Sounds like he took some shots at UW when he really didn't need to.

Unrelated development: Apparently Bo Pelini has reached out to Tennessee about becoming their next head coach. I wonder if Barry would like to secure a coach before Nebraska is forced to start looking for a new head coach, one less program to compete with.

Edit: Never mind, I guess Tennessee is going to hire Butch Jones.
